Ancient German Batavian Revolt, edit!
«

It's been many years since I painted up a huge mountain of Wargames Foundry Germans.
Sadly I sold them on.
But now I fancy painting some more!
I've got hold of a reasonable amount of figures but need a few more.
My question is this,
Are there any other Ancient German ranges out there that will work along side the big Copplestone sculpts from Foundry?
So far I'm thinking of mixing a few from Black Tree and maybe Warlord Games?
I'm not sure about the offerings from Crusader, but it could be the paint job on the web page that puts me off?
I've even thought of making a few characters using Copplestones own Caveman range!
Cheers

The Crusader,Warlord and Black Tree figures work together.
Some of the Black Tree are very nice figures and they have a sale, every other month!
Footsore Miniatures ,make early Saxons which are well worth a look

The Warlord metals are by Steve Saleh and they are really good. the pictures on the Warlord site hardly do them justice. I got some a couple of weeks ago and I really like them. They are only slightly slimmer than the Foundry ones and the poses are more dynamic but they work well together.
The Crusader ones unfortunately are a bit bigger and have static poses. Depending on the period you want to do, they now do early Saxons/Franks too, but I don't own them, so I don't know for scale.
There's also Newline Designs that apparently size up well with Foundry.

Then there is 1st Corps, but I don't know about size or proportions.

You should take a look at the 1st Corps / Curteys Miniatures Germans - they would match the Foundry Germans very well.

Out of interest does anyone know how Victrix ancients size up next to the Foundry Germans? I'm thinking ahead to next year when Victrix will hopefully release their Ancient Germans, and hoping they will be compatible with Foundry and size and style.

Ok,
So I've gone down the route of Ancient Germans.
What sort of units would I expect to use in a Batavian revolt allied force?
So far I'm thinking,
A solid core of 3 big units of long spear armed stubborn warriors.
A single unit of fanatics.
Cavalry and some skirmish troops
A single unit of high quality Roman auxiliaries, (I'm allowed 20% Roman auxiliary as allies)

If I were to do the same army I'd use a Roman auxiliary unit with some minor conversions (beards, or some weapon swaps) as a bodyguard/core representing the revolting romanised troops.
and including normal Germanics as Batavian and allied tribes for the majority of figures. Possibly leaders in Roman armour.
Allied Celtic cavalry (- Foundry Caesarian Celts)
Germanic fanatics, just because.

I'm thinking that the new Victrix models will help with the auxiliary unit.
So a similar design of army to mine mentioned above?
Good, seems like I'm on the right track!
Cheers

Very tempting to do the same. I was born and raised in west-Frisia and always wanted to do frisians, batavians or early franks.
