Title: Dutch vs Spanish at Clotted Lard
Post by: whiskey priest on September 11, 2018, 04:35:30 PM
On Saturday the Exeter war-games club hosted its first Lardy day and I was lucky enough to be bale to run a game during the day. Below you can see some of the pics and there are more on the Blog alongside descriptions of the two games that we played.

I'm keen to find out what actual figure counts and orgs were used on the day. I have some Pike and Shotte lurking in storage.

Easily Done, In Sharp Practice, a single group of infantry is 8 Figures. These can then organised into formations of two or more Groups and these would be officered by Big man figure of various levels.

Dutch
3 Blocks of 16 Pike
2 Blocks of 16 Arquebus
1 Block of 16 Musketeers
12 Skirmishing Arquebus (two groups of 6)
1 Group of 8 Halberdiers
1 Group of 8 Reiters
1 Light Cannon

Spanish
2 Blocks of 16 Pike
1 Block of 16 Arquebus
1 Block of 16 Musketeers
12 Skirmishing Arquebus (two groups of 6)
1 Group of 8 Sword and Buckler men
1 Group of 8 Lancers

The Dutch had 9 command figures and the Spanish had 8. Hope that helps.

How well does Sharp Practise translate to the 16th century ?  I see that its intended period begins 1700 (lot less armor then, vice late 16th).

We played using a variant that was specifically written for the period and published in the 2017 Lardy Summer special. It makes changes to the formations that troops use and gives specific bonuses to shooting and combat that encourages you to use these rather than later line tactics. Armour is treated as a cover when it comes to shooting and it has an effect on the number of dice you receive in combat. It works pretty well. It's part of the reason that I like the Lardy games, the fact that with a bit of thought and imagination the games are easily useable in a variety of settings.
