Painted Nightgaunt (not Byakhee!)
« on: July 22, 2007, 09:22:50 PM »
Hey everyone,

I found this forum through a friend of mine, and was happy to see a Call of Cthulhu board since I'm in the process of painting some RAFM CoC figs right now. I figured what's a better first post than showing off a miniature?

Keep in mind that I'm not an experienced painter. Not counting slopping colours onto GW figs to get a game going, I've been painting for about six months (I really only took it up in February, not counting my highschool days). As such, I'm still in the process of learning, so feedback is very appreciated!

Here's a front view of a Nightgaunt. I couldn't get the lighting right (I took the picture by a desk lamp), so sorry that he's fairly dark, but it's not too bad:

I can't seem to link the images inline, so I'll just give links...

Here's a side-view, so you can see the spines going down his back nicely:

Here's a back view:

And finally, just so you can see the details on his wings, here's a view with the contrast turned way up:

That's it for now, but I'm working on more, between other things.

And by the way, if you're interested, take a look at the rest of the Call of Cthulhu stuff I've done (although this is the only monster so far): http://www.javaop.com/~ron/ospap/show_category.php?category_id=48

Thanks! I think Henry is probably the best miniature I've ever painted. I only just finished him this morning, now I'm deciding who to do next. I'm thinking Wilbur, perhaps. :)

I like your stuff, very characterful :) Particularly the people, but the monster is great as well! I like the highlight work on the colours, as well as the composition. Looking forward to seeing Wilbur and his brother :)

I think the figures are coming along really well! I think the demon is very vivid in its coloring and I look forward to seeing what else you might be doing for the story (such as the watley house!!!)
great stuff

if you have any specific painting questions I am happy to help you out

That's an interesting one. I've never done terrain before, or anything similar, but that's a perfect place to start. I definitely want a home for the Dunwich stuff, and there's no time like the present to learn! :)

That's the spirit!  I can't remember what the house was like, it's been a long time since I read The Dunwich Horror.  Grab some foamcore and get to it!  Make sure to post the results here.   :)

I moved the book to the top of the pile, as soon as I have a chance I'm going to read the story again. It's been years since I did it as well.

Not to mention the barn where they keep Wilbur's brother. I've always wanted an excuse to paint a cow. :)

I'll definitely post the results!

I wonder if anybody manufactures a frightened-looking bovine....

I was thinking that, I could have sworn I'd gotten a Byakhee but it doesn't have a face which made me think it was a nightgaunt. Now I'm going to have to find my sales receipt and see if I'm crazy, or if the store lied to me! Personally, I vote I'm crazy.

Thanks for the correction. :)

Yeah, a Byakhee has a face, plus a big insect-like rear end.

I double-checked my receipt, and it does indeed say "Nightgaunt". I'm not really sure how "Byakhee" worked its way into my brain, but it never seemed to match with Lovecraft's description of a Byakhee so I was always confused.

I love how my paintjob matches the description of a nightgaunt pretty well, since they're supposed to be black/purple, and my GW blue turned out a little purpleish :)
