Title: Agis Horus Heresy Marines - Custodes
Post by: Agis on January 06, 2013, 02:48:20 PM
Before reading the excellent Horus Heresy Novel “ Flight of the the Eisenstein” I always disliked the Death Guard. To be honest the whole Chaos gods - and the Lord of Decay in particular - idea of 40K is not appealing at all to me. The Horus Heresy books changed that a lot. I really liked the way Garro acted and even more in the following short stories centred on him.

So when Forge World previewed the Death Shroud Terminators I was hooked. So time for a start - 1st test minis painted.

I will use the minis also when playtesting my Victory Decision SciFi rules, so expect a lot more in the next months.

I was also positively surprised how well the HH Marines Mk III scales up next to a Forge World Imperial Guard. The Marine DOES look big enough!

To be fair that is quite a nice mini although I am certainly not a GW/FW fan, the paint however is lovely.  Great colour choices and execution. Now get some more done.

Gorgeous. I'm all about Death Guard in 40k to be honest. Pre and Post-Heresy. You got the termies too then? Looking forward to seeing more.  :D

Not yet, but I think I will eventually get me Mortarion and his Death Shroud Bodyguard, all mounted in a Spartan Assault tank...

I really like the Horus Heresy books and would really like to game that with the forge world miniatures, maybe this thread is the eye candy I need!

Beautiful painting as always Agis!

I remember reading Garro's back story way back in the space marine (first edition epic) rulebook.. Flight of the eisenstein brought this to life and when the viral bombs hit it was a genuinely emotional moment.

Lovely painting Agis as ever. The price tag of forge world stuff will always preclude me from getting any in any number, but ive plenty of old school minis to work on.

Keep em coming mate.

Absolutely, a Dreadnought and a tanks are already primed and partly  painted.
4 more Marines and an Apothecary are being built.

Apothecary? Voyen I supposed. Do you plan to paint Iacton Qruze too?

Great stuff, Agis, beautiful paintwork!
 :-*

I admit that each of the HH novels (all of them except Abyss) that I have read has given me several ideas for projects in the 40k universe.
I did have a Death Guard army many years ago and will always have a soft spot for them, so I will be following this thread avidly and let you do all the hard work and pretend they are mine.
That way I dont have to buy/make/paint anything but can get the feeling that I have.
 :D

Thank you, Agis!

The Horus Heresy books (for the most part) are the only worthwhile thing GW has put out in the past 10 years.  Hell, I'd even consider playing it with some Forgeworld models and a different rules set.  Nice mini!

Great pj, Agis! Look forward to follow this thread :)

@Prof:
You're in for a treat then! The first 6 novels are rather good, with Legion being my particular favourite. You can skip the Dark Angel books though, they're rather poorly written.

The whole series is of variable worth.

Pretty much everyone agrees that the first five are the best, after that opinion seems to be divided on most, but some are liked by most: Legion, First Heretic, A Thousand Sons and Prospero Burns being my particular favourites but others may disagree.

Looking forward to seeing Agis' take on this theme as his painting style will suit the subject matter very well.

The best for meare the 1st 2 books, Fulgrim and A Thousand Sons. Plus the Garro novellas. (Or should I say Audiollas?)  ;)
The recent "Angel Exterminatus" was also very good for me. I just love Fulgrims vanity!

Prospero Burns was a big disappointment for me. Dan is IMO getting a bit carried away in his latest books, while Graham gets better and better!

I do agree. And the Angel Extirminatus also had some grim Iron Warriors and Iron Hands. A book that contains the two sourest chapters can't be anything than good ;)

Next one done...
After showing the pics in of the initial posting I received a lot of requests about a small tutorial. Normally I really do not like to write about how I paint my minis, since there is NOTHING special. Just all the techniques that are explained over and over on the net anyway.

But - here we go:
Read the rest here ->> http://www.adpublishing.de/html/death_guard.html (http://www.adpublishing.de/html/death_guard.html)

Thanks for the tips, Agis, much appreciated.

Compared to forgeworld prices collecting Rogue Trader era miniatures is almost cheap  ::)

And yes - FW is darn expensive, but lets face it - most of us are having a huge lead/ plastic pile anyway. If we would just buy the minis we paint, we could easily afford FW.

Next painted model, a Deimos pattern Predator tank, armed with Autocannon and sponson mounted Lascannons. The Lascannons are fully magnetised to make swaps with Heavy Bolters possible.

And a detail shot of the tank commander:

Also some news from the “print on demand” version of Gear Krieg, layout is over 40% done. I will finish it over the weekend, then cover work, spine and off we go to the test print. After approval the book will go live. End of February might be realistic!

I really dislike NMM, source lightning, flame blast, fumes etc etc etc  on minis, too busy for me!

After a small hiatus again a picture.
Nathaniel Garro wearing a mixture of Mk III and IV armour and his sword libertas.

Some info on the mini: it is of course based on the SM mini from the Master of the Chapter box. Since the PF would be not fitting and Garro often wears Mk IV armour I used a suitable hand and helmet. I then added an Aquila to a MkIV backpack and repositioned the head. The idea is to have him wear a prototype armour.

I've just found this thread and have really enjoyed looking at your fantastic work. Although I'm not generally impressed by the stuff GW's been doing in the last few years, I think that FW's output gets better and better and you've only reinforced that view (though I understand that you've done a fair bit of converting!). I look forward to seeing more.

Precisely.  The only worthwhile thing GW puts out now are some of their Horus Heresy books.  That coupled with Forgeworld's infinitely better take on GW's IP imagery, and the end result is the most interesting thing in a long time.

I'm actively pursuing selling off any GW tainted products that I own, but this thread is incredible.  If "this" is what 40K was (and the rules are 10x better) I'd actually still be playing it.  Brilliant work.

10- 15 Marines are in fact more or less a full force in Planetfall...

The III rd Legion - Emperors Children

As with the Death Guard I totally dislike 40K EC. Way to colourful and queer for my taste (well as long as a tabletop army is concerned).  ;)
The way they are presented in the Heresy novel is a different thing, very much to my liking. A warrior brotherhood sworn to achieve martial perfection with a vain leader who constantly is doing the wrong thing out of often good reasons.
So when the opportunity was there to get a decent painted Heresy style EC army, I had to jump at it. So when Peter Zuidgeest of Scars was selling his army we quickly reached an agreement, roughly 2/3 of his force was sold to the US and I took the rest.
As you can see the minis are very nicely done with some cool Source lightning effects. But still I wanted to change something. The freehand numbering is a bit sloppy IMO for a Legion so vain. The bases are IMO a bit too distracting for rank and file trooper.

So I changed the minis to look like the mini below. Only a subtle difference, but more to my liking. And as strange as it sounds - now it is really MY mini. So within the next weeks you will see some more EC from me!

OK, on to Fulgrim, not only one of my favourite Primarchs, the FW mini is just too good to be missed!

I am with you on the 40K EC being more than a little 'naff', but Heresy era EC are great.
That Fulgrim model is stunning.
This is going to be a truly beautiful army when finished.

To be fair, I think the Tempus Fugitives (and Stuart Mackenass in particular) proved its popularity, backed by sales of Red Scorpions for conversion purposes.

Gotta agree with you Agis.
I have to admit that every time I read a new novel I feel the 'itch' to do some 30K.

It is only that I would never use them that stops me.

And the effect of the “Agisfication” on a Heavy Support Squad. Again bases changed, transfers applied, banner repainted, metal effects added, some retouches here and there.
BTW - I have to say that Peters Light effects are absolutely top notch, he even takes into account that the targeting system of the 2 running Marines are still unlit! Very nice details and clever posing.

And a mini painted all by myself... ;)
Apothecary Crassus in his Mk IV Armour, please note the squad number “728” on the Geneseed tube. Crassus is currently assigned to Tactical Squad 728.

WIP - Tactical Support Squad. Peter sold me a 10 Marine Tactical Squad using the 40K Codex. Consequently he included 1 Meltagun and a Heavy Plasma Cannon. The melta Marine is the nucleus of a Tactical Support Squad.

Of all 3 versions of the Marine Land Speeder I always like the chunky full metal 2nd edition one the most. Since I still had one around I bribed Peter to paint one for me.

Splendid work from him as usual, I only had to apply some transfers do some some weathering and the basing. The original Flamer broke off during transport which pushed me into the right direction to mount and paint a Heavy Bolter.

The Forge World Mechanicus Castellax robot that is due out soon looks great too, although Im not certain that I like the new, snail-like tech-priest.  All the same, its the Ad Mech stuff that has me bracing myself for a Forge World order one of these days.

Its a shame to sully your nice thread with ridiculous photos like that Agis.  Plenty of vitriol about those figures in this thread (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=56907.0) already :)

I try not to get involved in GW bashing - I just buy the things that I like and ignore the rest - but the toy-like aesthetic for the marines has been getting progressively worse since the Stormraven.  The smaller flyer that came out last year is awful and these guys ("Centurions" is it?) suck.

I dont like those figures, but I do think that a couple of minor changes and a less absurd paint scheme could make them in to good industrial space miners.  Like something from Star Mogul.  But at that price, I dont myself doing it any time soon.

That old plastic dreadnought was always really nice.

When the first walking sarcophagus dread was first released I was disgusted that it didnt look like that little guy.  The newer (that is, twenty year old) design grew on me, but that one is still my favourite.

One of the points I will always fail to understand is GWs marketing strategy.
They could make a fortune with a 15mm Heresy Game, just imagine all the FoW craze and add the Horus Heresy IP!

Some more 30K stuff, next week more Victory Decision Planetfall related generic SF minis!

Pretty much the same techniques as on the Marine statue.

Emperors Children on the Aquila...

Bionic Arms and Legs by Anvilindustries, all the rest by Forge World
And a new section on my website: http://www.adpublishing.de/html/iron_hands.html (http://www.adpublishing.de/html/iron_hands.html)

The Iron Hands chapter came to my attention when reading the fantastic Fulgrim novel by Graham McNeal. The story of there steadfast Primarch Ferrus Manus was much to my liking. More or less by accident I painted two minis in their colours using the really good conversion parts of Anvilindustires. Since I was delighted how fast I could paint them I finished 5 Marines. At that time the first FW Iron Hands previews came around - and whuups - I was hooked!

Thanks folks!

Seamless appearance between FW and AI. Are they made from the same sort of resin?

The quality of the AI resin castings is IMO BETTER than FW!
Less flash - more or less non-existent - and less bendy.
I can only recommend AI, they also have a very good response time and are generous if something was shipped wrong.

Title: Re: Agis Horus Heresy Marines - update May 25 - Angron
Post by: Agis on May 25, 2014, 11:38:28 AM
I finally came around to finish my next Primarch - Angron. An good opportunity to give the World Eaters their own section. Also new are some Epic scale Iron Hands.

As with most Chaos Legions I only started to like them while reading the Horus Heresy Novels. The brutes of 40K are not my thing, the savage but noble warriors of 30K who followed their hyper- aggressive Primarch Angron no matter what are more to my liking.
The awesome Forge World model of Angron tempted me even more. For Angron I tried a look of a truly aggressive warrior who did not care at all about his armour or appearance. So old school metal effects, some rust and a slightly dirty look.
The Assault Marine is a FW MkII model with an axe from Anvil Industries, I simply like their axes more.

More -> http://www.adpublishing.de/html/world_eater.html (http://www.adpublishing.de/html/world_eater.html)

I recently started an EPIC Armageddon side project. I always loved EPIC A since its release and think that the huge battles of the Heresy just need to be also played in EPIC! I plan to paint an Emperors Children and an Iron Hands army. Below is a Tactical squad (repaint of my Black Templars, therefore the Missile Launcher) with Rhino and a Sicaran tank. The Sicaran is a private sculpt of a fellow enthusiast and not commercially available.

yup, 15mm would be a better scale for 40K, the background is pretty good, they just totally lost their way trying to make it a large battle game in 28mm when it was best suited to skirmish games at that scale, that and the rules don't match the fluff.

The new Prospero GW box inspired me to finally finish my Magnus mini, it was standing for months half finished on my paint table...

I suppose you won't be getting the gigantic new (likely $80) Magnus figure then?  lol

To be honest I will end up buying the demon Magnus and the eventually coming out Heresy FW Magnus too...  ::)
Magnus is one of my favorite most tragic characters of the Heresy.

I love it but Magnus looks a wee bit like he is in the middle of a musical number.

" Things have always been strange
But we hate to see them change
For change brings growth
And all that grows must die!

Treachery surrounds us
Below
within
and all around us
Betrayal even takes to wing
in the sky!

There is no pause to rest
No mercy in this dreadful test
That means it's always best
To Keep an
EYE out
For the unseen
Keep an eye out
For what's written between

When loyalty is betrayal
You must betray to stay true!
For the truth is woven from the very lies
That your own eye tells to you!

Your own father might desert you
Send your brother
to down-in-the-dirt you
This universe longs to pervert  you
But it's ALWAYS
what you DON'T KNOW
That will hurrrrrrt Yooouuuuuuuuu!
"

He is. Look closer, the miniature only has one eye remaining.

The Epic 40k daemon primarch mini is a "proper" cyclops. http://www.solegends.com/citcat1995-6/cat19956p153-00.htm

The 30k pre heresy version just has one eye.

IMO the aftermarket mini is pretty close to the description of Magnus during the Heresy. I am already curious how FW will present him...

They did rip the miniature sculpt from the Heresy art so not a surprise.

Great, more TS content! That's a nice rendition of the Crimson King indeed. If maybe a tad too small and boney? Cool paintjob nonetheless.
Pretty much looking forward to the Forgeworld version (here's hope Magnus' garish 40k incarnation is nothing to go by).

As soon as the HH Prospero Box arrived I just had to paint a SiS. I always like the SiS and their strange background. The great Graham McNeill immortalised them in his novel "A Thousand Sons " - IMO one of the best Horus Heresy books!

The model is really good, not just good, really good. The picture below with my 15 years old SoB models clearly show the way GW (and also my painting) have come. It also shows the famous scale and base size creep... ;)
As far as painting is concerned, I wanted a clean gold look. More or less like described in GWs paint booklet. For the head I wanted a more battle worn look, the Sisters is in service on Prospero so no time to daily shave her head, therefore the darker look. Hope you like it.

Gorgeous paintwork.  Not my favourite minis of the new box, but cool to see them branching out (and giving players a lot of avenues etc.)

Cracking painting Agis! :-*

Do you not think they have a very Dark Eldar aesthetic? Pointy knee pads and plate armour!

Yes, that's why so many gamers converted SiS from female Dark Eldar models.

Wow, your painting is AWFUL! Please finish the rest of the Custodes and sisters, then send them to me to scrutinise in detail, then I'll send you mine with a note telling you where you went wrong.

Alright, they look ok

After painting Kill Team Sons of Horus and Death Guard marines I was in the mood to revisit my Dath Guard!

Mortarion is the third Forge World Primarch I painted. I took some extra time painting him, but the dirtiness of the Death Guard made it a bit less challenging as painting a cleaner Legion, let’s say the Emperors Children’s Fulgrim.
Overall a fun mini to paint, only the resin work is as painful as always.
I changed the colours a bit, most people paint the 30K Mortarion with a dirty white Robe, I wanted a darker look on his way to the dark goods.
So dark grey hood and robe. I even took a hint from the painting techniques of the great Ana Polanšćak and sprinkled some white dots on the mini!

While working on Mortarion I remembered that I also have the Tyhon mini lying around, so I build him also and batch painted both in one run, the colours were just the same.

Nathaniel Garro wearing a mixture of Mk II and IV armour and his sword libertas. Some info on the rebased mini: it is of course based on the SM mini from the Master of the Chapter box. Since the PF would be not fitting and Garro often wears Mk IV armour I used a suitable hand and helmet. I then added an Aquila to a MkIV backpack and repositioned the head. The idea is to have him wear a prototype armour.

The first half squad rebased to the current 32mm bases.

Some new pics of older models!

Eisenstein Coverboy
The mini below is my attempt to convert a Marine with the look of the Marine from the “Flight of the Eisenstein” novel cover.

A Contemptor Dreadnought with Meltagun and Powerfist. The Melta and Fist are fully magnetised and the shoulder part is pinned and movable to make weapon swaps possible.

Next painted model, a Deimos pattern Predator tank, armed with Autocannon and sponson mounted Lascannons. The Lascannons are fully magnetised to make swaps with Heavy Bolters possible.

How is the weathering on the tank achieved; oils or normal washes?

A Scibor conversion - a Power Armour Custodes. I recently rebased the mini to the current base size and changed the weapon, shield and backpack (courtesy of Tortuga Bay minis!). I will use it as a 29K Custodes at the very end of the Terra unification war. The other mini is a collaboration of Scibor and me. An old Constantine Valdor sculpt with current weapon and backpack to give this character a more 29K ish feel and look.
