Title: BSC2019 von Lucky Deep Sleep
Post by: von Lucky on January 02, 2019, 01:33:06 PM
Only starting to get ideas for now.

One of my slow-burn projects is set in Simon Stålenhag's world, so something that uses both definitions on "vegetation", to reflect something like this:

Would be cool - I have to think if it can be done with the confines of this contest though!

Heavily overgrown with weeds, sure why not?

Thanks - we'll see.

Hammers - I thought that tattered clothing was vines (there's other illustrations of plant covered robots).

Right, start time has passed!

I'm probably thinking something very similar to this pose:

Complete with the bottom half of the right leg missing (I know it's the angle). The left arm might be resting on the knee. However, as the model needs to be self supporting (i.e. I don't want a wall or similar for it to lean against), it probably needs both hands on the ground.

A lesson from last year, I also need to think of the storage solution. So I'm looking for options first to give myself some constraints on its overall size.

I'll probably buy a cheap doll from the dollar store to give me the head (I'll sculpt the open jaw, teeth, etc) and help with the proportions of the torso and the limbs.

Plant wise I'll use:
- clumps of teddy bear fur
- dried tea and leaves
- sticks and twigs
- dyed sawdust
- static grass

I'll probably use some small tufts with flowers as I'll have a bit of space in the 25% commercial limit to make my creation not look like an arts and crafts project. lol

I also realise I have subconsciously been influenced by Nicklas P's thread from a few weeks ago:

Aaaaaannnnnnndddddddd who would've thought that a doll would be anatomically correct? lol

There's Barbie dolls available at Big W (it's like Walmart in the USA) for $5, so I that's my backup if I can't find something better in the next week or so. I can use the head and sculpt over that and use the hands. The limbs too could potentially be augmented with wires/tubes - but they will have to be shortened.

I did buy some nice brown florists wire for my vines (and the cabling out of the back of the head), that I'll cover with paper leaves.

How about a cheap artists dolly ?
Title: Re: BSC2019 von Lucky Deep Sleep

Thought about it - will help with the proportions, but the doll will give me a better head to work off.

How about a cheap artists dolly ?

I would go with that. Or one of these plastic multipose, replaceable limb artists maquettes which I ae had my eyes on for quite some time now...

But then you would probably have to dress it up in a whole fucking lot of foliage for me to not disqualify you for transgressing the 25% rule. ;)

That looks neat.

Current plan is to use a doll head with Green Stuff over part of it and the hands, the rest of the body will be scratch built out of plastic and card. I have put the call out for an old doll, so let's see what I can recycle.

Simon Stålenhag's world
Would be cool - I have to think if it can be done with the confines of this contest though!

That man has an extraordinary talent for telling stories through a single pictures. His idea of depicting a future set in the 1970s to 80s Sweden and US is unique.

Finally (some) progress! I got hold of a second-hand Barbie from a fellow wargamer (thanks James) to use as the basis of the deep sleeping robot.

After some time pulling all that hair out (I got a blister by using pliers!) and some chopping up of the limbs, I think I have a good basis for the model.

I cut out the mouth to see what it looks like - the rubber material is softer than I thought, but nothing that a bit of plasticard and Milliput won't give more rigidity. Yes, it looks creepy to me too.

During the week I plan to glue her together, and start adding bits of plastic and card (pistons, battery packs, etc) to transform her. I'll have to buy some Milliput as I haven't used any for years. I think I can make the deadline still.

Thanks guys. The photo is looking a little too sexual - hoping once it's painted in dark colours/rust and covered in vines it would be so bad. I might have to cut the torso in half to bend the body forward.

Edit:what about using guitar wire and solder for the drooping wires of the robot?

Didn't have any (was just going to use normal wire) and so I went to guitar shops today. Was a little taken back by them being AU$30 for a steel strings for the bass guitar set?

Then I checked eBay - they're AU$5 delivered from Hong Kong. Okay, that seems more reasonable. lol

Also got some replacement Milliput, so I can start to do some sculpting.

Thanks guys - The boobs will also be covered to look more like a breastplate.

Question on the 25% limit - does a Barbie count for any of that limit? Noting that I'm going to cover about 50% with Milliput?

Edit: I also hope I don't go crazy like the guy from Kingdom Death...

No worries. I am sure this will look nothing like a barbie when you are done.

Those perforations in the head are pretty cool. Are you going to make use of them or cover them up?

What about keeping the kinda sexy part of? Why not do either a kinda broken down Metropolis robot or some sort of ruined cyberpunk style robot?

I’ve found these images with a quick search on Coolminiornot.com...

Cool, thanks.

Hammers:
I was going to cover them up, and have a few wires coming out the top and drooping on her back.

Painting-wise I was going to go with black/dark grey and rust, covered with greenery. However, I am thinking of painting her like one of these things:

Andy M:
Giving me ideas. The vegetation aspect could reflect Emily Browning in 2011's 'Sleeping Beauty'... but I think the grubby bright colours is more where I want to go. Peeling skin? That I want to try.

I'm also reminded of J. F. Sebastian's toys in 'Blade Runner' - so I'm going to take some inspiration from there too.
Title: Re: BSC2019 von Lucky Deep Sleep

Its true that the theme is vegetation, you need a substantial amount of it covering her.
Title: Re: BSC2019 von Lucky Deep Sleep
Post by: von Lucky on January 21, 2019, 01:13:36 PM
Ah, but I'm using the other definition of vegetation/vegetate:

vegetation
noun

1. plants considered collectively, especially those found in a particular area or habitat.
"the chalk cliffs are mainly sheer with little vegetation"

2. the action or process of vegetating.

vegetate
verb
gerund or present participle: vegetating

1. live or spend a period of time in a dull, inactive, unchallenging way.
"if she left him alone, he'd sit in front of the television and vegetate"
synonyms:   do nothing, idle, be inactive, languish, laze (around/about), lounge (around/about), loll (around/about), loaf (around/about), slouch (around/about)

(Hence why she's "sleeping".)
Title: Re: BSC2019 von Lucky Deep Sleep
Post by: Hammers on January 21, 2019, 01:55:40 PM
I better quote the theme rules to you then, which in my eyes are quite clear:

Quote
Vegetation should be interpreted as including all sorts of organic plant growth, be it trees, hedges, grass and flowers. Different sorts of fungi and corrals will be accepted as wel

I imagined you would reinterpret the original picture to be a robot in sleep stat as overgrown with weeds.
Title: Re: BSC2019 von Lucky Deep Sleep

Yes, chopping at the torso is a good idea I think.
Title: Re: BSC2019 von Lucky Deep Sleep
Post by: von Lucky on January 21, 2019, 08:49:31 PM
Hammers - yes, there will be greenery! (As someone who deals with legislation I read "should" and "must" as two different things ;)).

beefcake - I have glued it together, as chopping up will require a fair bit of work and I was able to angle it forward by repositioning the left leg. The next one maybe.

Title: Re: BSC2019 von Lucky Deep Sleep

Thanks.

Last week I also repositioned her so the pose is way less sexual and look a lot more relaxed/sleeping. I then covered parts in Milliput to bulk out the shape and give it a more of an android form:

Looks wise I still want the peeling of "skin", as in the original artwork that inspired the build and this piece that is haunting:

To achieve this look I started covering parts in small (1-2cm²) pieces in toilet paper, and then squeezing supaglue over it. I've only done the head, but it has done wonders in giving a whole lot of rigidity to the soft plastic of the head (the rest of a Barbie is made of a lot harder plastic). I'll post pictures of this step in the next few days once I've done a little more (including the jaw/mouth).

Title: Re: BSC2019 von Lucky Deep Sleep
Post by: von Lucky on January 31, 2019, 12:56:29 PM
Thanks guys - but I've hardly done anything compared to others already (and what the two of you regularly create...). But here's a small update.

As stated, I've glued toilet tissue paper to the head (and tested it on a leg). Here's what it looks like.

I like the look it achieves, but I'll need to start gluing from the bottom body part and then move to the top to achieve the right look with the overlapping. I think (hoping?) it's going to paint up really well. The current plan is dark greys for the body, with the face and/or head like the cat mascot I posted previously. I still don't know if I should paint over the eyes or leave them (with a black Blade Runner style eyeliner).

I have also made the knee joints - they will be the only "internal" parts showing, as one leg has been ripped off and will also have the guitar string wires in a mess spilling out from both parts.

They were made by cutting up the tube you get with a roll of dog toilet bags, adding a circular cap to each end by gluing a larger rectangular plastic sheet and then trimming it to size. The final step was to use a simple hole punch to create the joint cap. This will be easier to see when painted (as the plastic is semi-clear).

Finally I'm needing help with the back outlet ports. They're just the lids from soy sauce fish shaped bottles you get with sushi takeaway (https://www.techly.com.au/2016/08/12/techly-explains-whats-deal-little-soy-sauce-fish-comes-takeaway-sushi/) that may or may not be available in your part of the world. I've never used them before, but while having some sushi the other day I realised the lids would be useful for this build. They will have guitar string wires attached to the end and I don't know if they should be lined up horizontally or vertically.

Which do you prefer?

I think I prefer the horizontal too. It makes me think you could use jump starter cables on her. Just don't put them on the front.

What about four of them? Set them in a kinda wonky square? The two at the top wider than the two at the bottom? Maybe drill them out and make them perforated exhausts?
Title: Re: BSC2019 von Lucky Deep Sleep
Post by: von Lucky on February 02, 2019, 03:38:55 AM
All good ideas, thanks guys. I think two at the top right shoulder horizontal (as maybe exhausts with/without lids) and one with a cable somewhere above the hips.

I have spread plasters on the base, once that dries (shouldn't take long as we experience our summer vortex here) I'll start on the skin that will take some time.
