Froggy's Colony Ship
« on: October 14, 2009, 03:50:54 AM »
Statement of intent:  I will build a fairly large (over 8") space ark of some sort.  I intend to use leftover bases, microwave, and VCR parts, and at least at the moment I intend to make it fit the motif of the UNSC fleet for Full Thrust I just basecoated.

I am however out of superglue at the moment, so this will have to wait till the start of the new household budget cycle so I can get a new 2oz bottle.
You, sir, are not allowed to attempt a takeover of the solar system until your octopus sobers up.

Ok, after a week or so of life trying to eat my brain, the project is started.  I've used two soda bottle caps, 8 plastic bases, an old spool, and a plastic bubble from a vending machine.  This is the basic hull, and I shall be adding greeblies soon.

Aaright, here she is primed.  I'm at this point taking suggestions for colors and who these guys actually are.

The only authorised colours for colony ships are grey, grey and white, grey and beige, grey and blue (toned down), or grey and green (toned down).
If the vessel has been taken over by something aggressive and is used openly by them: grey and red.
If said vessel has been taken over by something aggressive and is used secretly by them; or if they are concealed on board: basic colours (i.e. grey), not to give the game away.
If said vessel has been taken over by something aggressive and is used secretly by them for something ominous, notably its transformation into a super weapon: charcoal grey and black.

If you are adventurous you can try:
grey and pastel pink.
grey and rusty brown with touches of crimson.
grey, sand and grey.
grey, grey and very pale olive.
grey, grey, grey and grey.
grey, grey, grey, charcoal grey, minced grey and orange.
grey with grey drybrush and shading, grey wash.
fuchsia and magenta.

And it's inhabited by Greater Froggies :)

oh - and very nice work too  8) 8) 8)

I'd say that grey and red (toned down) would be perfectly acceptable even without the menacing presence of aliens.

Nice work! Don't know about a color scheme or wheathering, though. I'd do only highlights and shadows (in grey), and use a few decals, numbers and such. Maybe very small dark sprinkles around the nose to represent squashed flies. What scale was this in?

I didn't build to any particular scale, but I want her to look quite big.  I've found I can do this with lots of little detail, either in the model itself or in the painting.  Unfortunately, the model has a lot of wide-open space, particularly in the front.

The model itself is roughly 180mm in total length, or roughly 7".

Here she is with the base color laid down and drybrushed up.  Next are all the exciting little details that make it seem so huge.

I'm about 50% done with the patterning.  The little yellow lights on the prow are going to be painted on most of the rest of the patterned blue section.  I'm still not quite sure what to do with the red yet, but at least I have the color wheel completed now.

Looking good. I do like the 'Azteching' technique on spaceships.
So many projects..... so little time.......
