Three Mexicans to 1 base counting as a single figure would work really well and allow some recycling to be done.

R&P would be perfect.

A little more progress on the project. Those open gateways and that huge hole in the southeast wall looked a bit vulnerable so I thought that some barricades were in order. I bought an assortment of ready-made barricades by Ainsty and Alternative Armies. It’s more than I need for this project but you can never have too many barricades.

Front and back

The main entrances

That gaping hole in the wall

Next time, I’ll post some shots of the troops.

I’ve finally got the troops painted. There are literally hundreds of them.

I’ve made the Mexican forces into two separate commands, the regulars and a large contingent of militia. Here are some photos of the militia and I’ll follow up with the regulars later in the week.

Historical accounts of the battle mention lots of cavalry, but cavalry is pretty much useless in this kind of fight. So, the few mounted troops I’ve included will actually be used as “mounted skirmishers” according to the R&P rules, which are a bit more useful.

The militia infantry are a mix of Gringo40, Old Glory, First Corps, Artizan and WF as well as a few others. The difference in scale between the Gringo40s and the Foundry figures is especially pronounced, with the others covering a middle ground between the two. For that reason, I was careful to segregate the sizes when I based them. However, I noticed that something magical happens when you put them all together in a mass and the differences seem to smooth out.

This all looks great!  Looking forward to more progress.  Were you able to get a game in on April 30?

Sadly, no. I still hadn't finished enough of the troops by that point. But I've got a game scheduled for the 26th this month. I'll be sure to take some pictures then.

Here are the last remaining elements of the project, the Mexican regular troops and the FFL troops.

I painted the regulars in two different schemes. There’s really no difference between them, just that some are wearing their summer whites. But it was an easy way to differentiate the different units.

The antique cannon will play no part in this particular battle, but it might end up on the table on another night.

As with the militia, the mounted troops represent “mounted skirmishers” and not cavalry.

The entire FFL force totals just 36 figures against this horde of enemies. I imagine the game will end up looking like the final scene from the Wild Bunch, only with fewer machine guns. Most of the FFL are from Gringo40 but a few are from WF.

The casualty figures will be used as status markers.
