A few months back I posted some pics of some of my first mainly-Perry WOTR units after I took up the hobby around July 2017.
Been plugging on since, and I've had the collection out in a couple of Lion Rampant games, and bought more stuff. The end goal is two varied armies, one Lancastrian, one Yorkist, of at least 300 minis each for a total of 600+ figs. So far up to about 120. (It's a long-term thing!)
Here's some of the most recent - pike and arquebus from the Perry European Mercenaries set. Burgundian livery (like the box cover). This is a great set with tons of variation and a good mix of weapons. I'll go back to it and do some crossbowmen once I've finished what I'm working on currently, which is six cavalry.
Comments and suggestions very welcome. While basically I want a massive army with loads of flexibility I also want to get good at painting. Trust me this is better than my first lot!
-
Nicely done :)
-
Excellent!
-
Painting looks good to me, good luck with the project :)
-
Looks like a great start - very neat. I admire your ambitious goals too - stick with this one project, don't be distracted. It will be worth it! You say you have 150 painted? Let's see some more then!
You also said you took up the hobby in 2017... Are you completely new to it, including figure painting? If so this is very impressive!
-
Cheers all - and Charlie I've been sticking to it like glue. It helps that I'm basically only interested [fixated?] with WOTR.
So technically I did paint some Warhammer Empire for a short while a 14-year-old 22 years ago (very badly). But it's basically like a new start.
Here's my first lot from last year. My word how time flies https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=104087.msg1294137#msg1294137
I'll post some more bits I've done since as well.
-
More units since last year;
-Edward IV and men-at-arms. Mixture of Perry metals and plastics. Flags by Pete’s Flags.
-First mounted man-at-arms (Front Rank figure).
-Yorkist billmen, all Perry Plastics.
-
Fantastic, the gilded armour on Edward is very impressive - what's your recipe?

Yeah that pretty much how it went for me too. Warhammer as a teenager, then gave it up. Then over a decade later was temped to take up the hobby again, this time purely historicals.
-
Charlie gilded armour is;
1. GW shining gold base
2. Liberal but careful wash of Agrax Earthshade
3. Re-apply shining gold as very dry dry brush, almost like you're buffing it back on
4. Pick out highlights with a brighter Vallejo gold, maybe mix in a bit of silver with it, but very subtle highlights, less is more.
I've actually done some better gold bits on other models which I'll post here soon.
If you fancy a game any time Charlie let me know. I've completely failed to find anyone local to me who's into WOTR/late medieval. Happy to travel from East Mids given my lot hardly ever make it out of the cupboard and onto a table!
-
Good luck with the project! My club and I are in full swing with a big Wars of the Roses project ourselves, and I'm looking for some minutes to share some pics.
-
Great stuff :)
-
Also just completed Perry metals Lancastrian command: Queen Margaret of Anjou, Henry VI, Duke of Buckingham & men-at-arms.
-
Lovely :-* I think your painting gets better and better.
-
Thanks I've tried to make each batch better than the last and I read a lot of blogs and watch tons of YouTube vids. A few people on Twitter have been super helpful too. Definitely getting there and might at least enter a competition in the new year even if its just to get trounced but pick up more tips!
-
A few more done - John De Vere, 13th Earl of Oxford, and various retainers on foot. Surcoat is his full heraldry. Flag on cotton. Stars are painted - not transfers. Wanted to try it, but it was a pain! Archers in his livery next. All Perry plastics from the foot men at arms set with a few additions from the bow and bill set for variation.
-
Very nice work on these figures! :) :)
-
Super freehand work. Well done 8)
-
Yes, that heraldry is very impressive, keep up the good work.
-
I've recently added a Perry mounted men-at-arms unit and I'm not far off some Burgundian crossbowmen. I also picked up a cannon and some of the Perry Irish Kern at the recent Partizan so progressing nicely. I've recently fallen in with the excellent Like a Stone Wall wargaming group, based in Notts, and I'm hopeful of convincing them to get a WOTR night going soon, so that will hopefully lead to a right old scrap and some great pics. St Albans I has been mooted. Wish me luck!
-
Great work, your freehands are nice !
-
Really impressed with your freehand work! keep it up!
-
Thanks both, crossbowmen are done, pics soon. The cannon is next, then the Perry Irish Kern.
-
Burgundian crossbow unit done. From the ultra-adaptable Perry European Mercenaries set. I almost didn't bother with the Pavises, but glad I did in the end. I also painted all these as torsos with arms off first, then glued on the arms later, thinking the crossbows would make life hugely difficult. I don't think they would have done in hindsight so won't bother with that again. I did paint the Pavises on the sprues though and that was definitely a good move.
Cannon and crew next.
-
Nicely done with the crossbows! Silly question but how did you get the weathering on the pavises done? It looks great!
-
Looking good. Nicely put together units with great freehand.
-
Thanks both - and the weathering is a brown wash splattered on with a brush, as in sort of flicked on off the bristles to create a kind of mud spatter. I mark them up with a scalpel for the cut marks and a pin for little pock marks/holes, and stick a dark wash in the marks.
-
I've recently completed a metal Perry Cannon, just in generic Lancastrian blue! I used a homemade mix of PVA, water and filler on the base to get a nice uneven surface and carve some muddy wheel marks.
-
Lovely stuff, has a really nice aged wood effect to the cannon
-
Put on a scenario last week and gave me the chance to take some pics of the full collection so far. 174 figures in total. About 500 still to go....it was only a game of Lion Rampant with a mate, but good excuse to get the lot out on a table divided into their Yorkist and Lancastrian halves.
-
Catching up with some of the bits I finished in the second half of 2019. These are Burgundian arquebus and pike. 250 figs in total now. Now I've got a nice flexible base collection built up I'm going to spend 2020 focusing on a large scale game re-fighting the battle Blore Heath. I should be able to get that done in the second half of 2020. I've got the bulk of the Yorkists really - a Lancastrian top-up of a Lord Audley retinue, and some wagons for Yorkists, should pretty much get me there.
-
Great stuff :-*
-
Some more from the last couple of weeks - I've been focusing on individual characters recently for a change of scenery before I start building up my next retinue. Here's a captain for my Burgundian contingent. I tried out 'non metallic metal' and some glazing. Just experimenting really with things I'd not done before.
-
And here's a Yorkist drummer (Foundry) and Henry VI and Burgundian drummer (both Perry). It was nice to experiment a bit with single models. I'm probably going to tinker a bit with flock and tufts rather than static grass in future. I'm going off static grass on bases a bit......
-
The non-metal-metal's turned out really well! Mind if I ask how you did it?
-
Lovely job on that Burgundian captain 8)

Cheers - he took AGES but I'm glad I tried it!

Sure - basically - using a wet pallet, get a good mixture going of very dark grey, almost black, right the way through to white.
Pick a single light angle - here it's as if you are looking at the mini head on and the light is coming more or less straight down on him.
Now think carefully about all the points of reflection on the armour - the tiny brightest points will be white, the dullest bits grey. Mix a tiny bit of very dark blue into the mid tones to create a steel effect.
Layer up as normal - I think there's something like 6-7 tones/layers in this dark grey to white.
Use a really thin glaze of the most middle tone to smooth over the blends between colours.
It sounds intimidating if you've not tried it before - but I was amazed at the result.
There's a good video by Vince Venturella on this - obviously he can do it much better than me, but the principle is the same;

Those faces are just about the most realistic I've ever seen at this scale. Well done that man!
-
Great thread - lots of inspiration for my own WOTR project - keep it coming

These are some excellently painted figures.
I love the idea of using a non-metallic palette. I will give it a try on my Perry WoRs.
Its a big thing among flat/zinnfiguren painters. Mike Taylor 's the Art of Painting Flat Tin Figure has an excellent technical section on this. It well worth a read and the images are outstanding. I had a stab at the approach with a flat of Joan of Arc, with oils. I didn't nail it at all but it was fun to do and am on the look for another flat to have a second attempt on.

Thanks and I think you did a GREAT job. I’ll look this up. It’s something I really want to try to master for the odd command fig. But no more!…
-
Super brushwork,
I have put it in the to hard basket for me to attempt non metallics -metallic, in awe of those that can, I am too busy pumping out troops to try I think.
Cheers
Matt

A few more from the last few weeks. Also apologies if anyone has already seen these given I post most stuff of note also to Twitter and Instagram @winston_ab_rees accounts. Also sometimes in medieval wargames group on Facebook, but here seems best place for proper tips and feedback.
These are Audley retinue for Blore Heath. Using Vallejo steel metal colour, with some black mixed in.
Last one is Perry metal Irish gallowglass. I experimented with flock on base for this instead of static grass. Rather like it.
-
Great painting. Love the Irish gallowglass.
-
Lots of great work on this thread. Nice touch on the cannon wheel marks. I have been thinking of switching over to more flock and less static grass on my bases as well. It certainly looks good on your Gallowglasses.
-
Great painting, the armour is especially good :-*
-
Hello all, catching up with some bits again. Just finished a Perry mounted men at arms unit, and I’ve taken a photo of about half the Burgundian mercenaries. The models look great as a group and are from the excellent Perry European Mercenaries set. So many options.
-
Looking good Winston 8)
-
Looking great!
Silly question but how do you paint the Burgundian blue there?

I use this Vallejo triad. The imperial blue in particular is a great colour.
-
A few more added during lockdown. This project is now at circa 400 figs and after three years is at the halfway point. It's a marathon not a sprint!
Here's a few - sorry again if I'm doubling up what with the Twitter and Insta accounts,
-Beaufort retinue complete with mix of Perry metal characters and plastic billmen, and Foundry archers. They scale ok together as two units close to each other. Although won't be mixing billmen and archers side by side.
-Also a general retinue - Perry plastics again with a little bit of kit bashing. These will be used to act as lesser lords or to bump up numbers for existing units I have.
-And two Perry wagons and wagoneers.
-
Fab stuff Winston :-* :-* :-*
I love the inclusion of the ubiquitous Foundry , "They're behind us!" mini :)
-
Excellent work!
-
Lovely painting 😍
-
Some really nice work.
-
Lovely brushwork
Cheers

Hello all - I've started a YouTube channel which will document my progress on this project as well as featuring other tutorials, interviews with interesting people etc.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNGJLwMtlgnXn2_0eqBJhYQ (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNGJLwMtlgnXn2_0eqBJhYQ)
Next I'm having a short foray into Saxons - then some more WOTR light cavalry as the road to Blore Heath continues.
-
great stuff... :)
-
Latest unit is 6 scurrers from the Perry Light cavalry set. These will help form the line of cavalry for a Blore Heath game in November.
-
They look great. Well done 8)
-
Nice, I really like the colours you've used on them!
-
Excellent work. :-*
It's great that you've gone for more muted colours rather than the more garish look 8)
-
Thank you everyone. Excited for the big Blore Heath game in November now. It’s only taken 3 years to kick off big scale WotR battles... ...should be well worth it though.

Will the Blore Heath game be featured in any mags perchance?
-
I’ll have a damn good bash at convincing someone to run it! Otherwise... ...I’ll put a write up in here with a million photos. :)

Either way is good for me :)
-
Some more updates. Just waiting for restrictions to ease now so Blore Heath can happen. Hopefully before Christmas. Latest additions have been some lovely Steel Fist miniatures men-at-arms for a little variation, plus some Salisbury bowmen and a top-up of Warwick bowmen too.
-
Quite the collection you are putting together.
I recently came across your YouTube videos “Interviews With The Masters”, great work 👍
-
Subtle and tasteful 8)
Although I personally tend to paint figures in a bright, bold, high-contrast style, I always admire the knocked-back look when it's well executed like this.
-
Thanks both. Captain B interesting that we paint the same miniatures so differently! Your much brighter and smoother stuff is wonderful, and I too can see/appreciate its obvious benefits. When I was starting out it seemed wise to stick to a simple and grimy look because frankly it was easier for me but it’s definitely stuck and sort of become a style I’ve ended up ‘refining my. Kind of.
-
Just a simple light cavalry top up this week. Perry Plastics. I experimented with wet blending a lot on these and was pleasantly surprised. Five weeks until big Blore Heath game.
-
Coming along nicely. Liking the horse colours 8)
-
Earthy tones work superbly well...great stuff
-
Hi all. A few final images before this project is declared ‘done’ and goes into the background for a big new ECW project.
I’ve topped out 600 figures, about 400 of them Perry Plastic, the rest metal. They’ve taken part in 3 big battles, a few small, and I’m off to the Billhooks Bash in Derby in September with them too. All in all an amazing first project and they will no doubt be added to now and again in future but for now they’ll take a back seat painting wise, although I’ll be gaming with them later in the year plenty.
-
Splendid collection - well done Winston 8)
-
Lovely additions Winston :-*
EDIT: If it is completed, what's next mate?

Thanks a lot - and next up is a big ECW collection. I’ll be doing a ‘big long’ post thread in Renaissance for that too!

Good to hear! The Second Edition of Billhooks will have an Italian Wars section. ;) :)
-
Excellent 8)
-
Outstanding collection! Well done - inspiring photos.
-
Just to add to my earlier post; the Billhooks Bash sounds like a great laugh, I would dearly love to attend but I'm one of the who's attendance might be one of the last things I do re: you know what. :(
Sadly, I have a feeling their is going be many events where I could just not risk it.....
-
Excellent work!!
-
Fantastic work Chris. I hope to see them in the flesh sometime in 2022 :)
-
Great collection, WoTR is another project on the list to do but not sure if I'll do 15mm or 6mm....I'm leaning towards 6mm due to the cost if I did the big project with Peter Pig 15mm (I used to have hundreds of them, all unpainted and I sold them a few years ago.....regrets >:( )
-
A magnificent collection. Bravo.
