Title: Hat Guy's SOTR Armies
Post by: Hat Guy on March 23, 2014, 03:31:07 AM
I've been going through my Secrets of the Third Reich minis lately in preparation for a big game at Little Wars Melbourne 2014 (http://www.littlewarsmelbourne.com/) and I'm using the opportunity to take a look at my armies and see what I need to finish them off. For the most part, I plan to have all the Platoon and Support options for each Army so that I can play with any options I feel like. I thought I'd share my journey with you guys, as you've always reacted well to my SOTR stuff in the past. There'll be a mix of finished, half-painted and WIP minis, but I'll make sure to post up things as they get finished as well.

First up;

Latverians (Germans)

I'd wanted to do a Latverian Wargaming army for years when I started playing SOTR, I was working mainly on my British and I wanted an Axis army for them to fight, as Benny was doing Germans, I thought "Why not Latveria?" The idea was pretty straightforward, what if Doctor Doom had ruled Latveria during WWII? Naturally he would have joined on with the Axis powers in the hope of grabbing some greater holdings, but probably turned independent when Hitler started persecuting Gypsies (so I could play against other German armies). Latveria is small, so much of the equipment would be lend-lease or outmoded, but brought up-to-date by Doom's technological genius. Instead of Supernatural creatures, Doom would use Robots, giving me the opportunity to do some cool "counts as" units.

Doom (Heroclix) and my Command Squad (Wargames Factory with plenty of GW Bits). Doom is used as Hans the Hunter in games. The uniform of my Latverians is designed to reflect Doom's colours, but still be somewhat realistic. As the WF Shocktroopers don't have "traditional" [W]WWII weapons, I've done my best to make models WYSIWYG; this squad has a CO, a Medic, 2 Assault Rifles and an AT Rifle.

Infantry platoon, two squads of ten.

Squad 1; NCO, 2 Assault Rifles, AT Rifle and 6 Semi-Auto Rifles. As Latveria has a high Gypsy population, the soldiers not wearing helmets have traditional head scarves.

Squad 2, NCO, 2 Assault Rifles, AT Rifle and 7 Semi-Auto Rifles. Less conversions on this squad because I was in a hurry to get them done.

Platoon Support.

HMG Team. MG from At-43.

Sniper Team.

RPG Teams. The Latverians have had to "acquire" some equipment from the enemy.

Doombots (Dhrones) I have another 2 coming in the post so that I can do 2 Squads. All Doombot and Doom Clix.

Robots (Wolf Runners) Just finished these Copplestone Beauties, kept them simple so that they can see play in other games as well.

Latverian Medium Mechs (Scratch builds from Benny)

Drop Armour Squad with 2 Packed LMGs and 3 AT Rifles. Dust Tactics Grim Reapers.

More Drop Armour. Another box of Grim Reapers (I'm thinking the command box) and I can field the Drop Armour Army option.

I have some Horror Clix "Carnage Bots" coming to be my Robot "Jagerhunds" and I plan to get more Shocktroopers to build a Mortar Team and options for a Pioneer Squad, but I need to figure out the other options I'm missing.

Characters like Livewire, Wolfgang Faust and Frau Tear (also generic Vampires) are giving me some trouble as I can't figure out how they fit into the existing army. One option would be to use other Marvel Super Villains, but I just get the feeling that it would jar with the overall look of the army.

I have plenty of generic Zombies that I can throw in (we'll see them when I get to my Germans), but I have been considering a Zombie Reed Richards as a Latverian Pinger.

I still need to find:
A Blitzhund (something that ties with the Carnage Bots)
Light Mechs (I experimented with Hammer Drones, but they're too high-tech)
Aufklarer Squad (thinking cyborgs)
A Tiger/Heavy/Very heavy mech (I've been eyeing off the Star Wars Tank Droid, but I'm not sure how it will look in a Diesel-Punk setting)

Super fun idea - I like it a lot. I'd steal it but I doubt I'll ever have the time.

What about an axis Luther from Dust? You have the 2 smaller walkers, so perhaps a bigger one instead of a tiger?

Nice gas mask heads, where are they from?

Cheers
Matt

The Gas Mask Heads are just the normal Wargames Factory Shocktrooper ones. I'll consider the Luther, but there's already a couple floating around the club in German armies.

Great looking force you have there!

For a heavy walker not a luther, I would suggest a Konig Luther http://www.miniaturemarket.com/ffgdt026.html (http://www.miniaturemarket.com/ffgdt026.html) or an AT43 mecha. I like this one http://www.miniaturemarket.com/at-43-red-blok-odin-o-1-manon-o-2-hero-box.html (http://www.miniaturemarket.com/at-43-red-blok-odin-o-1-manon-o-2-hero-box.html)

I look forward to seeing your army in action.
Thanks

Next up:

USA

I was mostly inspired for this army by comics and movies, both classics and the pulps. As a result there's a mash-up of characters and less than historical uniforms.

Command Squad. Big Joe (Artizan), Sniper, Radio Operator, Medic and 3 SMGs (all Warlord with some West Wind heads).

Infantry Squad. SGT Kelly (Artizan), 2 BARs and 9 Semi-Auto Rifles (a mix of Warlord, West Wind and Eureka)

Infantry Squad Two. SGT, 2 SMGs, 1 BAR and 9 Semi-Auto Rifles (mostly Warlord with the odd West Wind head).

RPG Team (Eureka).

Chameleon Snipers (Warlord with GW Guns).

HMG Team (Warlord with West Wind heads).

Mortar Team (Warlord and West Wind).

SGT Fury (Wild Bill) and the Howling Commandos (Engineer Team). All Eureka except Pinkerton, who is Warlord.

WIP Crow Dogs (Warlord with Perry and West Wind heads) and Medicine Man (AE WWII). I've been a fan of voodoo since I visited New Orleans as a child and when I saw the AE WWII Witch Doctor, I got inspired. I still need a Wendigo, at the moment I'm thinking some kind of ghost in an African Mask; if I can find one.

Medium/Heavy Mech (Oddball from Artizan, Mech is Dust and turret is Tamyia).

Stewart (Heroclix) and Tesla-Sherman (Tamyia with Dust turret), the Mech and Sherman have magnetised turrets so that they can be swapped. Eventually I'll get around to painting the Flamethrower version.

My standard Sentinels of Freedom, Captain America (White Knight) and GI Robot (kitbash of Warlord, Wargames Factory and GW)

Other handy Wild Bill stand-ins; Bucky, The Blazing Skull, Lobster Johnson and Sandman (all Clix).

The Human Torch and Prince Namor (Clix). I love having these guys in the collection, but they never get much play as there are no existing rules that fit them. I'm considering using them as light mechs, but would probably need a third hero to do so.

Oddly, for the army I probably play the least, my Americans are the most complete; I'll pick up the Incursion APEs and Eureka Jet Pack Girls for my Jet Rangers. I also know what light mechs I'm getting, so all I really need is to find a nice Wendigo and a Teleforcefield gun.

Nice mix of figures there Hat Guy. :) I just finished the White Knight Captain America myself :D Heres a link for my coloured in Cap :D http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=57694.60 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=57694.60) hope you don't mind the cross promo ;)

I like your mixing and matching of Dust/Tamiya - it gives a comprehensive wierdness to the forces. I like the idea of the foreman in the factory.. "Quick, Bolt THAT on now." "But sir, that's for.." "Do it, its finished" "Yes sir"  ;D

Cheers
Matt

Looking great!

Did you have any problems with the warlord bodies and WW heads? I ask because I was thinking of making some allied zombies out of warlord bods and WW zed heads and was concerned about them not looking right scalewise.

They seem to fit ok metal to metal. WW metal heads on Bolt Action plastic bodies can look a bit off.

Hat Guy, if you're looking rules for the Invaders, you should take a look to our blog: http://freaklandscenics.blogspot.com.es/2012/01/los-invasores-i.html (http://freaklandscenics.blogspot.com.es/2012/01/los-invasores-i.html)

There are the four characters, and you can use as a base for make your own rules for your games. We've played with some of them only 2 or 3 times, but no doubt they're funny to play.

We've another weird wars ideas in the blog too, so I hope you like it. :D

WestWind heads on Bolt Action (plastic) bodies can look ok - as always, it's something of a matter of taste, here's a couple of WW Brit gasmask heads on BA plastic Brit infantry bodies (currently seeing service in Strange Aeons & Pulp Alley) - as ever, please excuse the terrible pic & crepuscular lighting.

After some delay, British!

The British/Commonwealth was the first army I started for SOTR as it was the only army that no one else wanted to play at the time. I have more than enough to field a standard British Infantry army and Para-Commandos at the same time, but I don't have too much Temple as I'm not overly fond of the army list.

Sir Herbert Shoggoth Smyth [Mr Smyth] from Fiendish Fabrications and two Flesh Golems, former Dungeons and Dragons miniatures.

As you can see, my British force is pretty extensive, there's not a great deal left to do. I need a Maxwell that fits in with the Doctor (I'm thinking a Cheeta-person), a Para Mortar Team and a Templar Squad or two. I've seen people use the Warzone plastics as Templars, but I prefer mine as MI-13, because they look good on the Incursion Board.

A week out from Little Wars, and I finally get the last army together; my Arnim Zola Germans.

I got inspired by the Captain America film and video game, as well as Ultimate Annual #2 and wanted to put together an elite force that had been "improved" by Zola under the auspices of Hydra. The army is made up primarily of Warlord, Games Workshop and Eureka parts kitbashed together.

That dust mech is huge!!! :o

Nice collection of Germans, that Zola should really try his experiments on rats before human subject's, but the sniper fellow certainly seems to see better ;)

Red skull is a good figure, and the collection is growing well. Please keep posting :)

Very nice additions, will be checking these out on Sunday.

And the "StuG" is actually a Sturmtiger, a true beast of WWII armour:

Did a big display/demo at Little Wars Melbourne on Sunday, borrowed minis from Benny and a couple of other clubmates to put this together:

Under a year, so technically not Threadomancy!

SOTR is gaining traction again, so I'm getting the last few units done for each army. That way, I can start on new units as soon as I get the new edition!

Latverian Mortar Team. Proved themselves 100% accurate and 100% deadly so far.

The mortar is very nice :-* :-*

Why is the commander wielding a cordless socket drill?  ;D

Needed them finished for this Saturday as we're playing a massive "Bridge too Far 1949" game. Keep an eye out of the photos next week.

Think I managed to get everything done for tomorrow. Vampire will provide air support for my British.

1/48 Kit of unknown origin. Not very accurate paintjob motivated by lack of time and handy paints.

Damn! I'm always seeing those 1/48 Vampires used in Weird War games, and after seeing yours painted like that, I really need to buy one  :o Great work.

That is one sexy airplane  ;D
I got the good fortune to see one up close and see it fly at an airshow. Really cool plane.

Thanks for the comments guys. The only problem is that the Vampire kind of locks me into building jets for my other factions as well... What a shame.  ;)

I went for a F-80 Shooting star for my Americans and this one for my Germans:

It's weird enough for my tastes and not the usual Me-262. What jets are you planning on using?  ???

I have a Horten Ho229A-1 in 1/48. A Gloster Meteor F-1, and a F-80 Shooting Star. There are some other 1/48 period jets I'd like to get. The Huckbien and Lippisch P13a (rare and expensive). A He 162A-2 Salamander and a Vampire Mk1. I know it isn't a jet, but I'm also thinking of getting an AD-6 Sky Raider for ground support. It would look awesome painted in dark blue flying over some weird war Marines!
