I just figured out the basic difference between Teutonic Efficiency and The Proper Efficiency of an English Gentleman
Steve Dean:
The Professor:
-
Oh my god! The latter must be "The Workbench to end all Workbenches!" :o
Now that sets a benchmark that will be hard to beat!
-
Yup - been envious of the Prof.'s workplace ever since I saw the pics of it for the first time.
If I (and my family) ever get a house of our own, I'll try to copy that setup. Maybe then I can be just a little efficient, too...
-
Teutonic Efficiency means not being able to conceive of the idea of a messy desk.
-
I find that it isn't mentally healthy to make such comparisons. Otherwise, we would all play with pre-painted by the Prof. Wait a minute! That's not a bad idea! I'll take 2 Pirate crews, a host of Gladiators, a 3500 point GW Goblin army, and the whole range of Superfigs. And the free-shipping is much appreciated. I'll have them by next Tuesday, then? Great!
-
lol
hopefully, you never seen my workbench. It illustrates well the french "bordel"

Oh my God! I fell of my chair reading this! I did not know self depreciation was in the French humor arsenal.
-

Considering the meaning that word has gotten everywhere else, I'm suddenly very interested in seeing your workbench. Lot's of "Gentlemen's Collectibles" minis, then?
Seeing the Prof's workbench actually makes me feel a bit better about myself. Makes it overwhelmingly obvious that I'm nowhere near the same league, which takes some of the pressure off.
-
Is it my imagination or is the British bench edged with beer-bottle tops ?
-
Maybe they were being used as replacement lids for the older Citadel paints in the picture? Or remnants of experiments in flow improver?
-
Those guys are both way to concerned about order for my tastes :D Honestly though, I am envious of the prof's workspace! I may have to trash my computers and rebuild my desk :)

Neldoreth - Now thats how a proper workbench should look. None of this Teutonic efficiency thing going on, lots of organised chaos instead
-
A question for the Prog:
Doesn't that lamp in the middle of the workdesk (the right one from those two illuminating), well doesn't that lamp disturb or bother you ??
I know it would highly irritate me, being right in the middle of the desk. I have two lamps being at the very edges of my desk (left and right) illuminating. Now if I would use a third lamp (and I am carefully thinking about that right now) I think I would fasten it opposite from me so the shaft wouldn't impede my movements.
Or am I totally wrong here?
-
Hey all...
After seeing pics of the Prof's workdesk and being inspired, I decided to rework my painting area... I built some shelves for all my paints and took my old computers and recycled them. Now, my desk is almost done and is much more spiffy looking and tidy:
Yes, that is all the paint I have.... believe it or not ;) So, until I get some more, the whole right side of the desk is dedicated to my WIP figs! And yeah, that is all of my WIP figs (but not my unpainted/unopened figs). I will post pics of the whole desk when it is together!
n.
-
Me, I pushed my computer back, put down a piece of foamboard, and put everything else where it fit :). Originally, I used my kitchen table, but I think that making my guests eat on the couch since the table was full of paints was a little improper, so I moved it all to my computer desk recently:
The paint and all my tools fit nicely into a drawer, too:
Note that I haven't really had time to get it messy yet. I'm working on it! It's totally makeshift, but in a small apartment it's nice to have a desk used for two things. :)
-
That is a nice tidy desk! Very cool! Having a drawer that isn't clogged with bits and bobs saved for vague future projects is quite novel for me! Soon though, you will be like me and just get rid of all the computer stuff altogether and replace it with miniature painting stuff ;)
So, am I correct in assuming that the mangled black spider-like monster on the foam board there is Wilbur's brother? Looking forward to seeing that painted! Thanks for posting your workspace! Everyone else should post their workspaces as well!

Haha!
So, am I correct in assuming that the mangled black spider-like monster on the foam board there is Wilbur's brother?
-
Neldoreth - that's a damned neat bench sir!
My workbench is my window sill! I find that painting in daylight is the only way I get the results I want. I've tried daylight bulbs etc, but find there's no substitute for daylight. Unfortunately, this means I don't get to paint as often as I would like. So I go for quality over quantity!
Although I don't have a workbench as such, I do have a dedicated wargames room - howzat! (I know - it's boastful, but when I was a kid wargaming, I always swore I'd get myself a dedicated room one day, so when we moved house a few years ago, I had a ruddy great brick built double garage block constructed - mainly so I could put a games room above it! It took some explaining to the wife, I can tell you. )
-
I have just springcleaned it - wonder how messy it will get with the passing of seasons....
-
I would like to see you taking a vow not to clean it till next year's end. Then send us a before/after shot.
-
I would like to see you taking a vow not to clean it till next year's end. Then send us a before/after shot.
I don't need to do that - I usually only clean it up at the end of the year
When I think of the grand and NEAT workspace Prof had showed us in the cat pic.... 8)
-
:)
what a coincidence! I've also cleaned my workspace this new years day!
-
Me too but it will be a matter of days before it returns to it's "messy" state again  . I think it's impossible to keep your workspace clean because most times you can't continue on one project due to several reasons and then you take something new and new and so on.
But I don't mind the mess at all, I don't have a problem finding stuff in it and when I need room I just push something aside
-
I tidy mine up on Fridays.
-
By the way - the sprue sticking out on the left hand side is not mine, but is part of the wife's 'Cutty Sark' WIP. Ah well, slight disclaimer...
-
Here is the reason I get so little painting done of late...........
The total chaos is indicative of my life at the moment.....family of four and a neurotic wife (shhhh, don't tell her). New Year, new priorities. In theory the hobby box/room is becoming my young son's bedroom and I am moving 30 years of lead addiction into the attic bedroom..........watch this space!
Happy New Year!

Having seen other people work spaces I thought I might show my office.. The first picture is the door to it.
And this is the actual office as its called in my house.
Its no good for large models but my seat fits under the counter and I have internet access as well!!#
:)
-
I've heard about some gamers being "in the closet" about their hobby, but isn't that taking it too far?
-
Reminds me of the inside of a sub, not one inch of space is wasted!
-
And I thought I had a small one :)
-
Ouch! Do you also have a scar on your forehead?
-
It's still bigger than my grannies bedroom, or Thunderbird 6 as i tell her it's called
-
I store the stool under the counter and I have my laptop on the top shelf. Models live in various places but some arre in the chest of draws under on the right. I have to work elsewhere when I work on anything big but it serves me well enough although I would prefer a better seat. Hardest is people wanting to get past the door which has to stay open but people ask nicely and warn me that they are coming...
I spray undercoat in the back garden and might move out to the shed for the summer.
-
OMG, I thought that looks ok, whats everyone going on about it being so tiny. I can even see the orange stool in the background. On double checking the orange stool turned out to be the top of a jar and then it dawned on me how small it was. LMAO. :D  :D
-
At least your office looks like a warm and cosy place...
My workbench is situated in my garage. It is perfectly o.k. in summer, but in winter it will freeze your butt right to the chair. It looks a bit messy as I'm trying to catch some mice. Everytime I try to detail (reads: lock in) our tom cat for this mission, I have to search for more annoying things than mice afterwards... :o :x
-
very very nice!
-
If you were lucky enough to grow up with parents or grandparents who lived through the Great Depression, you start to pick up on some of their habits regrading waste. My grandmother was a pack rat and I became a pack rat. Anything that could be reused... was.
So, for the longest time, my painting and sculpting table used shelving from an old desk that I had thrown out years ago. This is what it looked like:
I've been in a cleaning and organizing mood lately and seeing the desk just reminded me that I needed to do something with it. I went out and bought some cheap would (1" x 12" x 6') and in about 2 hours one night after work, I whipped this together.
I still need one more shelf to add to the center and I want to get some more plastic drawers for things, but at least for now, it looks nice and organized. We'll see what happens after the next project gets started.
-
Aha! A look into the secret lair of Operator 5! The new version looks like a great improvement.
That's similar to my set-up. I have a substantial old desk with sets of 3 large drawers down each side, a long central drawer above the seating space and a nice big surface area, which I got free from a local business that was closing down.
My marvellous wife also bought me some Ikea drawer units to put my paints in.
Why spend money on such stuff, when it is all needed for figures and rules etc :)
-
Scrounge and re-use. That's the ticket!
Construction nicely done too.
-
It looks great. If you added a plywood or pegboard backing it would add a lot of strength and give you the option to hang tools and stuff up.
-
I think I may be a bit strange. o_o
I like to look at other peoples working areas to see what they are up to.
Operator No 5 seem to have a few nice looking WIP's around his desk.
I like the paint pot stand, where did you get it?
-
lol
Rich - I can't see the difference... You seem to have all the same components - just in slightly different places! (Or am I missing something?)
But it does look tidier, I'll give you that. ;)
(A sight tidier than my painting window sill, that's for sure!)
I think I may be a bit strange. o_o
We're all a bit strange, or we wouldn't be here! :)
-
Operator No 5 seem to have a few nice looking WIP's around his desk.
There are a few things going on there but you can't see anything well enough to know what they are. :D
I like the paint pot stand, where did you get it?
I use craft paints for all my painting, this is a wire spinner that the craft store sells and I picked up with a 40% off coupon.
And Yes Captain Blood, all the stuff is still there. I still can't throw anything out. lol
The size of the shelving and the added shelving just organizes things better. I'll do another shot once the drawers are added.
-
I also love to see other people's workbench! Operator 5 I laughed when I noticed that you have a clock on your workbench... I do too! :-* I had to do that or I lose track of time and don't get the chores all done! lol
-
Here's what I have to put up with. Horrible, isn't it! :D I've also got a clock (the curve-topped thing beside the glue bottle, far left, first pic). In my case, it's because I can't wear a watch, literally. They always die on me but are fine if I keep them in my pocket! :? This is my workroom, the neat part. Trust me, you don't want to see the messy part! There are storage cupboards full of models and minis under all the bookcases, as well. It's tea in the cup, of course! The plaque hanging on the cupboard door (more models!) is the family crest - Azure, a lion rampant, or.

Good God sir!
Is that really lead in all those drawers?
Most retailers don't have that much stock!
Hells Bells! That is a lead mountain and a half - a veritable Everest. Makes me feel quite good about only having 300 or so figures remaining in my lead hillock.
I get on with it if I were you! lol
-
Archangel
great set up. :-*
How about the rest of us have a competition to guess how many different projects archangel in working on at the moment.
I can see :
Pulp figures, GW terminators, Wild west, WW II, Warhammer building and a model T(for a certain competition?)

Mostly GW, Foundry and Ral Partha in those drawers. Got some more cabinets and boxes stuffed elsewhere. Amazing what you can collect in 40-odd years, isn't it! :D

Nice work on that Model T camper shell. :) I gotta get started on mine.

Actually, that's just the stock ambulance kit. ;) Haven't received my Company B chassis' yet. Figured I'd use this one in the meantime to see what I have to work with.
-
So are we all gonna show the world our setups or something? I guess I'll take some pictures of my mess later when I return home.
Wow, archangel1, that's a lot of lead! Miniatures for the less fortunate who live in Canada? ;D

Are you ever going to paint it all, or even assembel it?! Is it your retirement project?
Looking at the pictures I actually thought you WERE a retailer....

That's only 25/28mm stuff! Doesn't include the 40-200mm figs!

I'm darn jealous with your place in Germany by the way. So much space...so organized. Terrific.

Germany looks a bit better! ;)
Is there any end in sight to your Russian assignment?

Though I'm jealous at the desk/room you had in germany, I defenitly don't envy the desk you have in Russia.
But at least you have a desk...
Good luck with the job in Russia, let's hope they will let you return before to long to enjoy your painting room again!

Wow Prof, that's one impressive room there (the German one, I mean...)!
You can often tell quite a bit about someone from their workspace. I wonder what mine says about me...?

Don't appologise, if I had my way I'd torch the place for the insurance. lol

Hey, tell us about that building you are doing. Who is the manufacturer or is it scratchbuilt?

you are a little disorganised,
Disorganised? I know where everything is. Sorta. Well, the bits that matter, anyway.
@Sinewgrab; Where's the four-legged walker in the bottom left from?
@traveller; That's the GW fantasy building. A very nice and very expensive model indeed.
-
Hey, tell us about that building you are doing. Who is the manufacturer or is it scratchbuilt?
answer_is_42 got it right. It's the main part of the GW Fortified Manor House. It is expensive at the moment but I was lucky enough to get their special Warhammer Buildings Set when it was first released. It cost about $150 CDN but you basically got two of everything except the courtyard walls and the passageway between the two buildings. It also included three sets of Walls and Fences! At current prices, it would set you back about $255 to buy the individual sets so it was a great deal.
-
Same question?
@Sinewgrab; Where's the four-legged walker in the bottom left from?
.
Prof
Your place in Russia looks better lit than my space in the garage.

-
@Sinewgrab; Where's the four-legged walker in the bottom left from?
You know, I am not entirely sure anymore. I got it back when I first started doing models and such when I was 12? 13? It was a Robotech model - one of about 20 sets that cost anywhere from 10 to 15 bucks - which was expensive to me at the time. This one I am currently converting so that I may be able to use it as a Leman Russ in WH40K. I found it in a box I had forgotten about when I was clearing the attic.

Prof, are they your legs under that desk or someone elses?

Heck, that is a cubby-hole isn't it?
How you manage to produce such immaculate miniature buildings in such a dark little corner is beyond me.. ;)
By the way, do you still want all those half timbered buildings lining your shelf...?
Only if you need to make some more space, I'd happily give them house-room :D

Palacial and hihgly organised everyone, mine is a little box room whihc is full to the rafters with boxes and the like, every so often filled with kids stuff ;D

My current painting desk. There's another bench about the same size in the laundry room I use for scenery work, but the lighting is even worse there than over my painting area.
I've got one swing-arm lamp with a 100W-equiv. coily-bulb, daylight balanced, but I really need to get a second identical lamp for the right-hand side of my bench... a second lamp would alsp improve my photography - I clear part of the desk off and set up a tabletop tripod for the better pictures.
My total storage space consists of the space under this desk, and three or four boxes in the storage room. Those of you with organized, well-lit workspaces, I'm envious!
-
Here's my "painting station"... :o
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v732/lavaslair/Paintingstation.jpg)
Most everything else is in boxes.
-
chaos (kā'ŏs')
n.
1. A condition or place of great disorder or confusion.
2. A disorderly mass; a jumble: The desk was a chaos of papers and unopened letters.
3. Often Chaos: The disordered state of unformed matter and infinite space supposed in some cosmogonic views to have existed before the ordered universe.
4. Mathematics. A dynamical system that has a sensitive dependence on its initial conditions.
5. Obsolete. An abyss; a chasm.
And just beyond is what I call the FFFFF waiting room or annex:

Ouch point taken I was doing that for a while until I managed to lay claim to the box room. My tip is to accidently spill some paint on the dining room table or when dry brushing cause the painted walls to have a pointilist look to them that seemed to do the trick for me ;)

Yes Jim thank god luckily I caught her and she vomited immediately, though straight down to casualty incase she had inhaled any, this was a good while ago and I think she tended to be a disaster area when a toddler and it took me a litle while to become ultra careful but not before she had;
Poured a pot of whitte paint on the new suite
Eaten a packet of cigarettes
Stuck toy plates (from sylvanians) up her nose on three occassions - because she enjoyed going to see the nice doctors and nurses ;D

Good :) It does sound like she has got it in for herself though lol
I've had a mouthfull of celulose thinners before today and didn't feel proper for a good few days after :-X

I cant quite remember if she was given so "antidote" or not now but the risk was with the vomiting of aspiration where by she could still inspire the fumes fomr the vomit. The problem was that we were at my Mums up norht and packing to leave after xmas (I had got some GB saxons and been painting them whilst up there during the hols) so the trip home waqs delayed while we made sure she was ok.

Wow. Spacious. I'vr got to fool myself with similar photograph of my own workspace.
I was going to say someting... Yes, right: it is funny to that almost everyone, just like me, seem to crowd themselves out to the very edge of the desk. I clean my desc every Friday night. On Saturday I have plenty of space whereupon to rest my elbows. On thursday evening I'm glad if I can give my wrist some support on the work surface.
A panaoramic view of the room I have taken over. My workspace faces west so can get damn hot in summer, an acceptable price for bright light.
It seems a bit bland but it's in tidy mode at the mo. I'm a really messy worker and so not to drive myself (too) insane, at the end of each 'project' I have to do a tidy-up. I'm lucky to have all this space BUT it's also where I game and the present layout doesn't really allow gaming and painting etc to be going on at the same time. I built the units years back when I worked at home and had a ruddy great monitor sat on the window ledge - what I'd really like to do is clear out a load of my wife's stuff in the cabinets then put in a gaming table that bridges width ways, maybe folding down from the walls when not in use ........... one day, that and a repaint with a display of militaria and my books and my dvds and my................ (me = :-* ; wife = :o)

I did a big clean & re-organize sweep on my painting desk the day before this thread resurfaced and I took the photo, but before that random disorganized stuff was crowding in on all sides!

That's because everything has little legs and finds it very amusing to encroach on your space...
You'll never catch them at it though o_o

You're right there, but I have seen the little buggers wink at me on occasion. ;) They sit there on the painting shelf, some undercoated, some with some basic colours blocked in and they look at me and taunt me, trying to tempt me to finish them...

Hi. New guy - old mess:
My desk in the bedroom. No natural light and a single 40W bulb behind a plastic lampshade...
Been quite inspired by some of the desks in this thread, so might give 'being organised and tidy' a go at some point :)

Yours is tidy! Look! I can see table surface! And your paints are far more organised than mine...
-
(http://i33.tinypic.com/25riate.jpg)
That's mine... I have no dedicated rooms, and I do a lot of different things like electronics stuff, painting and scratchbuilding, so my table is not enought.... I use all the floor of my room.... :P Poor my carpet :P

lol Sorry, but it looks like your are filming some sort of sordid and highly specialized porno movies in that room! Where can I get a copy?
-
ASD!!! modellistic porn movies? mmmm, intresting! :P let's say that I haven't enough space for a lab and for a room, so I have to decide..... and the one on the tripod is just a telescope.... ;P maybe should be better for filming miniatures having sordid things XDXDXD
-
The title 'A lick of paint' comes to mind for any production resulting from that room. If you use the desk shown on the right, do you end up kneeling, or is there a chair hiding somewhere?
-
my table is 33 cm from ground... no tables there... I always sit on the ground... :P
-
Ok my turn .
My desk is set into the corner of my lounge . Its a bit untidy looking but I hope to buy something better after I redecorate.
I get natural light over my left shoulder and have a window on the right but I usually work at night most of the time.
I also have a terrain building table. (dining room table) as I got fed up with using my wargame table to build things on.

Well since everybody else is showing off I figured it was my turn. After several years of using the guest room for my stuff I finally got around to completing my "man cave", much to the wife's relief.
this is a view of the general workspace shortly after it was put together - it is much more crowded now. The desk is my painting area and there is now an additional shelf above it. The shelves to the right of the area hold all the models, minis, and molds. My pour table can also be seen on the right.
this is my planning area with drafting table. There is an alcove to the right of it which houses more shelves and a small desk with my tool box.
this is my build table with storage under for some of my scratch building supplies.
All these photos were taken about 9 mos ago - shortly after completing the room. With all the projects I have going on now it doesn't look anywhere this neat and tidy anymore.
-
A veritable Bat Cave! You should have a pipe organ installed to.
-
Hey that’s cheating he has lights and heating in his room :o :o
We really need a green emotioicon for envy/ jealousy
-
Hammers - the pipe organ is still in the box lol
don't hate me - it took over 5 yrs to get this space not to mantion a damn pricey mortgage that is sometimes barely affordable. :'(
-
What a lovely room, envy as I sidle up next to the cat which cant be swung
-
What a great room. It was worth the wait. Enjoy!

Left my then wife & 2 kids for a weekend in a squat in downtown Peckham back in 1990 while I dashed all over the country to meet various cottage model manufacturers. That was back in the days when I was a military modeller rather than a wargamer. There were 9 Aussies & Kiwis normnally living there and all very comfortable.
Don't appologise, if I had my way I'd torch the place for the insurance. lol
Go back home Prof, stuff the job. It's only money! ;)

Since others are sharing, I recently took some photos of my workspace as part of a soul-cleansing exercise about my lead mountain. Its more of a catalogue to make myself feel guilty, to be honest, but there are some pics of my workspace there, like this one of my paint station in its storage location.
More can be seen here: Keeper's Workspace (http://www.azaleanempire.co.uk/thumbs/hobby1.htm)
There is a part 2 on my webpage as well, but that is more about the garage when the bulk of my lead mountain is stored. It hasn't stopped my buying yet, but it has applied enough guilt to make me tidy up, somewhat!! :)

... and this is my very own workbench...

I'm new to this forum, but not so new to the hobby. I rent but I'm also a bachelor and live alone so more than at any other time I've let the hobby take over my living room. I was just thinking before I saw this thread I needed more shelving. I hae a computer desk and more comfie chair and I need ultimately to get a better chair to paint from but it can't have arms...

I am very lucky as I have a reasonable amount of space, and as the lady has a laptop now I am the sole occupant! :D
Just to make you all jealous I am now in the position to plan a rebuild for the sole purpose of painting and modelling, hence the screwfix catalogue open in the last picture!
I am going to aim for this...
So custom desktop, and shelf storage with a separate computer and painting/working area, it is going to be sweet :-*
If any one has any handy tips I would love to hear them and i will update when work begins in the new year, al about budget now...

You are far braver than me - having a PC in the vicinity of all that painting, glueing etc. Maybe you are just less accident-prone?

I have siezed the smallest bedroom and converted it via left over cabinets from... anywhere, mounted with shims and blocks into a continuous frontage with counter tops. I try to totally clean between seasons... er, about once per month to counter tops as it seems to generate excess modeling supplies out of thin air!

Wife tends to remain away from it for some reason :)
http://armoredink.blogspot.com/2009/02/where-it-all-takes-place.html
This second shot has my customized Bulk Head Door, I thought a plain hollow core door rather uninspired for the entrance to my mad scientist lab of hobbying soooo Wood trim and Cast rivet heads, plus my god son applying his large scale painting talent to it, it is now a ships bulkhead door!
Last shot is my 2 buddies that make me keep miniatures picked up when not painting, or they become literal cats paws in some unintelligable power game of cat and mouse.....

Loving that door, not sure if I could convince the other half it was a good idea for my/our 'hobby' room.
A good point about your buddies, got a couple myself which should be considered when I re-model the room.

Looks very nice. Unfortunately my WW2 gaming is dedicated to 15mm these days. I use the Lindberg LSU/LCT & the LCI (scales differ but beggars can't be choosers).

A few photos of my studio. I am currently working on 10mm terrain, and 10mm Gauls. Behind my painting table is a bookshelf which holds tubs of painted figs. In the small closet there is a tiny bookcase which I use to stack magazines, etc...and off in the corner is a stack of plastic drawers which holds misc terrain. Not pictured is another large wooden bookcase which holds the family library.

Looks like you're gonna have to get rid of the ghosts and bodies before you can do much upstairs lol. Only then will the fun start - and it looks like you're in for a lot of it.

Do you think it is possible to train a ghost so that he make the dices roll for you? ;)

I doubt the ghost will help me at all - especially with the dice. Percy doesn't seem to like me. :?

It's a bank my wife had as a child. You drop a coin in it's back and a hat pops up off it's head. At the time the photo was taken we had several items from the attic in this room for temporary storage.

I love this thread. I get a slightly perverse kick out of seeing all of these places from all over the world where all of you guys get up to more or less what I do.
Add to that that I have traded figures with some of the people here and I might even see some figures that used to be mine. Weird.
My contribution:
I paint in the living room, often while watching TV with my wife. The TV distracts me and slows down my output. On the other hand being able to paint in the room with her helps with my ongoing "marriage" project while still allowing me to to make some progress with post-apoc project, zombie project, pulp sci-fi project etc.
The purple drawers are filled with paints, flock, sand and other related paraphenalia.
The area is deliberately small so that I am forced to tidy it up regularly and because as it lives in a "grown up" part of the house it needs to be kept relatively unobtrusive.
This is view out of the window on the left of the painting area, just to give where I live some context.
I only paint in the living room. Figure preparation, terrain building, messy jobs like sanding resin and anything else like it takes place in the dedicated "toy room" downstairs. Its where all of my dork stuff lives and where boardgames and figure games get played too.
Its quite large room (a little smaller than 6 x 4m ) but its a bit untidy at the moment. I am currently kitbashing a few models from bits and pieces which always tends to be messy as I search for bits/ispiration.
I try to keep on top of it and to tidy it regularly. Unfortunatley my whimsical and easily distracted nature means that I tend to have an idea and then enthusiastically make a mess on top of an existing mess a bit too frequently. The toy room is scheduled to get a tidy up tomorrow, but this is how the room regularly looks.
At least I get to leave things that I am working on out. When I was renting I used to find having to set up and then take down the area each time very demoralising. Not these days :)

Any paint spillage issues in the living room that may derail the "marriage" project.
I like the ideas as I keep getting... some flack... from disappearing in to the work room/office/toy room/spare room.

The living room has a wooden floor so that can be wiped clean if I manage to fling paint on it. So no problems there as yet. The chair that I paint in is dedicated to purpose. As a result if I manage to get a significant amount of paint on it then thats not the end of the world either.
I like the ideas as I keep getting... some flack... from disappearing in to the work room/office/toy room/spare room.
Its what I have done since we moved in together, a long time ago. It definitely has had an adverse effect on the number of figures that I get painted. In balance it has helped with harmonious co-habitation overall for us I think.

I never *quite* , in my own marriage, can get my head around how sitting slack-jawed before the telly can be so nurturing to the relation so mostly I don't.

There is a lot to be said for that, although a certain amount depends on what is actually on the tv too. We attempt to limit the programmes watched to those of at least slightly taut-jawed variety ;)
In particular I do find that watching something genuinely funny together is positive shared experience and therefore quite "nurturing".
Another part of the reason that I paint in front of the TV is that I am nearly unable to watch it if I am not doing something else a little more worthwhile at the time. I get very fidgety, and thats even if it is something that I particularly enjoy watching. We dont ever just sit down on the couch and "see whats on", because it is nearly always crap.
While I am in the "toy room", my wife is often in her dedicated ceramics studio built next to our house. So we do get up to a little more than simply watch the tube :)
On the other hand being able to be in the same room as her while painting gives us time together that we wouldnt have otherwise. It is obviously a "horses for courses" thing, but that is why my small painting workbench is in the living room and not "the dungeon".

Hi, I'm proud to announce my new wargame dedicated room! :-* This room will be used as workbench and will host scarce battles and skirmishes.
http://wargameterrain.blogspot.com/2010/04/wargame-room-finished.html (http://wargameterrain.blogspot.com/2010/04/wargame-room-finished.html)
Greets,
-
Very nicely organised.
Well done!
-
That room needs more posters, a cork board with post-its, and some 'stumble-bumps.' Speaking of hiding in hobby caves, I get a few rounds shot my way too occasionally. It's an essential nuisance of the process.

That is a nice one!!!

Thanks for the comments but I rather don't want to put my walls full of posters. However I already have a corkboard installed, ideal for keeping trac of ongoing projects!

My workbench in October/November (?)
It's changed a bit since then as I have settled in!!! lol
-
My workbench in October/November (?)
It looks nice and tidy. I try to keep my painting area quite small and then tidy it reasonably regularly. If there is a lot of room, then I tend to just fill it up with mess.
So smaller is better in that case I think.
-
It's actually quite abit messier now...
The drawers on the right are now ABOVE a set of drawers full of unopened flintloque boxes (or opened, but not based or cleaned up!).
The scanner has moved on the left, but now has a CD player and a load of models.
The top of the desk is covered in models and WIP sculpts. 2 of the models just because they have no home as they are so big (GW Balrog and SST Plasma Bug).
I think I'll have a tidy up tomorrow evening. lol

I finally got around to photographing the travelling circus that is my current painting station. I used to have a nice permanent setup complete with cozy chair in the living room, but the birth of my (now almost three-year-old) son Rocco necessitated some changes. Now everything is in an Ikea cabinet on wheels that is normally parked out of the way with the drawers to the wall. It is full of lead and thus too heavy for him to move on his own (he has given it a good try though). Most of the paint is in the case from Silicon Dragon, but some Foundry and other pots are in the cabinet.
Once he's safely tucked in I wheel it over to the couch and put in a good hour or two while the wife chats, reads, or watches TV.
It has worked out much better than I had thought it would and I'm still managing to get in about two hours of painting daily (one before work and one after Rocco is in bed).
-
Nicely organised paints. Mine are organised by manufacturer in drawers which isnt ideal, but its ok. Yours is much better.
It can be a pain to have to put up and take down a painting area every time that you use it. It is cool that you have found a solution that works for you.
I'm still managing to get in about two hours of painting daily (one before work and one after Rocco is in bed).
Painting before work :o
Assuming that you work a 9-5 or something similar, then thats pretty hardcore :)
-
I work 7-3:30, but luckily my commute is only about 20-30 minutes. If I'm up by five it gives me plenty of time to eat and spend a leisurely hour or so painting. I'm a morning person by nature though.
-
The only reason to get up at Five is to go on holiday. No other cause would get me out of bed at that hour. Not even if the house were burning down around me.
The day the house was burning down around me I waited until Seven before getting up. The smoke was bearable until then. I am not a morning person.
-
5am? Gee got up at 4:45 every work day for 31 years, 5 am is auto get up time now! That and the cats get me up if I over sleep by 10 min :)
-
LOL Get up at 5am? Pfft i get up at 7, if not 8am. But then, i am usually going to bed about 5am. :-)

Painting before work :o
You know, I've been meaning to do this painting before work thing. I generally have 2-3 hours between taking the missus to work and setting off to the trenches myself, but nine times out of ten I end up on the couch with the computer in my lap, watching Dr. Who or League of Gentlemen on Netflix.
-
I'm still managing to get in about two hours of painting daily (one before work and one after Rocco is in bed).
I am very impressed, to get 2 hours in and build and stripdown your workbench! Major respect!
I am up to get the missus up at 6 and have some twiddle thumbs time myself in the morning, I sometimes get a bit of modelling in, but to break out the paints I would get sucked in I think and constantly be late for work!
I lack discipline :D:(
-
One key factor in all of this is that it only takes about two to three minutes to wheel the cabinet in and open everything up. Before I had the case and cabinet I only made my discipline check about half the time. lol
-
I wake up at 5, sculpt until 8 then go to uni at 9. Come home at 4, go to work at 5 and come back at 10.
Life sucks.
-

Life sucks.
When I was at university I took a portable table, paints and figures in the car to work on at lunch and between classes-guess that's why my social life sucked. lol Now I get up at 5:30 and after my morning chores (wait till you have kids and too many pets that demand attention every morning) I squeeze about 20 min of painting in while waiting for the misses so we can commute to work. Any other painting must wait till the clan is settled for the night.
-
lol, a car at uni. What a strange concept. lol
I live out of town as well, so have to catch a bus. ;D
-
lol
I used to take the 12 from Kenilworth to Coventry Uni, but it went through Warwick Uni and all the Cov towns which took it an hour!
I take the X17 now, which takes 15-20 minutes.
Kenilworth is about 8-10 miles away from Cov by the way! lol
Just not used to the buses round here. Abingdon to Oxford took 10 minutes! But costed £4!!!! £4!
I dunno. ;D

Hey its California, if you don't have a car by the time your in Univeristy there is something wrong with the world ;D Strarting in Spring all Friday campus classes would end by noon so we could head to the nearest beach for the begining of the "weekend" classes. Our beach was Avila so this "class" was called Avila 101-who ever said the '70's were dull.... :-*

Must not have been many good drugs at your campus if you can actually remember being there in the 70's. lol My 70's college days are such a blur :D

My painting table and computer (and a large glass of some dark brew :-X) in its "clean" state. Picture from the start of May. Too much of my lead and plastic mountain is buried away in air-free containers, not that even a 1/8 of it could ever fit on the waiting shelves.
There's my Neo-Sov infantry platoon and specialists and a few zombies I plan on painting sometime in the future and a tyranid broodnest up top, Tau, Valhallans and veteran troopers on the right, a lot of stuff of various genres on the left and underneath, a small portion of my GW bits in various containers on bottom left, and part of my on-going commission with a friend as well as some NBC troopers I plan to continue painting after I finish my commission.
Anyone seen my kippers? I know they were in there somewhere.
-
Hey Everyone!
Aaron's mobile painting station inspired me to build my own.
It would be easier for me to paint in the evening but in order to spend time with the wife it's hard to do. She likes to work on her laptop while watching TV and there is no TV in my painting room.
So, I dug out an old typing desk that came from the High School across the street and adapted it. Casters were put on the legs and a new, slightly larger, top was attached (the old top broke apart).
They're hard to see in the picture but there is a small drawer under the area where the mat is and a pull out board to lay papers on under the area where the light is.
Now I can roll it into the same room where she, and the TV, are.
BTW - I do plan to stain, and seal, the top.
For those of you who are curious, the dresser behind the table contains terrain building supplies.

Nice job and glad I provided some inspiration! Great idea to add the light and book stand! I have a similar lamp and would like to do something similar, but I'm probably better off waiting until my son is a little more under control. Right now he'd see it as a grab handle to hoist himself up on the cabinet!

No - thank you for the idea! :D
The stand is handy to have. I've had this one for about 15 years. I had to build something to attach the light to because my main desk has no lip on it. My first attempt didn't work due to the weight of the lamp and a cat brushing up against it - it easily toppled over. So I made one using two bricks as weight. This created a little cubby hole under the lamp for other items I might need. But with a young kid around...well that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish!

Below are a couple of posts I have on my blog that describes my workbench area. I use a moveable work surface and some tool cabinets to try and keep things organized
http://lairoftheubergeek.blogspot.com/2010/05/workbench-improvements.html
http://lairoftheubergeek.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
While the whole setup is "moveable" it doesn't get moved that often. Only when ordered by the wife!

Well, being new and all, I guess I'd better show you all where my nefarious schemes are all hatched...
As you can see, I am in the compulsively neat category. And this is on a bad day (see the miniatures kicking back right on my workspace?)... One of the many mysteries of the world; why can't one abide by one's company's strict 'clean-desk-policy' to save one's life, but at home, even the dust on the workbench gets scrupulously categorised before being 'filed' away lol
The boxes on the shelves over the desk are an amalgam of a life's worth of wargames and old unit boxes, now filled with spares, shelved projects, impulse buys etc; your average gamer's stockpile basically. The drawer cabinets against the wall of my workbench hold bitz, bitz and, oh, also bitz. Hey; what's a neurotic person going to do with just one, large bitzbox? Despair, that's what. ;D
Anywho... Here's a bit of a close-up, with shots of the three top drawers of the cabinet beneath the desk on the left, holding my tools, larger supplies and paints. What resides in the bottom two is better not mentioned...
I built the entire desk myself out of 4x4 and 8x4cm beams, 2,5cm thick underlayment and leftover laminate floor. The beams form a supporting framework, sturdy enough to stand on. The edges of the desk were sanded flush and had iron-on veneer strips added, before being ever so slightly rounded off for comfort. The media cabinet (for lack of a better word), was also home made, with silver/grey veneered fibre board and aluminum strips finishing the front. The all-in-one printer is nicely flush with the work surface. The silver/grey surface topping the cabinet is loose. If a new printer is placed, the shelf can be adjusted to the correct hight and I have spare tops, which can be sawed to fit and installed when required...
The desk wraps around the room, accomodating another PC rig (my wife's) and her portion of the desk, which is mostly cluttered with, well, I don't know; women's stuff. She's the type that has the genetically coded compulsion to clutter any horizontal surface she encounters. Yes; this includes the floor and yes; my life is a constant struggle to keep my side of the desk free of her clutterings. But you know what they say; opposites attract. Gotta go; she just left an empty mug next to me and I fear there will be coffee rings... ;)
-
:o neat! lol

If you would discard about half of the boxes on the shelves yours is approaching my ideal workspace, Daeothar. Which I fail to keep up myself in an epic sort of way.

OMG

:'(

:o Discard the boxes? Blasphemy good sir; most of them are filled with their original contents; board games of yesteryear, which I continually strive to get my gaming friends hooked on. With only limited succes I admit though. ::)
As for the smaller boxes directly over my work area; those hold the aforementioned projects. I'm also of the 'out of sight but not out of mind' kind. Meaning I have projects up there lying dormant for almost a decade, but one by one, they do get finished. Too bad the input is still larger than the output...
The boxes on the top shelf are all computer games, most also at least a decade old by now. I keep telling myself I will get an old rig to play them on but , yeah well... :D
-

Try Windows 7. It's compatibility mode is excellent.
As for your work station... this must be what heaven looks like! ;D

No more Half-sheet of ply-wood on top of the dining room table for Peabody... No more dining room table either! ;D I have my priorities straight.
A nice generous 6'x6' L-shaped work surface with a custom built hutch for storage & lighting. It took longer than I hoped, but everything is finally built & installed. Still need to pick up a super long deluxe power-bar and a 24"x18" cutting mat. My existing rolling storage bins for paint & tools fit nicely under the work-tops.
The corner features built-in down-draft filtration for airbrushing! Take that! Artograph... I'll use your excellent filter system, but your $450.00 price tag for a counter-top spray-booth is too rich for my blood. This entire project cost barely $150.00 more than one Artograph 'booth'.
Sure it all looks nice & clean now; just wait until I settle in with some paint & glue and then it will look just like home. 8)

Here is my new hobbies room, due to us getting a new carpet soon I had to move out of the living room, plus I down sized my computer table, bigger it is more rubbish you have on it, so were to put my hobby room, thought about the garden shed but to cold and no power, but in back of my mind been the airing cupboard under the stirs, not very wide only 35 inches, and the roof slops to the back, on the plus side the wee outside window opens, there is a air vent above my head and most of all power.
The paint rack is home made and holds 84 foundry bottles, the draws are Ikea I believe they no longer make them.
Seat cost £8 out of a charity shop, plywood for the self was free, below the self I keep my air compressor and boxes with model stuff in, on window self lamp and soldering iron
In the picture you can see my home made bottle holder, got the foam from a shop selling instant glue, the glue bottles sit in the foam insert in the box they came in, just asked and was given the insert as there was only one bottle left.
I glued it to a bit of 6mm MDF, most bottles fit snugly.

Very efficient use of space. You were never a submariner by chance? lol
-
WOW!!! That's tiny!! :o
I'm interested in the roof as well though. I love old houses and assume yours is old. Is it?
-
My, I hear people talking about their oubliettes now and then on this forum but you take it seriously...
-
reminds me of my first one in the store room, but yours is still more tiny, bravo!
-
The house is old 1926 it was made, and the sloping roof is the stir case, also in there with me is the gas meter that on back wall right hand side below the self and electrical meter you can see on right hand side, I put a cover over the power box, and I don't worry about the gas meter as I don't smoke and council checks it once a year.
The air vent above my head needs a sliding vent put on it, can get a real draft in winter time coming in, that and the window open will also get rid of any bad smells, but saying that the cold air will keep me wide awake in the wee hours of the morning, I tend to come alive then for my hobbies‘.
when I first put the self in I was happy, then I realised that as I could not move to the right due to the power I thought why not extend the self, you can see that, then I put a small self above the paint rack and thought it looked good then it hit me if I make it L shape ill have more self room, so the self was re cut and made to fit around the corner, over all am happy with set up as long as I don't put any more weight on am ok.
I can step in with one leg sit down and swing the other leg around, or just push the seat out on it's caster and get out.
And thank you for your commits.
Blog just got it started need fill it more.

I'm doing a big clean-up on my work room as well as the rest of the house. Thought I would take some before pictures and track my progress as I refurnish my workspace.

Figure storage in the left cabinet and finished terrain pieces in the right cabinet. Casting gets done on the table in the middle with mold storage in the map cabinet below. The side cabinets have roll up doors that help keep the dust out.

Found away to get more room in my work shop, was in BBQ when I saw keyboard slides, bought a set and put them on, also found some one who makes paint racks to suit my small work shop, bought two for my Vallejo paint bottles, for ink's washes and most commonly used colours.

jnr: It's delightful to see small spaces used so efficiently, but I think I'd get claustrophobic in there! :o

Here's my workspace in 2008:
Since then I've noticed I tend to go places to paint, and I get claustrophobic if I'm buttoned up in the office for too many months (yes, months) at a time. My painting has become much more mobile - paint case, working space on the detachable lid, minis and supplies in a pistol case, and two lights - it all fits in a little gardening bag when I want to go to the game store or in-laws' to paint:
Now, the shelves of completed minis (9) and arctic-camo figures (2)...that's another matter.
-
Just skimmed through this thread and it's made me realise the one thing i hate about the hobby...all the damn clutter.
Doesn't matter how organised i try to be (and you guys too), the workbench and storage is always cluttered. o_o
That goes for the tabletop too...all those dice, markers, tapes, etc. cluttering up the battlefield.
Other than that, there are some pretty sweet set-ups you guys have. :D
-
Been out of the game for a while as I had to pack up my stuff and vacate my painting area so that a bunch of plumbers could tear up the floorboards and put in a new heating/water system. Then there was redecorating the room, and then Christmas, and then something else, probably.
But now I'm back, baby! And here's my new layout:
Not very tidy by Teutonic standards, but believe me, that is staggeringly neat for me.
How long before it turns back into this...

About ten, fifteen minutes do you think?

How does the door work ??? (and no smart arse comment about turing the handle etc ;D )
cheers

I don't know what's behind that door. And from the strange gurgling noises and scratching sounds I don't want to know.
(It's a regular door that works in the normal way, it just isn't in use. If you opened it you would be see the back of a wardrobe, or possibly Narnia.)

is it all mdf, right? i wanna do something msimilar for the miniatures and the crafting and sculpting tools!

Yes, all mdf. 3mm sheet cut for what you see and some 10mm cut into steps bracing it underneath

Damn, I thought by building a rack that overhangs by a foot would negate that ;D

You need to watch you don't take too many paints off of the right hand side, at one go lol

I've always been jealous when reading this thread. Some of the set ups here are stunning. Unfortunately I don't have the space for a fixed set up, and until recently I was forced to pack away all my painting equipment when I'd finished. As you can imagine, this prove to be a real drag and actually put me off painting. Annoying me no end I decided to take some action.
I spent quite a few of my lunchtimes working on this project. I took some inspiration for the old GW painting station (quite a bit actually). I also designed the workbench to fit snugly into a shelves on my desk- meaning that I can leave everything set up.

Hopefully this wee bench should increase the frequency of my painting, by allowing me a wee 5 minutes here and there. The material is 6mm sheet acrylic.
Cheers

That's was one tidy bench B6, I hadn't though of using a butcher's block for a modelling table.
@ Bezzo - the cheese was excellent - although the car was a bit pungent when we brought it back from the continent.

Thanks Ramirez. It's great for small spaces (mine is in the breakfast nook in the kitchen) and I wish I'd thought of it sooner.

Cheers
Andy
This is wonderful. Could you share your build perhaps? Dimensions and materials would be very helpful.

Me: "Phwooar! Wow! Oh yeah, fantastic! Look at the rack on that!"
The Mrs: "What are you looking at?"
Me: ( hurriedly covering laptop screen ) "Oh...er...nothing! Nothing much at all."
The Mrs: "You're looking at photos of other people's workbenches again aren't you?"
Me: ( hangs head ) "Yes dear...."
The Mrs: "Why can't you use the internet for looking at porn like a normal man?"
Better tidy up my bench....or maybe convert the garage...?

As today is the last day of the year I thought I would have a quick dive into the mess:
18 bits of fence requiring flock
8 ice rock piles needing another coat of scenic cement
1 ice bridge awaiting basing and possible ice edging
1 test ice bridge with ice being added
12 Kobolds awaiting putting away till I can paint them up and buy the other few I need
6 Kobolds being stripped of their paint
2 Packs of Inuit unopened (sledge and huskies)
1 set of Luftles awaiting trimming
1 small pile of ruins awaiting put-away
1 box of 12 / 13 6mm buildings from Total Battle Miniatures (ACW / Cowboys)
? 6mm figures (around 50 / 60)
In various stages of painting:
12 set of pipe work
3 Musk ox
1 Sabre Tooth Tiger (big beast)
2 Inuit (15mm)
8 Cave men (15mm)
1 15mm sledge with 3 dogs
1 four legged polar bear
1 ten legged polar bear
4 Yeti
4 Splintered Light Mice
1 Viking boat (toy from Yorvik) for a possible game
5 Bits of wire security fence
3 wooden rail fences
1 6mm building awaiting the glue drying on the tufts to photo and post here
1 28mm GW skeleton
1 15mm GZG NI
2 Giant penguin idols
1 small box of 'bits' - hex shapes, bug holes, ruins etc.
Then the odd bits:
1 really grotty cup (tea)
1 paperclip
2 tubes of glue
2 CDs used as pallets and stands
8 pots of paint
1 pot of flex paste
1 pot of gel
2 CompactFlash cards
1 pot of Superglue
1 pair of tweezers
1 craft knife (already bitten me today)
1 pack of green turf mix and test stick
1 tube of PVA
1 box of white rocks
1 sheet of ice plastic
1 dinosaur tail and skull
1 pot of brush water (seen better days - looks like the Humber if that helps)
1 tube of cold sore cream
1 spray screen / glasses cleaner
Not bad for the end of the year - should keep me busy till Jan at this rate lol
Happy New Year all

Though to be fair:
1) The 6mm shed is in the room having shown my wife it last year.
2) I forgot 4 6mm ACW and 1 15mm pig
3) That's a new cup of tea
Now wait till tonight - I'll post the difference up with luck :o

Good job, it looks great.
I like the ideas as I keep getting... some flack... from disappearing in to the work room/office/toy room/spare room.
Just under two years later it comes to fruition. This hobby is all about patience.
Well done, I hope that the new surroundings inspire you :)

Here's my workspace, an old bureau with a flip down front. This folds up to keep things nice and tidy when not painting, chair tucks away under the computer desk to the right. Paints are in the multi-drawer unit to the left, which is from Ikea but no longer available. Room is reasonably tidy because the house has been decluttered to put it on the market. The lead pile is all boxed up in the garage!

My wife is being driven insane at the moment by the mess........on the 'other' side of the room we have the king sized bed, a large wardrobe and a chest of drawers.......there is almost space to walk around the bed....... I am currently looking at IKEA room dividers to hide it all so she can feel like she has a bedroom again.......I actually do feel her pain. Unfortunately that is because I am on the receiving end of it most of the time ;D
-
Dozing, you only need a nice colored light weight sheet to drape over the entire work area when its not in use to remedy the "unsightly mess" situation..... ;)

I wish I could find some decent-but accessible way to store all the long, thin clutter (balsa, basswood, dowel, textured wood lengths, textured foam sheets) without just boxing it up in something. Right now it's all lying at the back of my work table so I can see at a glance how much I have.
I'm in a pickle because my workbench is also my game table. It's a mess (though I could probably clean it up in about a half-hour or an hour), which dissuades me passing along gaming invites.

When you do find a way to store the long stuff let me know, you can't see it in the pics but there are sheets of balsa, card and styrene tucked away in virtually every corner.

That's where the plastic storage boxes come in, it's a lot easier if there is somewhere for everything to go, and because they stack they are more space efficient than shelves or cupboards.
Cheers!

For storing long stuff, I had purchased some mini blinds and they came in clear rectangular tubes that protect the light weight balsa and such and allow me to see whats in which tube at the same time.
-
Have you considered opening a shop ??? lol

For storing long stuff, I had purchased some mini blinds and they came in clear rectangular tubes that protect the light weight balsa and such and allow me to see whats in which tube at the same time.
Oh man, I know exactly the kind of thing you're talking about.
Sadly, I don't think I can justify buying blinds for the packaging alone. ;D
Might be able to get the packaging some other way though...
Anyway, all this talk made me go out and get a little storage tray for my unpainted minis. Even though I run to very small numbers of figures, I too have succumbed to the "Buying more than you're painting disease". Got all the loose packets off my table and freed up about a quarter of the space. That's that much closer to actually being able to quickly and practically switch from work table to game table.
-
Have you considered opening a shop ??? lol
Sounds too much like my missus, I misguidedly tried to justify some purchases by declaring that I got them much cheaper than they were worth, she now keeps asking when am I going to sell them. My response is to hunker down into a squatting position, stroking said miniatures and proclaiming 'come on preciouses, daddy loves you all, he wont leave you, no he won't ...'
-
Pringles tubes are what you need :)
I've got loads, normal height for the tall stuff and cut down for the offcuts etc and for the sheet materials a small set of file drawers will do the trick (even a cheap plastic version would do the job).
cheers

Finally after all of these wishing, I have a permanent set up!
Travelled to Ikea and picked up a couple of bits and pieces.

I'm further looking to bulk it out with a set of ikea wooden drawers. Also that beech/birch strip is actually a drawer.
The lights are ok, but if anyone can tell me of an (inexpensive UK-based) source of daylight bulbs I'd be very happy. I'm also looking for a nice stacking paint rack; does anyone have an idea where I can get one?
Cheers
Andy

Cool! Actually, i'd go for some white lights for painting. I painted with yellow lights (3000 K) for a while, but then i realized that many tones were differents when at the sunlight.!
-
I'd love to get a couple of nice bright daylight-ish bulbs for after hours painting as well. Long hours means that I'm often home well after sundown on work days.

No worries over there mate, My desk is normally more like your. I always hid the crap in some closets though, but it is there as well ;)
I guess that most people who don't have a tidy desk don't dare to take a picture, making you a real hero for your bravery!

Having been in a bit of a painting slump the last few weeks, I decided tonight to clean off and reorganize my painting desk. It had become cluttered with finished figures, leftover crap from scenery projects, a giant jumble of paints, and real-life stuff that had no business on my hobby desk...
So here it is, in terrifyingly neat array.
At the back left, my artist's inks (black lids), Reaper paints (white lids) with random GW and other paint in between. Moving right, the good paintbrushes in the old superglue bottle, current superglue bottle lurking behind, then the big tin of tools and a random box of supplies.
In the foreground from far left, the swatch cards to remind me what colours some paints actually are, scrap paper for painting notes, miscellaneous figures around the cutting mat, and the scrap CD I use as a paint palette on the right.
One of my projects for this summer is to make some sort of shelf set to fit at the back of this desk, to get the ever-growing paint collection slightly more organized and free up space on the desk for actual work! The desk area is only 32" W x 22" D...
It also only looks this neat about twice a year! Hopefully now I can get going again on the dragons, Cossacks, cavemen and other projects all neatly laid out.

If you need it, it's probably on that table... but you'll have to get me to find it for you.

Fram i have to ask,
Why do you have a potato masher on your bench??
-
Oh that's for when people mess with my minis.... uh, er, I mean it's for when I need to water down a large amount of wall compound and don't feel like mashing all the lumps out with a brush. ;)

With your cpu there you can multi task ! :)
Unfortunately that's blessing and danger alike. It's nice to have the option to have a movie or audio book running in the background but sometimes that computer stuff consumes too much precious time: Writing / Reading emails or forum messages, preparing posts for the blog, editing pictures, watching ice hockey... 8)

Here's a picture of mine. My (small) gaming table is next to my workbench. On the right wall of this room is a cabinet in which all my minis are displayed.

Just thought I'd join in and post a pic of my workbench:

Yeah, it's always there - no disasters yet, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time! ;)
I don't get lot of painting done though, mostly sculpting, so there's only water to spill every couple of weeks or so. Tea, on the other hand, is there to spill all the time...

This is my usual mess.

It had sat undisturbed for over a month until yesterday, when I got 14 figures at least up on their feet. Most need further conversion work, so it will be a while before their portraits appear on other threads, but at least I'm back on the horse!

@Hammers
I've used cotton reels for as long as I've painted 28s. The new dowel board is a direct response to my own clumsiness as it perfectly holds twenty-four figures in relative safety.
Do you not find all that wine and sharp objects a dangerous combination? ;)

Here is where all my progress is [not] made! lol I don't know if my workstation is clean because I produce so little, or it is because I have OCD so bad? Or, is it because I have OCD so bad that I produce so little, which keeps my workstation so clean!? ;D

I already posted it in my Thread but it fits even better in here, my first Hobbydedicated Workbench, it was a Brithdaypresent from my Girlfriend ( she is the Best :) ). Now I have no excuses anymore to not paint my stuff.
-
(https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-eWgaxlfvKeM/UHs6EsjdJDI/AAAAAAAAA7s/T0cQL-Lvw_o/s648/2012+-+3)
It's missing a few bits (like the lower shelves of the shelving unit on the left, which have boxes of spare sprues, or the windowsill, which has vehicles and walkers), but that's basically it. For all that it is a small area, it's still more than I've devoted to miniatures on a permanent basis before, and it does a lot for my productivity. Oh, there are also some cupboards on the other side of the room containing boxes of stuff that is not used often.
The folding card table is to be picked up and carried into the living room so I can hang out and watch a movie with my wife while painting.

After having moved (back to) the Netherlands in june, I finally reached the point that I can work on my man cave instead of feeling to guilty about things that need to be done in the rest of the house, albeit there is still plenty to do...
Not only did I move house, but my girlfriend also moved in, so when looking for a house I needed one with some room for a serious man cave.
I claimed the attic as my domain and this weekend finally got arround to work on my storage space. only the back row of carton boxes is still filled to the brim with miniatures and there are a "few" in the storage section that is behind the wall...

"Off course" this is only part of the collection, but I'll be getting some billy cabinets from IKEA soon for storage of more models and my board game collection and still have to place my glass cabinet which shall hold a sampling of the painted miniatures.
Over here you can see where the temperary painting desk (a camping table) is located. In time a proper desk will be put into place, but in the meanwhile, this does the job. Paints and supplies are stored on the shelves to the right of the "desk" for easy access. The rest of the shelves will hold scenery, nicely stored in boxes to prevent too much dust getting on it. When the "real"desk arrives, I'mm move my PC up so I can watch movies/listen to music/search reference material while painting.
Last but not least, there is some room for a reasonable gaming table (1.50 by 3.00 meter). The idea is to put the billy cabinets with the board games behind them. I guess it didn't want to get into focus because it's a bit messy at the moment, but it should give an indication of where games will be played.

I need 3, so of course I have 3 GW ones, a mithril one and 2 elephants from the 80's used to make 2 based on an old wargaming magazine article. ooh and some avertine miniatures elephants as well :D

Right at the moment I would love ANY sort of workbench to paint on. My wood bench is covered with scrap iron undergoing repair, the tool bench is covered in tools and the saw bench is covered with a ruddy mirror frame I promised to rout for a friend! My usual painting area is undergoing decorating (and I can't make it go any faster!!!)
Gah, rant over. Sorry.Just a chance to paint would be nice....
-
Could be worse - leastways those three benches will be fit for service again once they're cleaned and fixed.
We had to rent out my workshop/game room as another bedroom, so I don't have anything anymore! :?
-
I haven't done any painting in months, and part of the reason was the crazed lack of organization on my fairly small painting bench.
I'm badly in need of some paint organizing racks, small shelves or similar to keep paint jars and similar crap from oozing all over the bench and getting in the way of actual painting. There's a great many very nice systems out there, in laser-cut wood, plastic, laser-cut acrylic and all sorts of other materials. They all cost more than I can afford or want to pay, though - I'd much rather put my gaming budget into figures, paints and scenery!
So I grabbed a shoebox lid, some other scrap card, and some tape, and set about making a functional cardboard mockup of a paint rack. Here it is at the back of my bench this evening:
There's a "foot" of scrap card at the back to keep it braced against the wall at the correct angle, and the whole thing is fairly solid. The only problem is, I'll need at least one more the same size to get the rest of my paints and inks up off the bench surface, but it's a start!
Eventually I'd like to use acrylic (which you can get cheap from a local plastics place, especially if you don't care what colour it is) to do a big rack/shelf unit that goes across the whole back of my painting bench, with loads of space for paints, inks, works-in-progress and tool storage. (the cutting mat is 12"x9", if you need a size reference...)

I Like the way both 15th Panzer and Quendil have their cricket equipment handy in case of sudden Zombie attack.
Good thinking on the paint rack Wirelizard.

Hi,
After doing model kits in my younger days I start with my son with miniature gaming now already more than 10 years ago.
Last six months I only work on 1/1 scale scenery.
A new gaming room and workbench en cleaning up of the painting room.
When everything finds a new place, I can start again with gaming, painting and building.
You can find some pictures of my painting, gaming and workbench on: http://thewargameproject.weebly.com/

I have a new space, but the same old desk... it's nice to have it all clean though; moving to a new place is a great reason to clean!
Yes, I'm one of the three people in the world who runs Mac OS and also uses a Windows Phone!

I built mine out of scrap boards and some 5mm MDF. It was less that $5 and took me about an hour including cutting and assembly. See a picture of it in my desk image above. Acrylic might be cool though... definitely less wood-ey than mine anyway!
Thanks

Showing where you work is a more personal form of introduction perhaps than the more normal "Hi from wherever" type. Be that as it may, this is my latest work area:

I try to maintain the proper level of clutter necessary for a creative mind(?) & still have some sections of the floor visible...more or less.

Hi there, just thought I'd put up a picture of my home made modelling workbench for my first post.
The top closes when not in use to keep out the dust and sawdust etc when I use the other workbench.
Mostly ship stuff in this photo but the subjects change fairly regularly.

I love to see how the other guys(gals) work.
Here's some of mine. We have to make do with the space, so I assaulted our Ikea Bookcase.
Theoreticaly I can close it when I'm not working on it. In practice..... not so much.
And my display case, with the stuff I'm still reasonably happy with and hasn't been banished to the 'need to repaint pile'.
(right, when I'm done painting all my unpainted stuff, I'll have time to repaint stuff ::) )
I've got another closet in the bedroom filled with unpainted models and scenery.
Luckily I have a very supportive and understanding wife, though I'm always pushing the boundaries of said support and understanding when storage space concerns....

I hope this was cleaned for the photos!
That level of immaculate tidynes is amazing, even going so far as to label your water jar. Very impressed.
I just hope my wife never sees it or I will have some explaining to do, as my workspace will never be that clean!

Everyone needs a Man Cave!
:D
Aint that the truth. Though in our new place i got a Man Attic instead. I am lucky if it is 10'x10' though. BUT, it is much much better than what i had before which was in a corner of the basement. Though the whole apartment was the basement. :-)
My wife says she needs another child, and I need a man cave. So, it's a bit of a Mexican stand-off at the moment.
Easy enough really, get a Man-child. Problem solved and compromise achieved. No more standoff. :-)
On the top side, I get more time for miniatures now that I sleep on the couch :)
Do as i do, been sleeping on the couch for years now instead of the bed on purpose. A lot more comfortable really. Now all i hear is "when are you going to come back and sleep in the bed?" Not that i ever worried about the "couch" threat, i nipped that in the bud years ago. :-)

Now this is a messy desk! :)

I find dear Hammers' idea of what constitutes "messy" to be rather hilarious. Grimm's bench might be considered messy in H's head, and possibly in Switzerland, but nowhere else. :)

Agree, Grimm’s desk fits even the rules of German “Clean and Tidy Desk Regulations”

No the garden is my wife's domain. It's very neatly kept. What you see is a bit of lavender right in front of my window. They dissappear every April I think.

Time for some new photos of mine, perhaps. Not that is has changed much. Obviously I have not the space of some members to create a real mess, but I like to think I gave it a good shot (neither do I have the camera skills of others to fully capture the effect!).

And ofcourse a bunch of stuff on the floor that I have no idea where to put (yet)
-
Well, I've seen enough cluttered workbenches and rooms crammed with stuff, I no longer have to feel ashamed of my hobbyroom :D
my paint desk :
You don't have to be ashamed ;)
You do nice work there o_o
-
I have two :D
I also have two
my second is the garage (18m by 5m) and i don't even own a car ;D
-
I've got a dungeon.... but it's too damp to leave stuff in, and my gaming table had to be specially designed for it...
You guys don't own cats, do you? Or at least those rooms are off limits to them....mine would have the stuff off the shelves in seconds.
-
My workbench, in the room we call our solar.
Looking unusually sparse, with stuff in progress:

The paints and a pile of stuff are hidden tactfully behind the back of the paint area.
What lurks beneath it:

Toilet, fridge and kitchen are less than a metre from the door.......
I love how the shelves are about to give in to the weight of all your scenery.
This is how God wants a workbench to look like, folks!Take a good look and better yourself.

Never noticed this thread before so thought I'd better jump on board:
I spot neither doors nor windows... How do they feed you?

Dust and spiders my friend.

I can (and have) spend hours just looking around those rooms. So much cool stuff.
Me too Dave! Had cold beer from his fridge too. Happy days :)

I have two
I also have two
I have three. Plus I use my dining room for gaming.

Since moving to Europe I lost my work space, so when I want to paint I use the kitchen table. To facilitate this I made a paint tray. So I guess you can say this is my work bench :) Here are some shots of the assembly in my basement.
The pieces all cut out and the assembly has begun.

Waiting for the glue to dry I started adding paints & other items. There is a piece not attached yet that goes between the two paint holders. It has metal attached so my magnets, etc, can be attached.

Yes, please do. Not only would you're food taste great, it would look fabulous to. ;)
Don't go to Llan Ddewi Brefi, you'll never return.

Hello you LAF folks. Here's a photo of my workbench. Actually it is my desk, a old one that i bought some years ago (not for the purpose of painting miniatures and building scenery as that was during my time-out from the hobby) to a good place to sit and write, read and think. Among other things.
My set-up is modular, yes i guess you can see a familiar theme there, and can be installed or put away within 10 minutes although at the moment, with some terrain being build standing around that could take longer. Daylight is coming in from the right side where the window and the outside world are located. Perhaps i will change that to have the light come in from my front.
The desk provides a good and sturdy surface to work on and it is easy to clean with warm water (no detergent as that damages the wood) and there is plenty of room as the desk is about 2 metres long and 1.20 deep.
In a ideal situation i like to keep to the hobbystuff that i am using to a minimum. So i am planning on a storage space behind me and to the right next another storage space that right behind me when sitting at the desk.
Another plan is to have some shelfs for storage or display of scenery but i have another small room upstairs where i keep the leadpile and the modules that i use to build my gametable.
-
Isn't there someone in Llan Ddewi Bref called Daffyd? ;)
Do keep up, he moved to that London. lol
-
Just jazzed up my work area and added the start of a display case:

The display case on the left hand side is an Ikea Expedit with their glass insert cabinets that I intend to light up with LED strips when I next get paid.

Very nice.
My work area could never look that tidy....

That's the old Wizards of the Coast one from their official D&D or Chainmail line. Lovely piece. I saw it painted up with a bunch of Heresy Hellmites a while back and had to have one.

the "organized mess"
the "surgical"

I got an upgrade! I finally decided to expand my hobby real estate. Now I have more space to clutter up. This is my 3rd workbench. Unfortunately I don't have a photo on my first work bench.
Workbench 2.0 - usually it wasn't this messy. This is me throwing various projects on the desk before cleaning and organizing.
Workbench 3.0 - a new table with enough room for painting and a space for building things. I built a paint rack to hold all of my paints. Plus shelving put above for storage.

Unemployment means I finally had time for a good cleaning. Chaos removed, order restored.

Equipment, spare paint, models etc stored in my cabinets (but that has always been this way)

Very nice! Is there a standard template for paint racks? I'm slowly phasing out the Citadel paints and moving to Vallejo, so I'm wondering if there's a template with recommended material to build or buy a paint rack?
-
No template as such, but they are all in there in numbered order, 1 to 170. The last 30 slots are for Vallejo Foundation, some Panzer Ace Colours and spare bottles I've filled with fav varnishes, decal solutions and GW washes (spare bottle with label from GW stuck on it, very easy, spare bottles are cheap anyway)

Quite the hit financially, but to me as essential as scenery and paint. If my desk was just for painting I'd invest in another rack, but I need space for my pc as well so alas.

Try to post the photo to an online album like flickr or photobucket and lin kto that.

It isn't working due to:
It's linked to a "closed" gallery in FB (ie only your friends can view it).
The actual links doesn't contain any file formats that the image tag can read on this forum.
-
Lots of nice (and a few messy) set-ups here. Here is my addition to the "messy" camp. It's total chaos, which drives me crazy, but obviously not crazy enough to actually get it in some semblance of order (or as an incentive to actually paint more figures instead of just adding more primed ones to the table!).

A little more like mine!

The stuff on the tray are Tamiya dinosaurs, a tip from Dave Phipps, awaiting undercoat.
The tray in front has Westwind Werewolves, a Murch Buddha and an Indian goddess that Dave Bickley gave me, awaiting varnish.

I just finished mixing up another half dozen sets of labelled pots (24 pots in total) plus a few metallics. It's very cathartic, but then there's inevitably a moment where I realise I've forgotten to buy the one colour I need to complete a set! Dagnammit!
Fitting them all on the desk has been suspiciously simple thus far.
-
I can finally see the light at the end of the workbench for my hobby area. Nearly finished boarding then onto filling gaps and painting. I will then fit a 3ft deep desk all the way round and sort out storage and shelves. WIP. Any Suggestions

OK after going through all 36 pages of this wonderful testament to our collective madness I had to give a tour of my creative laboratory so come on in

My man cave occupies the second floor of our home. I have a very gracious wife who encouraged me to have this place to escape into my hobby activities so first off at the top of the stairs
(http://i926.photobucket.com/albums/ad110/warlordfrod/mancave002_zpsbd77ecd3.jpg)
My entertainment area with TV, Dvd, and VHS. Reference, Sci-fi and pulp books on the right. Before the easy chair is my portable paint station
(http://i926.photobucket.com/albums/ad110/warlordfrod/mancave017_zps22566128.jpg)
to the left I have my primary paint table. The shelf just to the left is my unpainted mountian ( ok there is some in boxs under the table as well
(http://i926.photobucket.com/albums/ad110/warlordfrod/mancave008_zps672facc7.jpg)
To the left is the primary miniature storage area 90 percent of that is painted. The book shelves on the right are minis those on the left contain rule books and most of my DVD collection
(http://i926.photobucket.com/albums/ad110/warlordfrod/mancave010_zpsfa9b7c8a.jpg)
At the other end is an area where i set up a 4 x 4 game table when I am going to game. Here I have board games, Miniatures and the majority of my scenery items
(http://i926.photobucket.com/albums/ad110/warlordfrod/mancave011_zpsf7db7157.jpg)
Finally as yo look back towards the stairs you see I store plenty on the DVD shelves. I utilize as much of my space as possible.

Wow, that is some space.......
Thanks. Yes I am fortunate. We moved here just a little over a year and a half ago prior to that everything you see here was in a space 1/3 the size. :o :o :o I hardly had room to sit and paint. The boxs of figs were stacked 6 feet high and 4 deep. It was a pain to dig out anything when I wanted to play a game. In fact I got rid of a bunch when we moved so it was even more then you see here. I know that when we got here and I started to organize my space I kept thinking how could I have had this much stuff in the last house ??? ??? ???. Actually I think my last place was like a magic bag of holding lol

I think it has a lot to do with space and the amount of time you stay in one place. All of my gaming stuff at my house fits in one 15x10 room but I cheat as a lot of my painted figures and terrain are at my gaming club. As it's been running for over 40 years it has a huge hoard.

I've worked my way through this whole thread over the last couple of days. I'm unbelievably jealous. I used to have a nice little area in our utility room where I could paint stuff and leave all my bits and bobs lying around (as it were):
(this was the workbench while I was in the middle of tidying up a WW2 Japanese officer's sword that the previous owner had left in our house when we bought it - no, seriously)
Unfortunately, we bought a tumble dryer and it's replaced the workbench. I now have to get all my stuff out every time I want to paint anything, and then put it away at the end of the evening. Consequently I've done next to nothing for months, except a little bit of a couple of 1/72 Revell kits with the kids.
:(
Still, having seen some of the solutions on this thread, necessity is the mother of invention *and* the handmaiden of harmonious marriage, so I'll come up with some way of doing this in the living room while the lovely Mrs K is watching her girly nonsense.

Oh dear, that's almost Teutonic!

I'm a new guy here and Thanks for showing off your work areas, great inspiration and motivation. I just moved and I'm really in flux, but this was my clean bench at the old house, I had to leave the old desk and so I have to replace it.

Currently on holiday in a Cornish Cottage, so have a temporary workbench:
A bunch of paints in a 4L Really Useful in the window bottom, an upturned Really Useful lid with a cutting mat as my painting area, my daylight lamp and Samsung Tab 3 for reference and playing 6 Music throughout the day.
Eagle eyed readers will notice Carcassone and Guillotine too, for the record I just won the Holiday Carcassone tournament, but Victoria thrashed me at Guillotine.

This is my main workbench, its an 8x10 shed, complete with a/c, heater, laptop, stereo, etc. i paint figures in here, in my garage, I have a second workbench for working on terrain, and larger models, etc. I spend as much time here as possible to keep my sanity. It is my "Fortress of Solitude". If you have the room to build one, I highly recommend it.

Mead... Unless you are a brewmeister of previously unheard skills, I'd rather drink the contents of the cleaning pot.

Nice shack.
In addition to my workplace, I have almost finished readying my garage attic for gaming:

I don't know what they put in the brew you've tasted, but I can assure you that my mead tastes absolutely fine. I can best describe it as close to a cream sherry.
I know some people add hop and/or other bitter tastes, but I prefer the pure version.
I've also tasted destilled mead, which is also not quite to my taste.
-
I'd rather drink the contents of the cleaning pot.
brewing mead is acually not difficult, if you maintain strict hygiene. otherwise it might actually taste like manure, because it turns into it...
I prefer to add lemon or ginger during the brew to spice it up. I've done it many times.
but maybe it is too cold in Gotland....

Am I the only one that prefers spirits you buy in quantities of jerry cans from a shifty farmer?
-
Am I the only one that prefers spirits you buy in quantities of jerry cans from a shifty farmer?
I like most dark spirits, not so much the white/clear ones. Whisk(e)y, dark rum, cognac, etc., but mead is not really a spirit, but a wine (with honey + water substituting the fruit juice).
-

No you are not the only one but first i have to locate the shifty farmer. 8)

I use a fold up desk, a bit like the ones you would have used in school for exams. Its small enough that I can that it takes up little space and I can keep it set up for long peroids of time without it getting in the way to much and simple to put away if you need to reclaim the extra space. I bought it originally for practicing close up magic and card tricks but kind of got bored of it quite quickly.

I've never had a work area as such. I usually paint laying down in bed or on the sofa - always whilst half-watching TV (though I've noticed this causes me some eye strain changing focus!). Left thumb is the palette, and I have a plastic storage box that I keep all my paints in. That just sits under a table until it needs to come out.
I've always been 'ok' with my painting results, but would love a spare room just for hobby stuff.
-
I'm in the process of building and new painting desk, currently this is a mock up. Finished product will have a shelf and Mirror angled backsplash for more light. Right now the desk area is in a basement, the man cave, so natural light is out of the question, so as you can see, I added a 4 foot florescent T8 light fixture, that right now is a little to warm in tone, it was supposed to be a 3600, so I think I need go up one level in warmth, Lowe's has two more levels available. Anyone else have this problem or can recommended any T8 32 watt bulbs would be helpful. I realize that a lot of you are in the UK, but any suggestion would be great.

We are super-fortunate and were able to build our own house. My husband and his dad (and lots of other friends and family) built it from the ground up on nights and weekends. The only gaming related output from that time was a total conversion to digital maps which was daunting, but no painting or modeling.
As soon as we moved into the house, Teshub nailed an old workbench to the yet-unfinished wall, pulled up a card table in front of it, and got back to the hobby.
A few years later, we finished the ground floor and opened up our dedicated multi-purpose playroom. Kids played on one side, we played on the other. The door has a lock, so crafting went on at the counter while there were young 'uns about.
Eventually we put shelving in behind the counters. Paints, brushes and mirrors are on the low shelf, hidden from this view. Mini WIPs are in the plastic drawers on the low shelf, middle. Under the game table are stacked bins with houses, walls, taller terrain pieces. Underneath the counter are also more plastic drawers with completed works. (Completely unrelated and just as completely non-negotiable on the right shelves are my scrapbooking materials.)
Along the wall where the door to the crafting space is located, are the newest editions to the space, pull-away overland maps.
It only takes Teshub about 5 minutes to set up shop for painting and modeling.
We generally keep the work space set up until gameday, when it takes about 5 minutes to put away and pull out the papers and dice boxes (custom made with leftover wood from our kitchen cabinets).
And play:
It helps that we're both gamers. It is how we fell in love almost 25 years ago (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/about-the-site/about-the-author/) after all.
Hope you enjoyed the tour, thanks for looking!

Wonderful space.
Wish I had it. :D
Shows how much you get out of your hobby, and how much you put in.
Thanks for sharing.
sigh. back to my little study for me.

Thanks all!
It's a wonderous space, with tall windows and lots of natural light. The versatility is key, as seen in these shots from preparing for a summer backpacking trip in between 2 game nights : http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=54058.msg829197#msg829197
It can get busy on the counter too, in striking one set to prepare for the next. This was tearing down League of Nil-ith Horn Chronicles #6 (#1 here) (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/lnhchronicles/) and setting up Sagas of the Gautrian Kings #48 (http://swordandsorceryrpg.com/sgk-48/):

We've often talked about how therapeutic our hobby is for us. The inspiration we've gotten from the LAF has fueled many a project over here. I'm happy to share our fun!

Well here's my modest space some time last year.
I was then attempting to balance working from home with getting some figures painted with having a life... Now the works out of the way at least for the immediate future I have two less screens on the desk and a chance at last to do some significant painting ( I Hope) . Not pictured.. the pile of unpainted lead serving as shield in the event of a nuclear blast in London/putting a strain on the rafters below

I finally broke down and bought a commercial workbench that when cleaned up passes the wife requirements for apperances.
I only wish the same could be said of me.....

Where is that gorgeous workbench from, pray tell? :-*
-
It's built by American Workbench, it's their "Ben Franklin" model
http://www.americanworkbench.com/thebenfranklin.html (http://www.americanworkbench.com/thebenfranklin.html)
It has a metal slide out drawer under the worktop which has down a very good job catch all the little parts I drop during assembly - there has been a significant reduction in the number of parts lost under my workbench

Hello Everybody,
Now even a picture of my workbench. After a move to our own house , I actually get a smaller area to live out my hobby.

Alfrik, you're right, but I am looking forward to my summer project.
I will expand my attic to my mencave,

So many wonderful workspaces! However, I absolutely love this one. Something just made my heart jump when I saw it. I guess it's the combination of the computer, a nice corner desk (I love those), and a view to the outside. I can only jealously imagine painting with good music in the background and snow falling outside.
-
My latest project is this top and wheels for my paint storage cabinet and shaker. Since I hate to shake my paints I use this laboratory mixer. You can also see my grey metal parts and storage cabinet, a great craigslist fine.

My painting desk is coming along. I still need to stain it, build some corner shelves, and use piano hinges attached to the metal legs to make some folding side caddies and cork note board. Also, one or two Plexiglas shelves, so I don't bock the reflecting light.

I haven't done any painting in the last week because I tore my paint area apart and did some re configuring. It's still a WIP but the game changer in my eyes is incorporating a peg board into the equation. I've always had an organic philosophy concerning my workspace and it has "evolved" over the years to account for my changing preferences and any new toys I can drudge up to further enjoy and improve my modelling and painting experience.
I included a photo but there is very little on the board. I want to get my dropper style paints up there mostly but have earmarked about 1/3 of the space for tools I commonly use and would rather have on hand than dig for. On the left above the black lamp is a proof of concept paint carrier. It's a length of dowel with 8 wires poking out and heavier gauge hangers on the ends keeping it secured to the board. As I make more and add them in I should be able to have colour groups stocked together so I can bring them off the board right to table as a group when I'm at a project. It looks spartan and ugly at the moment but that's just because it isn't the mess I know and love :) .
With a modular build I can swap things around on the fly without radically changing the space. It's been about 4 years since my last space change and this should last me for some time. Looking forward I think I'd consider resurfacing the workspace to increase the surface area;
-
This is mine. I've since added 20ish Model Air paints, but it looks much the same. I have an ikea rolling cabinet right and under the table for tools, brushes, flock etc.

I finished up my paint desk last fall when I redesigned my office room (bookshelves, computer desk and lateral file are oak and on the other side of the room). The goal was a spot that I could share with my daughter for when she wants to hang with her old man, or if I have a friend come over for "painting night".
The desk is a 2" thick built up oak, 8' in length and 30" in depth. It is finished with oak trim, a few layers of shellac.
I bought a leg set from ikea for the ends and a cabinet for the main support in the center for easy access to my paints, basing material and other modelling supplies. I transferred ALL of my paints to dropper bottles over a couple nights and then made my own paint tray (plus a few more for friends and guests).
All in all, it was kept simple, but I tried to finish it with a bit of class so my wife wouldn't give me too much grief.

Looks pretty good.
No radio/tv/computer for music/movies? And how do you paint with someone next to you. I imagine laughing at a funny story can lead to little mistakes at times.
-
I have a surround sound system so music isn't an issue. I moved the tv into my daughter's room ( no...she isn't spoiled ;D ) but I sit my iPad there sometimes for an occasional flick
-
I'm lucky enough to have a room for painting in. I can't really get a shot of it in one go so I've done a sort of panorama. The table usually has my current project on it, in this case my old west town under construction.

sundayhero, from the label these paints are 'docrafts Artiste All Purpose Acrylic Paint'. I pick them up from a craftshop for about £1.25 to £1.50 a bottle. 59ml in a bottle. I've seen them on eBay too. I use the dark grey as my standard primer for miniatures. There is a very good range of colours and they are very useful for covering large areas when you don't want to use your expensive paint.
However, do be aware, some of them (and it varies) do not cover very well, some do, some don't. Caveat Emptor! ;)
-
Good to know, thank you !
For now I filled this gap in my paint collection with paint samples pots, I'll take a pic tonight. They are about 2.50euros for 75ml, wich is apparently a good price, but the range is limited (since a lot of references are really focused on home improvement instead of miniature warrior or terrain painting lol).

here's a little copy/past article from my blog about my workstation:
This is my work station. This is where I build and paint the models and scenery. I like to keep everything at arms length so I can just sit down and work. My work station isn’t always as tidy as you see it in the pictures. When I start a new project, say a unit, tank or some bits of scenery I try to start with an empty desk but during the project I tend forget my Clean Desk Policy and there are bottles of paint, glue, sprues, etc, etc everywhere and I end up with a working space of about 12”x 12”. I have bought a lot of different hobby tools over the past 10 years and not in this picture is the mountain of stuff I have accumulated to use one day for a special project, a bit of scenery or just can’t part with.
I currently use two types of paint. I still have a lot of citadel paints from the time I did a lot of Games Workshop but in the past 3 years I have made the transition to Vallejo paints. I have about 100 Citadel pots and about 150 Vallejo bottles I use. I have an airbrush that I use for priming and base coating infantry models, vehicles are painted mostly with the airbrush (Harder & Steenbeck evolution silverline) but I use a normal brush for the details on infantry models.
In these pictures you can see I’m doing a lot of Bolt Action. For the past 3 years I have made a couple of gaming tables, boxes full of scenery and 4 different armies. I have a British, US Marines, Germans and Japanese army and all armies range from 1200 to 3000 points. I have two Ikea Detolf cabinets in which I keep some of my painted models. Not really clear in this picture but at the bottom of the cabinets you can see my 40K Orks, my first love so to speak and they are still very dear to me.
-
I cleaned my room so thought I'd take a photo of my work area whilst it was presentable. As you can see things get a little cramped when I'm working on tutorials.

I recently had to downsize; this is the new painting area. Half the table size. Really made me think about what I needed out and ready.

A nice closure to a turbulent period. Now I can actually paint again :)
-
Whoohoo! Trying to do same over here. Care to share the rules?
-
Nothing too difficult tbh.
Look at the mess. Draw a a line across a small part of it (not literally!). Clean that part. Enjoy the moment. Get annoyed by the rest of the mess. Draw another line. Repeat. Do this every time you sit down to surf the web or prep to paint. It only takes 10 minutes max and is super easy to do. I'm finding that now my 2 workstations are cleared, I'm attacking my cluttered cabinets in the same way. 1 part of a shelf at a time. Bin, sell or keep what you find. Repeat.
Simple, childish even maybe. But it works for me ;)
-
Sage advice and a practical approach!

My small place in the basement of my house. Nothing impressive compare to some of you.

I like the vertical storage of ongoing projects. I think I should try to find such sets of drawers!
-
Bin, sell or keep what you find.
No, not another binner. :-(

No, not another binner. :-(
Grimm
Don't worry, the only stuff that get's binned is stuff like plastic pipes and broken household appliances used when I made Necromunda stuff 15 years ago and just kept cause you never know when it comes in handy :) I'd never bin models that will give someone else a bit of joy, I'd rather give them away for free then (and I have done so). Keine panik!
-
Nothing wrong with a quality purge. People are all about selling or giving it away; in my experience a good throw over the balcony is much more satisfying.

I bought them years ago from Habitat (https://www.habitat.fr/) years ago. They unfortunately don't sell them anymore.

Hi - I am so envious of some of these work benches, even the one under the stairs.
I thought I would post a pic of mine for the last 4 years during the majority of the summer.

I am Jealous of your set up, South of France :o

Wait... a right-hand drive van in France? Huh? Don't they drive like normal humans on the continent?
EDIT: OH I see, you're from the UK. You just drove down there. T'was the Peugeot logo which threw me off. DURRRR. lol
-
Don't paint and drive...! ;)

Even more important don't drink and paint.

I don't use a mug for my cleansing water (but often forget my coffee while painting, and it gets cold and stale). Much better to have a glass of mead within reach (but outside elbow reach) lol
-
Von Lucky - thats true, you should see my other painting station that I use for the rest of the summer, this one is luxury. :)
Gamer Mac - I only posted this so that when you see my painting you will realise the difficult circumstances and cut me some slack. ;)
Fram - what do you mean by normal human beings. Just because we are out of step with the rest of the world doesn't make us right.
Argonor - so thats why I can't paint a straight line on a figure lol lol
Dr Zombie - We must have all done that :?
-
I use an old mug with a chip in it for my paint water. I have a couple more to hold my paint brushes. I drink bottled water when painting to keep from making that mistake. Also I have water on hand if I need to thin a paint bottle or ad to my paint water.
-
Love my cup-warmer. It is an essential piece of workbench equipment!
Keeps the old moloko-chai nice and warm while I'm lost in the details. :D
-
I've recently established a spot on the shelf just to the left of my workbench that can hold a pint glass (homebrewing beer means having to work real hard to run out of beer...) or a coffee mug. It's out of elbow range and (importantly!) on the far side of the bench from the container of painting water!
Should post a pic of my current bench soon, it's been a while and I've moved since putting up the last pic earlier on this thread.

Actually, I'm a little jealous. You didn't choose between travel and painting. Good for you! 8)

Since moving from the UK to Wisconsin I've lost my studio space, but have re-imagined the closet in our spare bedroom / den.
I can just close the doors on it and walk away and nobody is the wiser for my mess :)

A walk-in hobby room lol
Very cool - I actually feel myself a bit jealous of your ability to hide away your stuff like that. I do, of course, have my work stations in our study/office/hobby room, which can also be closed off, but I have to share that with the rest of the family, and my stuff is not protected from dust the same way.
-
I can just close the doors on it and walk away and nobody is the wiser for my mess :)
Cool lol
-
That's very similar to what my daughter did in her room for a desk/study area.
Very nice.
-
Not exactly my workspace, but I gave my daughters these as an extra present for Christmas, and hope they will be used for painting the odd mini in between other hobby projects ;)

I have a couple of extra pot-holders WIP in the workshop in the garage (short pieces of lath with a 30mm hole drilled with a paddle drill) - I just need to finish sanding them to a smooth finish.
I wrote a bit about the paint stations on my blog, if anybody should have interest...

This is my "Frankendesk" painting station I made last summer. Its about 90% recycled/scrap wood. The darn varnish has yellowed since these pictures were taken, but its still serving me well.
-
Nice build!
-
That Frankendesk looks pretty sweet! There are times when I wish I could amp the aesthetic of my work table but there is either a project on the go, a rat's nest, or both in progress :-[. Somewhere in the bowels is an old metal hope chest I intend to work over and re-purpose into an upright cabinet but there are too many distractions to make the commitment.
-
I forced myself to shelf projects to build it. I took away my old painting table before I finished it too, that way I had to finish it or I couldn't paint.
-
Greetings!
This is my first-ever post here, so not sure if it will post properly.
Perhaps my best project ever. After this photo was taken, I proclaimed to the project, "LIVE"! Suddenly, it woke, stood, stretched, and trotted away! :o
Oh, and that's my workbench. :D
-
Welcome, what a nicely organised set up.
Can we have one after the beast awoke? ;)
-
Very nice! I have two sun lamps on my desk too. My boss sleeps there as well :) .
-
Welcome on board Dr.J.Ph.D
I cannot believe all you guys have such organised workbenches. Are those just for the camera? My workarea looks like a paint shop that has been hit by a tornado and then looted.
-
@ Dr. Zombie
I only post photos of my work area when it's in good order lol. Projects pile on top of projects and the mess builds. A cleaning typically occurs when the discarded tools/paint/model parts start to encroach on the "working" part of the table and it interferes with work flow. The camera remains in macro settings and focuses on miniatures when the place is a mess :). A clean up usually get everything back to where it belongs so the "clean" windows happen; Just not for very long. A cluttered bench keeps Goblyn away from the lamps and the paint water :P.
-
Well in the spirit of full disclosure here I my work area. I have taken a picture as is. So no cheating and cleaning it up first.

-
Your candor is greater than mine DZ :) . Maybe in a couple days (I've posted before but in the intervening year my space has "evolved") but nothing wrecks my work area like terrain projects. Rather than the bomb simile it's more like a cannonball mashing up my nice tall ship. Balsa splinters and offcuts everywhere and my rotter of a cat ran off with the cap for my glue pot.
-
I have build myself a new workbench for my Styrodurcutter and a permanent setup for my airbrush. Here is a picture of my hobby room in the basement:

-
That is a nice looking setup.
-
Thanks!
-
I wish I had some much space. Great place.
-
Thank you
-
@tomrommel1
Oh that looks awesome! I wish I had the space to separate painting from build/assembly. The crossover between the two is where most of my messes and disorganization begin :) .
-
That was the case with my previous set up too , therefore I got rid of a sofa , which was in the room before but never used, to free some space for a second workbench.
-
I cannot believe all you guys have such organised workbenches. Are those just for the camera? My workarea looks like a paint shop that has been hit by a tornado and then looted.
Unless something is drying, I tend to clean up after after evey paint or build session. My OCD demands it. Usually the only thing on my desk are WIP.
-
I think getting dust (whether from cleaning up plastic on other projects or generally not touching something for weeks) means that I do the same (doing a major clean up right now actually).
-
Unless something is drying, I tend to clean up after after evey paint or build session. My OCD demands it. Usually the only thing on my desk are WIP.
I'm the same. Clean, clean, clean - as often as I can. All the paints go away, I keep a journal of what colours I use for reference in case I need more or whatever, like adding a unit or hopping between projects.
Dust is the bane of my existence and I clean frequently.
-
Yeah, paint is just paint on my bench; If it's dry it isn\t an issue. The modelling to a lesser degree and worse than anything else terrain building is just ghastly. I dont have any choice but to clean frequently doing this. I'm concerned that if I don't all my models will end up with static grass hair implants :P .
-
Lately I flow from one project into the other.
Meaning I prep one project before finishing the first. It realy keeps the ritme going.
This means I rarely clean my painting station. I've noticed, the less i need to do before I can start painting, the more I tend to want to start painting.
My paint station is made to close and be out of sight (it's made in a bookcase in the living room).
In practice it only gets cleaned up with birthdays and other festivities when I expect lots of kids running around).
My own kids are so used to it, they never bump their head on it.
-
Current workbench, as of a couple days ago.
I've barely painted anything in about four months so I cleared ALL of the current half-painted/primed figures off, tucked them out of sight, and rebooted with different figures.
It seems to have worked, I've applied more paint to more figures in the last four days or so than I've managed since Halloween.
(for bonus geek points, the cocktail glass on the left has a d20-shaped whiskey stone in it...)
Related blogpost, in which I blather on a great length about the above: http://www.warbard.ca/2017/03/02/in-which-painting-mojo-is-rediscovered/

And you've just disqualified yourself from BSC :D
Good to hear you've got your mojo back.

And you've just disqualified yourself from BSC :D
Good to hear you've got your mojo back.
If you mean the troll in the top left of the photo, he was intended to be part of the Build Something Contest but I wound up submitting just the Blomp without the flying stand because the fully assembled Blomp was too heavy for the flying stand as designed!
Sad Troll does not currently have employment and was not part of my BSC submission. :(
-
@wirelizard
I can relate to your mojo blog post. I was in a 40k/warhammer rut for years and my painting felt like a chore. I was never much of a player but painting the same thing the quality of figures being irrelevant is stifling and eventually feels like a rut. For a few years now I've been broadening my painting horizons ( And I blame YOU Lead Adventures for corrupting me and growing my lead pile :D ) and regularly try to change up the style of models be it era, sculpt style, genre; Anything that presents new challenges or allows me to just experiment with a piece I haven't before. I recently revisited some of those GW figures and I find that I have a new found respect for them and appreciate character they possess rather than dwelling on the drudgery. While I lament the awful messes I make with my terrain building efforts it;s another welcome part of the modelling world newly discovered that I can explore.

Here's how my space looks now. A bit different from the pic in the very first post. :-)

The receipts are postal receipts from eBay sales that I've not received feedback for yet , you never know if you going to need them.
It gets bloody cold in that place, so I need the dog blanket for my knees :-)
-
Nice man cave Steve!
-
I to have taken to painting with a blanket over my legs. Not so much for warmth. But because I have lost count of the number of pants I have ruined with paint/glue spills over the years. Also it helps to catch all the things I drop.

I use an old kitchen apron for that reason

Last weekend I finally finished my workbench after some (long time) preparation :D. I moved to a bigger appartment one and a half year ago and had a spare room available.

Excellent tidy up and a good looking paint holders :D
-
My workbench is being relocated, but only from one side of the room to the other!
I'll get some natural light - that's a window top right - and ultimately more space to make a creative mess in! The short term disruption has me twitchy, though, especially with LPL running right now!
If you play the CSI "Enhance... enhance... enhance..." game on this photo you might be able to make out my next five LPL11 entries all lined up on the shockingly clean desk surface!

Looking good WireLizard. Scary thing is I recognize several of the figures as Pulp Figures with no magnifying. Seems I have some of them staring at me from my not so clean paint desk... lol

Decided to spend the last week of the summer holiday doing a complete overhaul of my hobby room......
Went from looking like this:
To this:
I sold off one of my 2 desks, removed as much empty (not that it ever was empty) horizontal space as possible as this seems a magnet for attracting crap. I was lucky that I found my fifth secondhand Alex cabinet on the day I was putting my furniture back into the room so that added enough storage space for painted stuff to keep me going till retirement I hope. Threw out a lot of stuff and the cabinet toppers and small sets of drawers beside me will go up for sale on the local fleabay, joined by a ton of kits and older models I have no more use of.
Yes, it is very clean, and you don't see any paintpots or anything. I don't even have a display case or anything. Everything is behind closed doors. Leaving it out on the table just seems to bring out the clutter monster in me and affects my mood a lot, and I need this space for studying as well. I know it's a tad OCDish but it works for me. And my wife is over the moon with the change so that counts for something. Now to keep it this way. :D
Tons more of info about the rest of the room on my Blog btw >> http://20mmandthensome.blogspot.nl/2017/08/d-day-7.html

Nice job! Just cleaning up my room after dumping the GenCon acquisitions. Sometimes you just need to tidy up to get motivated to paint again.

This does seem like a FINE way of getting to know each other; i.e., what speaks more about the inner being of a person that their workplace...other than an ex wife that is.
This is my main work station:

Nothing really surprises me there. The only question I have is why did you board up the back of the closet? Sure, Jadis can cause some fear, but her powers don't have much use here. (Unless it's to stop you from tempting fate and travelling there?)

It's not really a closet. It's a wardrobe, hand made by Cap'n John & lined with cedar...pretty impressive in person.
Thanks for the reply, von Lucky. It's nice to see a familiar/friendly face over here.

Thanks, Treebeard. I am glad you like it. The few females that have viewed the room have never returned...so much for a social life.

It's been awhile since someone posted here so I thought I'd throw in a post about some "reclaimed" space. Next to my gaming room in the basement thee is a small 8ft x 8ft bump out that I finally decided to clear out. I used to have my HO scale layout in that room (my prior hobby to wargaming). Anyway, as part of a de-cluttering decree from my lovely, yer fierce wife I finally decided to pack up the railroad stuff and see about re-using that space.
After some thinking and approval from management of my plan the room was cleared up with one half being used for storage and the other half being used for a scenery workbench.
The right side will be used to store my sectional terrain panels:

The storage racks were built out of scrap plywood
(https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kYqX6861FVo/WxpNBmJTFFI/AAAAAAAAKJg/ZHqkvofnDOc3KqyNDoWWXl4MDW0T1NkbQCLcBGAs/s320/7OlgWS7pRK%252BjV98TlCxKzA.jpg)

I've also got some 2ft x 2ft panels which will take up the rest of the space to the left of the panels.
The other half of the room will be a scenery workbench and have storage for all my scenting materials. Its the first time I've gotten all this stuff in one place, so hopefully I'll be a bit more efficient and not re-buy stuff because I can't find it. My lack of organization and the convienance of Amazon Prime same day delivery "may" have resulted in more than a few duplicates..

And finally, a shot of the workbench being used for it's first gaming scenery project - staining some Lunesdargent Egyptian themed dungeon tiles. These will be used in my upcoming 2018 Historicon games "DAK & Dragons" and it's modern equivalent "SOCOM & Sorcery"

In the light of my paint shaker disaster I thought I best post an update on my cave, if only to show I have done something right recently ... ;D
I have been in a bit of a hobby funk for the last year or so, as accumulated detritus had so taken over that any thought of being productive was quickly extinguished by the hours of cleanup required before even starting.
So radical action was needed, the 'lead wall' was moved to the garage (after a solid week of cleaning it out), the two 1.2M Ikea 'Jerker' desks met a similar fate and 5.4M of pallet racking was installed. I had some special extra legs made for the racking so that the second shelf on each unit could extend out as a workbench, maximizing shelving and bench space.
The whole cave, computer and painting benches on the left, casting and construction on the right and my handy dandy tool trolley at the rear.
Lower shelf with computers ...
With all the extra bench space I needed more lighting, so I got some high CRI LED strip from store.yujiintl.com (http://store.yujiintl.com) and made a strip and modified a couple of 'death rays' out of some Ikea lamps ...
The result is just about the perfect lighting setup for painting, the following shot shows the lights on with two 'triple bright' fluro's on the right and the LED's on the left ...

Quite a nice pallet in your room. Lots of cheery sunlight too. Not at all like the dungeon I paint in. :)

Man I love that lighting by Joe something that I feel I cannot have enough of, and something that I feel I do not have enough yet.
At any rate recently started cleaning up my gaming room, thought it was worth some pics.
Here are pics of my table work area. It is sad that it still looks a bit cluttered and yet I know it is the most organized, and the cleanest it has ever been... :(
I should have taken a before and after picture so that one could appreciate the difference, suffice to say the pile of stuff stacked on top of the desk has been reduced such that one can actually see the table top.
These are all the pictures of my workbench, but if you want to see the gaming room proper, which contains the work area, feel free to follow the link.

It's lot easier to get good lighting now, these were not available when I got my LED strips:

Share with some mates and the cost is US $30-$40 for 2 bulbs that will last ~25,000 hours. (I recommend the 10W 5000K)
Combine them with the ubiquitous IKEA Tertial lamp:
https://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/50355442/ (https://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/50355442/)
Which are dirt cheap and can be mounted horizontally or vertically via clamp or screws and you can get a great high CRI setup for US $50-$60 plus postage.

one of my earliest, and most vivid, modeling memories comes from the cover of a 1930s Model Railroader magazine. it was a picture of a brass locomotive in O scale sitting on a kitchen table. on the corner of the table was a little clamp on vise, and an eggbeater style hand drill. various files, screwdrivers and a hammer rounded out this fellow modeling kit.
that dining room table is your place of honor!

I am working on setting up my work area now. Went to IKEA to buy new furniture. I bought a Malm desk and two book shelves to go on either side. I am now in the process of looking for organizational items to go on top of the desk and figuring out the lamp. I was going to buy the swing arm one from IKEA, but they changed the rating on the wattage of bulbs it takes and I want to up bulb them with LED daylight bulbs to help with photography. The IKEA ones don’t meet the power rating I want for Wattage.
If you want to check out my planning process about this workstation in development, check out... https://mustcontainminis.com/2019/01/planning-the-perfect-hobby-room-for-miniatures.html

Remember, that wattage rating is actually a heat rating based on incandescent bulbs. If you are using led or fluorescent bulbs, look at the actual wattage rather than the equivalent wattage. A “60 watt” led bulb is as bright as a 60 watt incandescent. If you look at the small print, it actually uses 12 watts or something.

Thanks BillChuck.
I ended up using 15W LED bulbs in up to 60W lamps. :)

I've finally decided to go ahead and arrange a dedicated workbench that isn't a plastic table hidden away somewhere, and I wanted to go ahead and share my progress.
I have my painting equipment in a house in the country, rather than where I normally live. The disadvantage is that I only paint when I go there, which is about twice a month. The advantage is that being away from the computer and the Internet makes painting a quiet, thoughtful experience, so I'm pretty happy with keeping my stuff there. I've been considering clearing a dedicated space for a hobby room, and this weekend I took the plunge and started the process. This meant clearing out old, unused furniture and clutter, and assembling a wooden desk I had acquired when my company moved to a Wework. I wanted to document the change here, so I took a few pictures;
I'm very happy with how it turned out, particularly the wooden finish of the table and how it seems to match so nicely with those Hobbyzone modules. I hope to refine the space over time.

Looks great and very organised 8)

Only kidding. There’s nothing like a lovely clean, tidy workstation to make one want to do modelling and painting :)

Haha! But alas, I am only a mediocre artist, so no chaotic messes for me, yet.
Only kidding. There’s nothing like a lovely clean, tidy workstation to make one want to do modelling and painting :)
There's a lot of truth in this statement, for me. The previous incarnation of my workbench was very messy, and all it made me do was sit and stare at the disaster in desperation. When the previous bench was first starting out, I cranked several hours of work in it. So I guess I need the space and the sense of empty in order to be able to work.

Just got these lights, thought I'd share. From a brand called CEP? Chinese shop says it's french but I don't know.

Link?

Well you would think that would be easy but ...
This is their website and the 2 lamps i bought arent on it: https://www.cepos.fr/
Gonna attach a screenshot of the actual product from Taobao (alibaba) but the link option only works for someone who also has the app.
If anyone can find it on another shopping site please do share, this is all I got o_o

gosh yes, @ Hammers, and well done @ Chrismck - definitely something to aspire to ...

Tidied up my work area at the weekend to get some order into things. Cupboard at the bottom holds the lead/plastic pile, the cupboard at the top is for reference books.

A very neat and organized workbench. Fitting your entire lead pile into one cabinet is impressive. Mine sprawls about on multiple shelving units. lol

Greetings! I'm fairly new to this august institution, but here's my workbench. Used to be an attorney's office. He left the furniture, shelves, etc. Unpainted minis on the left. Spare paint/bases/brushes on the credenza. Beer steins, and empty cigar boxes and whiskey bottles on shelves behind me. The old tackle box has since been replaced by a proper paint rack. I must say, that chair is VERY comfy...
In addition, the game room is in another room, as is painted minis storage and a cigar/bourbon lounge...
-
I got rid of my stepped paint racks for both Vallejo and Foundry, replaced with ones from Warbases to give me more space on the table.
-
Nice! You must have pretty good colour vision,I have to be able to read the labels ;)
-
I put the most regularly used directly in front of me but I am having to learn where most of the Foundry paints are.

This has been an awful quiet thread for a while. Surely there are hundreds more workspaces to be showcased. Always so inspiring seeing how other people work and seeing different set ups!!

Did a deep clean of my desk. I ave not worked in almost 2 years and my desk was still cluttered with stuff from my last job. As it is unlikely I'll work ever again (at this moment) and the kids summer holiday is coming up, it's a great time (ha!) to do a deepclean. All work related stuff is now gone, PC to the side,WIP cabinet of stuff I need to finish just slides underneath the desk when not needed. Now to keep it actually clean and not cluttered....that be nice.

This is very aesthetically pleasing. I love a tidy desk. I have a similar set up except its dark wood instead. I'll need to post a picture up soon!

My little slice of happiness. Great as a double set up. Got drawers underneath to store paint and tools.

Also have a cupboard that is stacked floor to ceiling with storage boxes full of stuff but I like to try and keep a pretty tidy workspace. However compared to some of my friends a cupboard is not actually that bad 😂😂

At least it all still fits in a cupboard... ;D
