It's been a week now since a friend and myself ran our game "The Petite Race For Africa" at out yearly war-gaming convention in Sydney, MOAB (Mother of All Battles).
I'm happy to say the event was a great success and enjoyed by all our players, of which we had the full complement of 8 per day sign up. Unfortunately not one Aussie LAFer could play, which is always a great disappointment for me, as I'd love for Aussies LAFers to have a much better presence of getting together and playing some games.
I will use this topic to post some pictures of the day and what went on during the prep.
Firstly this is the blurb we made up about the scenario:

And here are some staged shots I took to entice the punters to sign up for the event.

I will post some more pics and details of the actual game being played soon.
-
Saw your blog on Tembe construction, now the game pics make me more envious.
-
Fantastic, I especially love the tembe. I'm looking forward to the game pics.
-
A lovely looking setup but the Tembe is the ace in the pack its looks great.
-
Thanks gents. I will post some better pics of the tembe.
-
I like it, I love it, I want some more of it!
-
Goats? Good. Rhino? Better. Overall visual? Best. No pressure to top that in the further reports however. Unless you like pressure. :D
-
Lovely pics.
Lucky guys who get to play in your games.
-
The main terrain piece required for the game was a slaver tembe, which the premise of the entire scenario centered upon.
I spent far more time than I'd hoped in the planning stages of the tembe because I knew it was going to be the focal of everyone playing and I also needed it to be as functional as possible.
There are a lot of examples of other people's efforts in tembe building right here on the Lead Adventure Forum and that was a great source of inspiration, and where I ultimately got my design from.
The materials I used in the build were foam-board for the walls, a mdf base, real twig for the palisade gateways, along with the classic towel for roof thatching.

Looks brilliant :-*

Splendid work Frank 8)
-
Great to see you posting again. Superb efforts. The Tembe is wonderful. :-*
-
Wow! That does look like it's going to be one very beautiful, interesting and fun game! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
I love the 'layered' thatching on the building (sorry, I've forgotten what they are called). You can tell that the thatching has been given the correct amount loving care and attention to make it look more realistic
-
Great set up, Frank. Very colourful, and what a superb centrepiece for your game 8)
-
That's really special. I like the straw on the floor. I'm going to have to steal that idea.
-
Thank you all for the kind comments
Great to see you posting again. Superb efforts. The Tembe is wonderful. :-*
Yes Nick it has been some time - I'm afraid I have been a victim of posting on Facebook rather than my beloved LAF - something I thought I'd never succumb to. :'(
-
It's a long way to Tembe-rary...
...silly me... :D

The game included encounters scattered around the table for players to discover and/or stumble upon. Instead of just using numbered discs I chose to represent the encounters with little skull totems. Each encounter token had a different number of skulls, one through eight, with each indicating a specific encounter. When a player got close they triggered the encounter which meant that usually the token was removed and other figures put on the table.

-
Like the idea, a lot - though not sure I'd go with the skulls personally. Might go with pots and/or rocks, etc. but only because it gives greater versatility across more periods. But I do like yours, certainly fits the game at hand.
-
Neat idea - suitably noted as I bought the Citadel Skulls box the last time I was in England.
Also FifteensAway comment is useful and I might vary what is on the encounter bases to keep the gamers guessing.
-
Well done, such things are much better than bright tokens.
An Aztec campaign I played in required keeping a tally of Spanish prisoners.
We made sacrificial skull racks that worked like an abacus. A lot nicer than dice/tokens.
-
Thanks all.
I chose skulls because the game was far from historical and the counters were meant to represent a possible threat or danger. I also wanted them to double as encounter markers for something else I'm working on where the skulls would be even more appropriate.
Another consideration was quickly being able to identify the number of skulls while managing 8 players. Their whiteness stood out remarkably well and were easy enough to identify quickly in the craziness that was the game.
-
Lovely work :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Some very inspiring work
-
It's a great idea and well executed. 8) 8) 8)
I'm all for this kind of stuff as i feel cards, markers (unless mini markers) all distract from the look and feel of the game.
-
Thanks gents.

Totally agree Atheling. We were forced to use counters for in game mechanics but tried to keep them to the smallest size possible.
-
Here are some of the animals we used, mostly as part of encounters, for the game. When a player stumbled upon an encounter token, the token would be removed and replaced with figures representing the actual encounter. In this way players couldn't judge the level of danger by simply looking at the figures and making an educated guess on the degree of danger until it was too late.

Fourteen lovely animals and a couple of "booby" traps. And, what the heck, a pink zebra!? There must be a story behind that and I can't award any wildlife points until we know that story! I mean it, I do. Do tell, please, all about the pink zebra. :o
-
Excellent stuff Frank :-*

Thanks gents.
Fourteen lovely animals and a couple of "booby" traps. And, what the heck, a pink zebra!? There must be a story behind that and I can't award any wildlife points until we know that story! I mean it, I do. Do tell, please, all about the pink zebra. :o
The elusive pink zebra wandered around the table at random. It was one of the goals of the hashish smoking Ruga-Ruga to catch him.
"Last night you dreamt of the “Zebra King”, a magnificently wise beast that whispered in your ear that you will achieve great things. You have more questions to ask him – if only you could find him."
If another player chanced upon the pink zebra instead they received a card saying "What pink zebra???". It produced some pretty funny moments.
-
Story told, points duly awarded. Let's go with 76, 5 x 14 + 6, works out. And, see, I told you there was a story to that zebra! :o Like the story, clever.
Now, can you top War in 15 mm's score? You'll need A LOT more animals for that! And, no, I haven't totaled his score but it is a BIG number (around 105 animals, maybe more, in his Africa gallery which is in 28 mm, and more that he didn't include in the gallery!).
I'm at 174 so far for my plains of Africa, painted (though still needing work on the bases for most). Many, many more to paint, like hundreds. But I'm a bit bonkers for the subject - for those who don't already know that. 15 mm helps, a lot.
And that East African plains project of mine is one of two itches that really needs scratching!
-
Thanks for the points Fifteens - but I fear I need a lot more animals. 105 you say?!?!
I made some flags for the game which I thought some others may want to use. The FFL flag is probably not historically correct but was fine for what we needed.

They certainly would.
Great job Frank. :)

Great looking flags.
Thank you for making and posting them for others to use.

Thanks guys - my pleasure. :)

Found a moment to save those pretty flags, thanks Furt!

So I fully intended to post up pictures of the actual game in October 2019. Well I woke up this morning and it's February 2020!!! :o

Well, at least you had a nice, LOONG nap! lol
Is that rhino flatulence or is that brute putting on his after burners? :o :D
Very nice. Thanks for sharing. Oh, and just what are those baboons playing with? I can't quite make it out - some sort of small antelope like a dik-dik perhaps?
-
Amazing looking game :o brilliant stuff.

Great looking, & you seem to be having fun.

Spiffing Stuff, makes a man wanna pack up his elephant gun and head to the Dark Continent forthwith.

Ok, read the notes under the pictures this time.
I can see the boats were specially made.
Oh well.

Thanks for the comments all. :)

Flatulence - hmmm - could be another scenario? That is my trademark "speed dust" actually, patented by me. :D
The baboons have a TNT plunger - it is a little hard to see.

The boats are actually designed by my mate on a laser cutter. He would happily sell you some but we are in Australia. I can put you in touch with him if you like. He sold about a dozen over the weekend we played.

Well, you might want to read up on just what rhinos do from their tale end. More hazardous than at first blush, if blush it can be called. I'd call it - stay away, stay far, far away - from that end of the beast.

That's pretty sound advice I'd say. :)

Absolutely beautiful table and kit! Your handmade terrain is exemplary, very motivational, certainly looks the part. I bet the game was huge fun to play as well as run. I will check out your blog post.
PS, thanks for posting those flags. How do you put the waves behind the flags?

It was really exhilarating (and exhausting) to run, but there was 2 of us running it thankfully. Everyone who played enjoyed themselves and appreciated the effort we put in. We really had an excellent group of players.
The waves in the flags are done with Photoshop magic. Just combining flags with a wavy cloth texture actually - easy if you know how, probably pretty difficult if you don't. I could help you out JBaumal if you need some specifically done.

There is an AAR from one of the players, Paul, who attended the game with his son and his best mate. There are some great pictures and a good account of what they experienced on the day here:
http://tasmancave.blogspot.com/2019/11/moab-part-1-petite-race-for-africa.html (http://tasmancave.blogspot.com/2019/11/moab-part-1-petite-race-for-africa.html)
Paul has played in a couple of our events now and is a most enthusiastic participant and all around great bloke. Players like these make all the months of hard work that went into organising the event so worthwhile. Paul had the unenviable job of running the Zanzibar Slavers which must have felt like having the entire 7 other players against him. He managed to buy a passage to freedom and escape the tembe.
Paul's son played the Ruga-Ruga and was a very wily and cunning opponent, especially for a younger player. He almost came away with the prize.
