After getting the Silent Invader thoroughly embarked on a Dorking project ( >:D ) it's about time I started a thread for my own version.
It's in VSF as I'm going to have the occasional bit of steam tech here and there. Nothing over the top, just enough to warrant it being in this board.
Troops will be mainly from the Perry BIF range. I'm not as fastidious as Steve regarding correct uniforms etc so all the figures for my collection will be vanilla :)
First off though is some terrain (isn't it always lol ).
I'll be doing a good selection of small houses/villas that will have separate plates representing gardens and just pavements as I should be able to use quite a few of them for Limehouse as well.

There will be lots of hedges and I've done a test and also started on production lining the rest although I think I'm going to need a lot more ::) lol

I've got two battalions already that are also seeing service in Japan :D
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/50/2619-170121121338-500421536.jpeg)
It's also going to be a good project to get a lot of generic terrain done, such as rivers, woodlands, marshes/bogs etc.
-
A fine start👍
-
A thoroughly splendid idea for a project and a great start :-*
-
Great work, sir!
-
Very nice building indeed.
-
It’s all looking fab! 8)
-
Brilliant as usual! Very realistic!
-
Many thanks chaps :)
Progress will be slow but steady :)
-
Good start, very nice work on the completed hedges :-*
-
Nice :-*
-
Thanks again :)
These hedges are going to take ages lol
I have got the bits for a river test which I shall hopefully get started today and if it works I can use the same process for the marshes/bogs.
-
Another eye candy thread....Love this photo

This will be worth following! Beautiful start, and I think we all anticipate the revelation of a complete table of throughly English suburbia being trampled beneath so many tiny, marching boots. :D
-
Lovely, just lovey James.
Look forward to seeing this develop further in time.
Cheers.
-
This is gonna be good...very good.
-
Cheers all :)
and I think we all anticipate the revelation of a complete table of throughly English suburbia being trampled beneath so many tiny, marching boots. :D
That will be one of the games, yes :D
I've got a little campaign noted down and will write it properly soon enough and post it here.
-
Lovely!
-
Thanks :)
Started on house number two. Fortunately, there are plenty of little Georgian villas dotted around our local area that are perfect for inspiration. Doing the enclosures for gardens will be a bit more difficult although I've got a book or two on the subject which will hopefully help.

-
You’re racing away! 8)
Are the windows card or acrylic?
-
Card for this :)
-
River sample is done and I think it works well enough to start making proper ones.
The proper ones will have yacht varnish on them but they'll have to dry out in the garage as I'm not allowed stuff like that in the house :D

-
Very nice James.
-
The river section looks great.
-
That’s beautiful, looks very natural to me.
-
Great idea to use clear acrylic for the surface of the water. Looks excellent 8)
-
Many thanks all :)
-
looking good- is this inspired by the "invasion literature" of the Victorian and Edwardian era
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Battle_of_Dorking
-
Cheer mate :)
It certainly is but I’ll be going a little bit further most likely.
-
Excellent work, all looking great! :-*
-
Will there be some cool Victorian Sci- Fo touches like a submersible craft or steam powered vehciles?
-
But of course :D
-
So, still on the generic scenery for now and the tree base test is done. Drawing just needs a little tweak and then I can cut several out. It’s two layers of mdf stuck together with a chamfered edge. Not an original idea of course but one that I’m happiest with to get what I want for the table top.
Also thinking it could be used for fantasy with large mushrooms on the bases or crystal rocks etc.

-
Excellent stuff. Is this for your own use or something you'd consider being available in the webstore?
-
Very pretty Terrain for the English to die upon .....
;) :D
-
Thanks chaps :)
Is this for your own use or something you'd consider being available in the webstore?
Own use, I’m not able to have lots of lasered mdf lying around.
-
Lovely work James. Quite realistic terrain you have made.
-
Just caught up with this, cracking job :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Where are your trees from?
-
Thanks both :)
Trees are from EMA (Engineering Model Associates). I needed a few other things from there so got them at the same time.
All the rivers are cut and I’ve got five or six tree bases cut as well but I’ve been a bit too busy recently to get anything more done on them. Hopefully this’ll change after next week :)
-
Forgot to add the tree bases that were completed earlier.

Also got house № two completed. Next will be a steam engine and trailer for transporting the troops to where they might be needed.

I love the different aspects of the structure- wonderful work.
-
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Lovely job on those :-*
-
That is a splendid and very useful house James :-*
-
Those are very cool. Great looking house, but I particularly like the way you have done your woods sections, neat idea and they look fantastic.
-
I really like the weathering on the house very natural :-* :-* :-*
I am always jealous of the trees you have, I am sure if I ask it will be some structural model making company and they cost a fortune
-
Many thanks chaps :)
I am always jealous of the trees you have, I am sure if I ask it will be some structural model making company and they cost a fortune
EMA for the deciduous trees and for the pines I tend to shop around and get a few decent ones a month. It does add up but they look better then the standard bogbrush trees :)
-
Excellent work on the trees and the house. :-* :-*
-
So, can we expect that you are going to do the cellars as well? :D
-
Cheers :)
So, can we expect that you are going to do the cellars as well? :D
lol No chance lol
I have started on the steam engine though :)
-
And finished it :)
I’ll have to do a few of the wagons at some point and probably a field artillery piece. And maybe some flatbed wagons for supplies etc…
Gonna need a bigger table lol

Completed a tunnel entrance for the planned railway (signal box objective is just about done as well along with plenty of ‘track’) and will do some fairly steep hills to go with it. Should make for a nice table backdrop :)

Very nicely done. ;D
-
Top job again James, loving the smoke stain on the tunnel brickwork, great little detail :-*
-
Not bad at all :D
The brickwork is especially fab but of course the growies make it pop

Thanks chaps :)

Brilliant terrain as always mate!

Cheers :)

Beautiful work James.

Lovely work

Ooh,I do like that,smashing :-*
-
Many thanks :)
-
Absolutely brilliant! Masterful design and superb brushwork! This whole thread is awesome! (I ran out of superlatives so I had to resort to awesome!)
-
Lovely work across the board, some serious eye candy.
I do like that coal wagon 👍🏻
Cheers
Ry

Cheers :)
I’ll take photos of the signal box tomorrow.
-
Looking forward to the rest of the photos
-
Great looking terrainpiece, always love the details you put in
-
That’s fantastic

Excellent work. :-*
-
Thanks again :)
Signal box and a level crossing have been finished off, should prove a useful objective >:D
The fence was entirely scratchbuilt from strip styrene, because I'm an idiot lol

That might be the lighting as the only thing that's black is the back panel.

Stunningly good

Spectacular! :-*
-
Thanks :)
-
Superb! Wonderful work! :-*
-
Love it :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Lovely work but it does suggest that the theory that wargaming is just a gateway drug may be true.
Fight the urge to stand on railway platforms and record serial numbers. Resist the urge to look again at Rod Stewart’s back catalogue just cos he's a model railway nut and most important of all don’t give in to making those ‘chuff-chuff, choo-choo’ noises. :D
-
Time for an overdue update :)
Been messing around with some figure choices and have got some artillery crew and the colours sorted for a civilian regiment.
One of the games we'll eventually play will be shore landings and I've got the intention to build a Martello tower that is undermanned but would get some reinforments during the game and for that I've done some artillery crew. I'll probably do enough for two units of six (playing the same rules as SI). These are Perry ACW arty crew with some small conversion work. Some will be armed and others will not.
Then the first, of possibly, several civvie units. The weren't officially allowed flags on parade but apparently some were given them by family etc. so I'll do a simple, plain flag with something like 'Forward Our Brave Boys' or some such. They're Perry Canadians from the BIF range
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/55/2619-240422094830-551331583.jpeg)
And then there's more terrain, because I can't help myself lol
It's one of the existing builds with an added set of gardens. I'll be doing similar with the other houses I have and fortunately they are still quite common hereabouts. The garden is extrapolation from some limited research I did a while back.

I think I should copy that signal box. There is an idea in the back of my head for a very long time now to build some typical buildings that will make any bypassers immediately recognize where in the world my gaming table is set up. Railway buildings are perfect for that! A signal box like that and a few terraced houses will dress my table rather British, I guess... :D

Good reference source if you want to make your signal box a bit more time/ location specific.

Primed acrylic :)

Primed acrylic ;)
Alright, I'll contact you for pickup next time I'll cross the channel with the van… :D

Looking like a cracking game in the making

what a wonderful build going on - my first job was in Dorking :)

Bangtidy!

Thanks for sharing,
by the way just noticed that Northstar Miniatures will be doing some kind of The Battle of Dorking promo might be of interest.

Thanks again :)

Was meaning a promo deal on miniatures not a demo game.
-
Finally got some more figures complete for this (along with some terrain). The 2nd Surrey Royals Volunteer Regiment. The banner says 'Forward Our Boys' just in case you can't make it out. I'll do another 12 of these but 12 at a time is the most I can face to paint in one go now. I prefer sixes.
I've also added gardens to the houses to add a potential bit of tactical play. I'll be adding some row cottages soon, most likely in brick and I do have it in mind to do an estate lodge, but that would be a corner piece.

Sorry, I misunderstood :)
-
Stunning. The houses are excellent, but the addition of the gardens makes them look even more realistic…that vegetable patch needs weeding though ;)
-
As the saying goes "I don't come here often". These are just brilliant, lovely looking buildings but as has been said, the gardens take them to a new level.
I've just read the whole thread,.....well looked at the pictures. :o did you ever finish the river sections, the trial one looked really good, something I'd like to emulate, or at least copy. ;)
Cheers
-
Proper eye candy James 8)

They’re going to die. :D
Steamrolled beneath the Prussian War Machine :o

Thanks chaps :)

Nah, the owner is getting on and no-one will come round and tidy it up ;)

No, but they aren't far off. I'll certainly post them when they're ready :)
Steamrolled beneath the Prussian War Machine :o
No VSF tech for you ;D
-
Very characterful gardening! Gardens really set off a model I think and add a sense of realism to the table. Too many houses usually get plonked in the middle of a field with no rhyme or reason……these are great!
-
Brilliant work as always mate.

Cracking stuff 8) 8) 8)

Great home and Volunteers.

Nice work all around James! :-*

They're excellent, the sort of thing that railway modellers would lose their shit it, and they like detail!
-
Thanks again :)
Got some regular artillery primed today and hope to get them done over the weekend.
-
That is a very pleasant looking neighbourhood. :D
-
Excellent stuff old chum.
Those Surrey gardens juxtaposed against the battlefield will look great.
Any thoughts on putting together a London Defence Scheme fort?
-
Thanks :)
Any thoughts on putting together a London Defence Scheme fort?
Yes, was up round the Box Hill fort a few weeks ago and will probably do something similar but on a more compact scale. I've started a couple of bunker style magazines that will be on separate bases and I think I'll do a row of cottages as well to go with it but they can be used separately as normal workers cottages (top left in the below image).
-
Look forward to seeing that.
I can see where you're coming from with making it compact. I'm thinking it'll dominate the battlefield otherwise.
I used to visit Box Hill Fort quite frequently and thought about building it. 20 years on you'll beat me to it lol
-
Dunno, I haven’t started it yet lol
-
Beautiful stuff Jim. :-*
-
Will you be building the fort into a hill /escarpment?
-
Cheers :)
Will you be building the fort into a hill /escarpment?
No, I don’t think so. It’ll have earthen embankments up against the walls etc but will sit flat on the table so it can be used for coastal games as well. I will have to do some hills for it to sit on though :?
I did finish off a small gun though :)
-
Nice job on that gun and crew, like the sabot basing too!😎
-
Ka-BOOM!
-
are the artillery sabots commercially available?
-
Thanks :)
are the artillery sabots commercially available?
Not really as so many people base their artillery differently (and have differing numbers of crew) but I’m certainly happy to do some custom ones.
-
are the artillery sabots commercially available?
James has put together some custom artillery bases for me, well worth it.
-
Liking the artillery very much. :)
-
Thanks :)
Some green coated volunteers for the next figures I think.
-
Very nice 8) 8)
-
Cheers Keith :)
Having a game with SI and Captain Blood on Monday and I got these chaps ready for their first blooding >:D
The Guildford Cricketeers!
I've also textured the sabot trays and will probably do the same for the rest of the figures as I like how they've turned out.

Well done, they look great.

Love the flag!
Yep! 8)

Thanks chaps :)

They look terrific.
Maybe the second battalion has (cricket) white uniforms? Or is that the parade No1 Dress?
-
Really lovely work Jimbo, I love the green coats and the excellent cricket bat!
-
Cheers fellas :)
Maybe the second battalion has (cricket) white uniforms? Or is that the parade No1 Dress?
Parade dress only I'm afraid :D
-
Nice yellow pom poms.
Shame they didn’t last long ;)
-
Blah blah blah lol
-
Nice work on the Cricketers.
One question about the facing, with the exception of the South Essex, I remember yellow being for Scottish regiments ^__^.
-
I haven't really done any research for these like Steve has, I've just picked colours and combinations that 'feel' right :D
-
Nice work on the Cricketers.
One question about the facing, with the exception of the South Essex, I remember yellow being for Scottish regiments ^__^.
The Rifle Volunteers, especially when they started forming in the 1850s, had to buy their own uniforms and it was pretty much the case of ‘anything goes’. By the 1890s their uniform was more uniform in appearance, both across volunteer units and relative to the regular army. In earlier times, a lot dressed themselves like European light infantry, with the kepi being worn by some. Officially they weren’t allowed unit colours, but some are known to have adopted unofficial flags of their own design.
The above gives an idea of something of the range of outfits. It’s worth bearing in mind that some local units (or Corps, as they were known) had a large number of wealthy members (such as the Inns of Court lawyers) while others were small and poor, perhaps comprising a group of factory employees or farm workers, which perhaps dictated how much might be spent on the uniform. One thing they were not is ‘The British Army’ and so in creating a fictitious unit, a Corps made up of pals from a cricket club with yellow facings is entirely feasible. :)
-
Interesting cut of uniforms. :D

We have a game tomorrow so I needed to get some more rails done and I got a little depot finished off as well for an objective.

There's just over five and half foot now (including the tunnel entrance on pg 4)
I might do some curved track but given that rail curves are very long I don't think it matters too much on a 4x4 or a 6x4. Points might make an appearance though.

Excellent, it’s going to be a spectacular table. :-*

Lovely work on the train tracks and associated buildings Jimbo, it's going to be a fantastic board!
-
Ooh!
Very nicely done 👍

That's a genuinely marvellous little layout. :-* :-*
Is the signal box scratch built or is that the Peco O gauge model?
-
Love it James!! :-*

Thanks chaps :)

Being a railway nut, I'm totally excited to see these on a gaming table/AAR! :-* :-* :-*

Fortunately, Harry ‘Flash’ Bang-Whallop is there on the scene to record the days disastrous events :D

Marvellous work me 'ol mucker. :-*
Am I right in thinking the fighting around the railway yard in the book is in the Surbiton/Kingston area?
-
If I remember correctly it's towards the end of the book and it's Surbiton station where the 'hero' finds himself. I'm fairly sure I know which villa he hides in as well as I used to get the bus past it lol
It's a lovely little double gable front. Early Georgian by the look of it and ripe for a model making of it :D

Following, so keep em coming. :)
Lovely stuff. :-*
