Personally, I believe you are doing a great job. I am not sure about the spears, though. I mean there is not much bamboo either in North Africa nor Spain! lol
Jokes aside, it looks great. I want to do something similar but for a later period, late 12th to early 13th Century, with Almohads instead Almoravids. I have been toying with the idea of using the plastic set of the Perrys for the Sudan to represent the Black Guard of the Almohad sultan, which at Las Navas was formed, apparently, by black slave-soldiers. Just thinking about it at the present, though. Too many projects at the same time!
They look great, seriously. It's cool to see that sense of uniformity that crept in to Andalusia with the coming of the North Africans. This unit looks really sharp, and I'm looking forward to seeing it come together.
Interesting discussion on the shields. I agree that the light brown shields really work well with the color scheme of the clothing. It would be great to see a couple of the grayish-greenish-blue realistic shields in the mix too, just to highlight the effectiveness of the lighter brown. Also, is there any chance that these shields we painted? If so, then you can justofy any color you want :D

I think those represent cane rather than bamboo. The former is very common in the region, it is flexible, and have been traditionally used for centuries. I guess it has been a misunderstanding in my part and when I read "bamboo" I thought on the South-East Asia plant, and not as a generic term! My bad...
By the way, I also intend to use the new Andy Hobday's and Paul Hicks' medievals for the period of Las Navas! Actually, I have been trying to find a ruleset but haven't decided for one yet. I need to decide if I want to go for smaller games, Saga or Clash of Spears style, or something bigger. What do you have in mind?
They look good, the black works well.
Hmmm, maybe I should take 5 years off?
They look great.Keep up the good work.

Will you have an El Cid figure?
Mark
Lovely work so far! I'm interested in starting with Medievals, and precisely in Reconquista, so I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread ;)
Terrific job. Like the castle wall - is this one resin?
Quite right - up the workers!
Nicely done, all armies need more baggage and honest toilers in the field.
My first thought is
https://1stcorps.co.uk/product-category/medieval/peasants-camp-followers/
The shields in the second pack are a little late for you, but probably convertable/disguise-able.
My second thought is Front Rank:

excellent carts and loose bits of baggage.
All my subsequent thoughts :) tend to the Perry’s Agincurt range, again late for what you’re doing but there’s some suitable figures/easily convertable in there.
I got some baggage, Carts etc from Colonel Bill's
There are some pics on this link of my Crusades project! Page 4

With Colonel Bill's stuff, it's a mix and Match, so all units are sold separately as well all in a kit.
Not sure if conquest fig is on a sprue on his own. Foundry may do casualties.
I thought mine were Foundry, they are Perry's metal, Christian casualties (CU29 is the code) and Muslim (MA30)
After my hiatus from painting I'm beginning to find my feet again, so's to speak with the brush and get into the habit of picking the right hues etc.

Little pieces of art! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Cracking job! Nice to see you back with the brushwork!
Lovely work and it certainly looks like you have indeed found your feet.)
You've got to have a "Cid" for this time period. lol lol
Mark
The Cid is sticking this one out but his son Diego Rodriguez will be present.
I'll give you a penny if you can guess the battle?
Would it be his last one, Consuegra?
I'll take a cheque! lol lol lol lol lol lol
Hello,
Excellent paintjob !!! I like this project !!!
Nikkobourges
Good idea, although that is some dedication!
The old osprey book on the moors was always one of my favourites, and I find the medieval african empires really interesting, so I look forward to seeing these sudanese chaps painted.
He looks absolutely spiffing old bean, you've made a proper foaming at the mouth, religious nut job there matey!
I've got the same figure for my Mad Mullah, and have gone for a much brighter look, I'm thinking now that was a bad mistake.:-*
This is all looking very cool Atheling. your painting is super crisp and I like it.
My most enjoyable project was my Crusades Armies.
So much colour and diversity of troops, but, lots of cavalry!
Nice converts Atheling :-* :-* :-*
The asymmetric appeal of the 'Crusades period', in Spain or the Holy Land, makes it a must for 'medieval' players. The juxtaposition of the troop types just makes the games unpredictably great.
I just love it, and I love your work too: Outstanding brushwork!
Some really nice stuff.
Mark
Those vignettes are amazing! Really feels like they are getting battered by the desert sun.
Very immersive! Beautiful!
