Title: Wings of Glory models suitable for Verdun 1916?
Post by: James Morris on December 28, 2015, 06:48:34 PM
I'm thinking of adding a couple of 1/144 models to my 12mm Verdun set up - either fighters or scouts would be fine, and ideally one French, one German.  The Wings of Glory range appeals as they are ready assembled and painted, but are there any planes that are suitable for mid 1916?

These two resources (the second you'll need to be signed up to the WoG forums to download) are useful:
http://www.theaerodrome.com/aircraft/fighter_timeline.php
http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=848

Not sure what's in the WoG range, as I only collected WoW stuff.

The 3d Print company Shapeways has literally hundreds of 1/144th scale WWI planes available.

Getting back to the original request, for mid (summer) 1916 I'd recommend a Nieuport 11 and either a Fokker D.II or Halberstadt D.II.

The Eindecker was around until September 1916, but was struggling. Its dominance of late 1915/early 1916 was stopped by the arrival of the Nieuport 11 which outnumbered the Eindeckers by March 1916. The British had the F.E.2b,  Airco DH.2 and Sopwith 1½ Strutter at this time.

However, looking at the Wings of Glory range:

The options are limited (if you're intention is a ready to use from the box option). So I'd go with a SPAD S.VII and an Albatros D.II. Both are late summer 1916 and into early 1917.

Von Lucky, many thanks, that's exactly what I was after! I now have to decide between getting ready made models suitable for late summer 1916, or biting the bullet and constructing and painting a couple of earlier types...
Really appreciate the detailed help. I know a little about WW1 planes but not enough!

An Eindecker and F.E.2b (British, not French) would be suitable for the first few months of Verdun. So there's that option. Or just get all four aircraft. :)
