Daylight bulbs or alternatives?
« on: January 29, 2010, 08:51:55 AM »
Until now I've painted under two cheap desk lamps with a 60w daylight bulb in each one. One has blown and I've realised that as our world is gradually dimmed by the switch to energy bulbs the bulbs I use will be harder to find and more expensive.

I could do with some advice on alternative lighting options. I dont have my own workbench at the moment so I set up my painting area on our dining table when I want to paint/build and generally escape from reality. With that in mind I'm looking for something that can be set up and taken down quite easliy.

Thanks.

Matakishi sings their praises also. I have been using them for about 3 years and it was probably the single best decision I ever made with regard painting. Great for taking pics too.

Chiefy,

I've got one of these: http://uk.daylightcompany.com/home/product/?id=96

All I can tell you is it's very expensive but utterly bloody fantastic.
You can clip it onto a table edge or window sill in a few moments. It is, verily, the dog's b*llocks. All the clear, bright, pure, cool daylight you'll ever need for painting or taking photos of your little treasures.

But it does come at a rather hefty price...

Feels to me, like a birthday present from someone who loves you very much...  ;)

Try Hobbycraft - Webbs Garden Centre, Droitwich they have the new style daylight bulbs, but they are expensive, about £7.00 to £9.00 each.  The new bulbs are supposed to last ten times longer than the old ones.

I picked up an old style bulb (the last they had) at an art shop in Tewkesbury.

Good luck in your search,  If you find a source, keep us informed, I'll pick up a couple as reserve.

I am with CB, mata et all here.

TC, you may also want to consider that paying the higher prices for a low energy bulb is warranted since they last so very much longer than its traditional kind. But you are an enlightened man, so you probably already thought about this.

Should I also get my coat now?

I use a 20W halogen bulb in a cheap tescos desk lamp or a 60W in another cheap anglepoise - they're about the same light level - plus I've got 100W in the ceiling of the "toy room".

I also laid in a good stock of them all before the ecomentalists banned them as I found the eco-bulbs weren't good enough.

As a lot of my gaming is done under artificial light I paint the figures under that light too, although I have tried daylight bulbs in the past.

Thanks chaps. I'll see what I can justify financially and make a purchase.

I have personally found the increased cost of a daylight lamp justified. I have only changed the bulb in mine once in 5+ years and that was because my toddler son knocked it over (mine is a floor lamp).

Cheap and very, very effective, best painting decision I've made other than Rosemary's brushes :)
