So one of my gaming buddies asked me to give 28mm moderns a go, and after lurking around this board, I decided to jump in. Upon seeing tancrede's French force, I decided the Sahel conflicts is what I wanted to game, particularly Mali in the 2010's. While I have a French force forthcoming, I've started with a band of Islamic and Tuareg insurgents:

I still have some more to paint, but am relatively happy with my start (still getting used to painting camouflage) There are more photos on the blog if you're interested:

Thanks!

NIce work Chris, though I hate to see you shift your focus from BOB.
-
Thanks! I’m about out of paper textures for the BOB buildings, but once I can access agin to the large size laser printer, I should be back in business :D
-
They look great, really nice mix of camo patterns and colours.

As Ash said, a good variety of paint schemes - nice work

Lovely collection and painting, plenty of potential opposition for them as well.
-
Yep, as everyone has said, lovely work there. They sure look the business!
-
Thanks Everyone!
-
Very nice start !
Camo and colorful minis, exactly what I like.
I will keep an eye on this thread, sir.
-
I've finished the last of my insurgents (at least for now) and some journalists to use as objective markers.

Nice project and painting. What rules are you going to use?
-
Thanks! We're still trying to figure out a rule set. I've had the Bolt Action modern variant and Force on Force recommended by several people online; since my gaming group already plays a lot of BA WW2, we'll probably try that variant first and see how it goes. I'm also trying to meet up with someone to learn Spectre, so we'll see if that works at all (I've heard it's best for small actions with only a few figures per side rather than what we're planning).
Chris
-
Nicely done! :D
-
Good luck.
Have you seen this comparison? It might help, or just add more options. :D

I'm going to try Fistful of Lead for modern games at some point too.
-
Thanks Both!
-
Finally have something to play on:

The FFL boys look good.
Nice town, too. I'm sure it's quite peaceful, where noboby knows nuttin'! :D
-
Great work. These buildings look a bit like mars or StarWars, right?
-
Fine fellas for sure
-
Thanks All! The buildings seem to be based on west African designs, but I have seen some cool sci-fi conversions online.

My village needed a shopping area, so I've created one from some GameCraft MDF kits. I think this was one of the more entertaining builds for this project, and I had a lot of fun assembling it. Eureka's African market set will be coming for Christmas, so it will be growing a bit in the future. More pics are on the blog, along with with all the files for the signs if you'd like to use them on your own projects.

I like the shops and the umbrellas but those civilians are spectacular :-* :-*
-
Brilliant work!
-
That's excellent, great result, on all of it.
-
Wow that is really good :-*
-
Cool. I can just hear the haggling going on...although perhaps gunfire may ring out at any moment...
-
Thanks Everyone!

Love the market place. What rules are you using?

Thanks! We’re mostly using the Bolt Action modern variant for larger games, but have tried Spectre for small actions

I seem to be late for the party.
(Not the first time.) lol
A wonderful set of figures and buildings.
Really love your work. :-*
Your blog is great.
-
Well done on those Frenchies and Malians. They look great!
-
Thanks!

So impressive ,how do you like the rules?
-
So impressive ,how do you like the rules?
Thanks. So far I've only had one game of Spectre and one of Bolt Action Modern, so not enough to really make a final call on either. But I think they'll likley work well for small and large games, respectively. The only downside with BAM is that there is no point system to balance the armies and you'll need some house rules as well, so best to use for casual games rather than something competitive.
-
Really impressive project here. Inspirational.
-
Just found this thread,
Quite nice minis & buildings.
Thanks for sharing

Thanks!

That technical and those other fellas look the business. Well done...

So we finally had a chance to try out a big game using the Bolt Action modern variant from Jay's Wargaming Madness. It was a huge, chaotic, bloodbath, and we had a great time.

This look outstanding FUN.
Got my juices flowing.
You are doing great work, please keep it going.

Thanks!

Wow! Great battle report. Sounds like the French medic ought to get a medal!
-
I agree with Capn Jim on the medic deserving of a medal. Nice and bloody AAR.
-
Thanks again! Yeah, the medic was the star of my force.
This weekend I finished up the last of my Quartermaster 3D insurgents. They were designed for the Middle East, but I think they still look good for the Sahel.

Yes, this has grown much bigger than I originally planned. lol But I'm getting to the tail end of it. Just a little bit more infantry, a couple of technicals, and some motorbikes.
Chris
-
Lovely figures. Just lovely...
-
I swear, I am almost through with my insurgents. Just some technicals and motorcycle troops to go. Here's the latest batch of infantry from Miska Miniatures:

Love them.

Thanks!
-
Lovely-looking rocks you have there. Well done!
-
I echo the rock comments.
How did you make them?
-
Great looking project! I like how natural those rocks look, less of a "90s real time strategy game map"-feel.
-
I echo the rock comments.
How did you make them?
Thanks! These are actually 3D prints from Terrainify (you can buy STL files or hard copies). Just be aware the print layers are highly prominent, so a lot of sanding and filling is needed to smooth them out.

Great additions to your excellent collection.
I see what you mean about the heads looking a little smaller that the bodies. on your green guys.
I think on the tabletop they will look fine.
-
Love the bikers mate
-
I have been halted by the small heads myself.
Do the heads come separate or are the bodies in one piece? If they are separate they can be easily rescaled.

Thanks All!

I think if you buy the print file from Combat Octopus you get the heads separate , but I don't have a 3D printer and the people selling the physical copies were only offering them with the heads attached.

Yeah, those guys (and their bikes) all look good...

I've brought in a little more firepower for the French with a 1/50 ERC-90 Sagaie from JJG Print 3D

very nice, especially the camo net. Bought or home made?
-
Thanks! The netting was bought off of Amazon and is made by a company in China called Warp United (1/35 Type A Sand). Way overpriced for what you get, but I couldn’t find anything else local or with reasonable shipping rates.
-
I see what you mean. :o
-
Well, over-priced camo netting aside, that AC looks good!
