Post by: aircav on January 04, 2010, 10:57:30 AM
I received a HLBS Big Bertha for Christmas, i was suprised that it was not very accurate so i made some new bits to get it to look something like  :D

There's still some ladders to add & a couple more handles

I knew it from period pictures, but it occured to me only now which rather well known model reminds me of it pretty well

Lovely.

And just to clarify, you got this like 2 weeks ago, in which time it has been researched, modified, prepped, assembled, painted, based and photographed?  Wow, that's fast work!

EDIT

Oooh!  Just looked again and it's not been painted yet.  Doh!  Still a quick turnaround tho.

It has now been undercoated since these pictures were taken last week  :D

when closely examining this model and its real life prototype, it comes to mind how cheap the "model designers" at GW really are...

this one is truely detailed and a masterpiece in sculpting and casting (OK with custom improvement) and the pathetic GW copy even more expensive...

so sad...

Great model, Keith! As I have that monster on my workbench too, would you please provide a list of all the additions and corrections? That would be a great help when I start building my kit ...

 :)

basically anything that is white (plastic card or rod), dark metal (florists wire) or brass rod in the pictures has either been replaced or altered, in addition there should also be 2 ladders at the front near the legs, two ladders on each side one to the rear of the large foot plate and one on the small side peices to front foot plate.
there should also be a winding handle under the rear foot plate the full width with a handle on both sides and an L shaped handle on large disc at the rear.

there should also be 2 large plates under the front winding handle on top of the floor wheel support plates (which should really be a lot thicker).

Hope this helps, I found these details on the landships site:

totally missed this at the turn of the year, excellent stuff  :). I like all the added details they make a big difference.  Will this be ready in time for the day in march?  I not sure I'll be taking mine unless I manage to cobble some sort of crew together in time.

I don't know Andy as its come to a bit of a standstill on the painting front & it wouldn't have any crew either   :?

I've got a couple of Renegade EW German artillerymen painted up and am trying to paint up a couple more, all the poses from their 77mm crew are ok (ish) apart from the guy carrying the shell which is obviously about 5 times smaller than it should be  ;)  Being Early War with Pickelhaube their not really appropriate for late war (or even for early war as a crew with feldmutze would be preferable) but their better than nothing.

We'll have to talk Rob into doing some Scarab crew  :D

At home the Bertha lies in my drawer but I did an example assembly. Regarding the crew I rather thought of 25mm figures.

And Renegade tends to be 30mm high.

Scarab could do something there, thats right.
