Title: I'm declaring War on my "Wargaming" crap, I invite you to join me.
Post by: WallyTWest on December 31, 2016, 06:03:30 AM
This Christmas marked 20 years of warhammer and hobby gaming for me, and left me feeling rather conflicted- and a tad bit angry when I began to do an inventory last night...

Thanks to Age of Sigmar, Inflated Edition Model Counts, Constant new games, dozens of one hit wonder companies - it's a pile of plastic that is "worthless".

There is no room for it, I only have so much room for this crap and the stuff is in a glorified pile in my new basement. Even new, modern and "elegant" systems like XWing are not immune to this disease of disorginization and dis-intrest... So many wasted purchases and so many unused painted tin figures it's redicilious.

So, I hope I am not embarrassing myself- but today due to its in-numeral sins I hereby declare war on my Hobby Gaming- I am going to cut this pile of crap in two and make sense of it this year... Play more games and get rid of an enormous pile of old models and dead gaming weight.

pictures forthcoming mid January-

Do it.  I've been selling off lots of random odds/ends that I simply won't ever get around to.  I've kept my interests narrowed to a handful of projects and it's far more rewarding.  My hobby goal this next year is simply to clean up my paint desk...organize my paints (order a new stand), replace my aging hobby tools and replace all of my beat up brushes.

I'll be watching the Bazaar with interest   :D

You can never have too much crap.

Culling the herd is easy, but not buying more crap is the real challenge! I sell all the time, and then get new stuff! This year I also.hope to improve...

Not "no minis!", just fewer, and with purpose!

Cleared out all of my Necromunda and 40K last year, still need help rationalising what I have left.....

Before I retired, I collected a mountain of books, DVDs and figures to keep me occupied, but after 30 months I can hardly see a dent in it.  Do I really need BP armies for SYW, Napoleonics and ACW?

I'm not throwing anything in the Bazar- I will make large boxes full of farming goodies-

If you pay for shipping, you get the box.

I'm already there :) I did a sizeable cull a little while ago but really just want to rid myself of the excess "stuff"... it's frustrating just knowing it's there and won't like be used. So the solution is just to get rid of it.

Looking forward to hearing it how it goes!

Yep, I plan on a 'purge' this year as well.

And a straight up ban of Kickstarters filled with plastic miniatures....

Hah!  No problem.  Sorting the stuff, getting rid of it is easy.  So easy, in fact, that I have done it dozens of times!
 :D lol

This sounds like fun, and a good idea too! Though, I must admit I would be tempted to pay for shipping for a box, just for the surprise of what is inside!

:o None of us is immune to this strange fenonomem!!!  :o

Several years ago I decided to replace my 20mm Wild West collection... with 54mm big boy's toys. The Imperial Decree I gave myself was that everything I had in 20mm would have to be replicated. I know have hundreds of Britains Deetail Cavalry, Cowboys and Indians. The town of Dead man's Gulch sports 15 buildings that are worth more than my real house. When I went really zoony and the Railroad arrived it was in the shape of the 'Prairie Rocket' train set, I could have bought the real 'Flying Scotsman' for the price of that little bleeder! There's three Cavalry forts and an Indian village, herds of Buffalo, Grizzly bears, rattlesnakes and vultures...

:o When will this lunacy ever end!!!???  :o

Takes me back a bit.  You mentioned 'crude' separate weapons came with Swoppets.  I'm pretty sure the 'crude' weapons were Timpo, the Swoppets were super detailed.  Back in the day (mid 1970s), my first club did a lot of 54mm gunfight using Britains Deetail figures.  They had drilled the hands out and replaced them with separate weapons.  When I got back into 54mm I never could find them but I believe that they may have been made by Greenwood & Ball.

Well, I'll always want to buy less, paint more and game more but alas, when wanted - not needed, but wanted - miniatures start to pop up it's really difficult to ignore them so I stopped worrying about that. As for games and kickstarters, I came to my senses and really started to think if I really must go all-in on plastic boardgaming pieces and expansions I probably never will play/use.
So yes, I cut a little bit on buying and started to play more often but still...  :'(
I used to sell some excess models a few times, but I stopped to, since I tend to buy them again if they ever pop up ( or another crazy idea/project comes to mind ), so it's not worth the hassle. Yes, I do have issues  lol.

Yep, you're right there SM, Timpo were cheap and cheerful. Yet I've seen this little chap go for seventy quid on evilbay...

Do you guys realize what Timpo figurines go for in the toy collectors' market these days?

Some years ago I stumbled on some of my childhood Timpo knights, and thought I would see if they were still available. Almost got a heart attack when I found some...

I think the sheriff in the above post is a good pointer.  :o

He's really Doctor Thaddeus Tripp, I got him with the medicine wagon and use him as Marshal Wyatt Twerp...
