Amazing what photography can do ( or not do ). I've seen that Reaper Mage in the flesh and it really is a great, smooth painted model but on the photo it looks like a quick grainy brushjob...
Makes me wonder about some other entries, how much quality and detail is lost in the photo's..  :'(

Yeah, I think this is an inherent problem with online painting competitions. The quality of the photo--which is driven by a lot of complex factors (not all of which are in the photographer's/painter's control)--has a significant impact on the perceived quality of the painted model. I know I have stressed about it more than once over my own photos...but I am not sure there is a lot that can realistically be done...When I vote I try to factor in this knowledge to my decision making, that is my small attempt to account for this issue.

I've been thinking about starting a generic LPL tips topic, not only about the technical side of photography but composition and general ideas too. There are so many things I've learnt the hard way and probably many more that I haven't realised yet but someone else out there has. While it's a bit late already, there are still many rounds remaining...

I did one of those once. By the look of things since, I don't think many people took much notice  ;)
I'm sure it's still around somewhere in the LPL archive board...

Are you hinting that there could be some current participants who have not memorised a topic from 2011? lol

But yeah, that's a great starting point. I believe the same principles still apply, although there's probably room for expansion too.

I have it bookmarked and actually went through it and made use of it during former LPLs. This year though, I'm continiously pressed for time. this LPL is more for myself to paint some models and enjoy the views, while in the meanwhile getting motivated enough to start on building a good photo setup in my mancave :)
Why aim for gold if you can get lead?

@Dolmot--I would certainly welcome this.  :)
