As a teenager I loved pouring over books by Lovecraft, and of course the sourcebooks by CoC. I made an Insmouth table in 28mm, but sold my buildings when I switched to 15mm. Just in time for Halloween, I thought I would try my hand at some 15mm buildings. In truth, these buildings might double in my Bladerunner games as well (with the proper roof fittings). Both are scratchbuilt using brick sheets and some HO walls I picked up at a flea market. I added some posters and broken windows too.

Great stuff
-
The houses are creepier than the Unholy Beings - which is just as it is at its best in HPL. Suggest the horrors, and let half-conscious paranoia free.
-
Some really nice stuff you have there.
-
They look great.
I really like your work.
-
Great job.
Do you have more or are you planning on doing more?
I'm pretty certain I stayed in the Gillman House when I was overseas somewhere, can't remember where...
-
I hope to. I am awaiting supplies! My goal is to build a much smaller version of my old 28mm table. I would like a Marsh refinery, National Grocery, and some ugly harbour type ruins.
I hope your stay at the Gilman house was pleasant. We aim to please Cthulhu!
-
This is excellent (as I've said before), love what you are doing!
What colours are you using to get that dark red brick?
-
Just craft paints from ART DECO. It's actually called Brick Red lol I actually tried to make it orangier like your factory Ockman, but it failed miserably. I went back to my old method. Prime black. drybrush red brick, drybrush red, add a little yellow and white. More drybrush. I then hit it with some black and brown ink washes. Mostly furniture stain.
Here in Winnipeg, the older buildings downtown from the 1890's have a much darker red color. It seems like the lighter more yellowy bricks came later.

Thanks for sharing your recipe!
I undercoat black, basecoat crimson red, wash with dark tone or strong tone, drybrush crimson red, adding heavy goldbrown to the mix in a couple layers.
Really loved your 28mm board, looking forward to this iteration!
-
I miss it too. The plastic like and K-line buildings will probably now be impossible to find. I had so much fun making it though. I really enjoyed the creativity.
Interesting how I inkwash last, and you inkwash second. I’ll have to try that!
-
Sometimes I add small patches of ink/wash at the final step, to create variation or break up patterns, but washing it all gives it a sheen I'm not entirely fond of...
-
That Gilman House is excellent. Very evocative, especially with that light glowing. Brrrrr.... Creepy. Great craftwork :-*
-
Argh!
This thread has made me look for brick buildings/H0 walls, I want to build my own Gilman House!
-
Here are some more additions to the harbor section of the city. I am still waiting on parts for my Marsh Refinery and the National Grocery. Sorry for the lousy pictures. I have to take them at night.

Brilliant stuff
-
Utterly, utterly amazing! :-* :-* :-*
-
This is one very atmospheric table. Others have commented already on the gloomy buildings which make up a major part in every good lovecraft story.
What is really amazing is how well you managed to get the dreary Trostlosigkeit of an industrial environment without going into postapoc. Chapeaux!
I grew up in the Ruhr area, Germany‘s industrial heart - long after it had reached its peak, and it is the small places, like a run down harbor, which for me were always the places that had true Lovecraftian horror.

That's some really good looking shots!
Is it 30x30cm board or larger?
-
Wow, some excellent vignettes here!
-
Something like that. It's probably too small as I can't even get half my buildings on it.
-
Excellent
-
I was unhappy with the scale of my old Church of Dagon. I spruced it up:

A great looking model. Very well done!
-
Looks great. Are those matchbox cars re-purposed that I see as well? I am always a little concerned if they scale well with 15mm but the ones you have there seem great.
-
That looks brilliant :-*

Keep up the good work!

Matchbox cars are not produ ed in a single scale, but just so big that they fit into a blister. I’ve been using them for years now, and some are small enough to be perfectly scaled for 15/18m, while others are big enough to be more on the 20mm side.
-
I noticed that as well. There are some beautiful cargo trucks in 1/48 scale that almost fit the part. They tower over 15mm miniatures though, and I had to give them away :(. I'm going with 1/64th scale.

I would go to HO scale vehicles they're 1/87 scale and will be much closer to scale for 15's, just check them out at your nearest railroad hobby store, just carry one of your figures to see.
Just an idea;

I think there are several AARs in the graduate studies section at Miskatonic University. Another, translated into Latin in the 9th century, is reputedly in the Vatican library of really seriously forbidden books. One may be stored behind the Ark of the Covenant in Arizona. Two have been spotted in the Amazon jungle since they escaped from the hold of the Intrepid and killed the crew and a shoggoth....

Well the buildings are finished. Actually I ran out of supplies to be honest. I finished the underboard last night. I found a nice large frame to keep it all together. I'll post some pictures later.
I am going to use a new solo set of rules called Perilous Tales by Gasland Games. I want some investigation as well so I will probably use some of my Bladerunner stuff as well. Strange Aeons is also a possibility, but with no solo rules or cards I'll probably pass on it.
Thanks for all the kind words. I probably would have stalled out much earlier!
-
I finally finished the board! I ended up using a left over picture frame as the base. I also had some fun taking photos :P

It's lovely when it's all put together! :-* :-* :-*

The buildings aren’t attached to the cobblestone bases, right? Genius. I love modularity.
Dan
-
Fabulous! I also have the Marshmallow Man, but where did you get the Ghostbusters car?
-
It’s just a matchbox set that came with cars from the first and second movie. I bought them at a flea market for a fiver. There are a lot on eBay.

OldBen1
Any plans for additional buildings and figures?
Dan

I just finished a large building. I will post soon.

Amazing terrain!
Even more impressive given the scale :-*
I’ve subscribed ;)

I better get in gear and post some photos!

I had a chance to buy a design preservation model that was on sale at a local trainshop. It was harder to weather, but I think it turned out really well. Definitely bigger than my other buildings!

Thanks!

This is one of my favorite threads here! :o
I love the whole idea of gaming Lovecraft in 15mm. It allows you to include impressive architecture!
I‘m currently resurrcting my own 15mm projects and am happy that I can now get nearly every model I want thanks to 3d printing!

I agree. I wish I had started with 15mm and stayed with it and nothing else. Perhaps that’s why I’m trying hard to make up for lost years. :)

We all make those mistakes, Dan. Recent years had me switching back to 28-32mm, too.
But this thread shows one thing I will never ever achieve with my monetary, spatial and time limits: create believable small worlds!

By all means do. And please post lots of photos too!

That’s awesome. I love the ‘play set’ feel of your small playing surfaces - really speaks to the inner, obsessive miniaturist in me. I’m going to try and use your approach to play Judge Dredd solo in 15mm - just need to make the figures! lol
Keep up the good work, seeing progress like yours helps to keep me inspired when I’m making no headway of my own.

That looks great.

Devilishly good looking!

And another one of those threads that I had somehow completely missed until today ???
Excellent work. Not enough to get me to move to 15mm, but defintely enough to almost make me regret never getting into that scale lol
-
Amazing Stuff as always. Love the depressing feeling of the muted colors.
Who makes the Indy?
-
I'd missed this thread up until now. Reading through it: wow, some great stuff there. I love how evocative your stuff is, and there is something special about the fact that it is all in 15mm.

Fantastic work on these! The Devil's Reef set-up is a brilliant idea for a small game board, and it's tremendously well executed.

Fantastic work.

Amazing stuff, Michael!

The reef and the new building all look great! Do you have plans to expand the reef and add more water tile to go around it for use of steamer boat or other small watercrafts.
-
I'm not sure about adding water tiles. I'm not great at painting water!
Finally finished the smoke stacks for the refinery.
