Title: Modern Pulp Campaign
Post by: Duke Donald on 29 April 2017, 09:53:39 AM
I decided to organise a campaign for my wife and children. I'll use the Pulp Alley rules but will make a few changes towards light RPG. The scenarios will be primarily cooperative and not particularly bloody. Obviously, a few cultists, maniacs or monsters will die, but that should be fine by my wife. The classical pulp period also doesn't appeal too much to my children. As such, it will be contemporary settings.

This first post will act as a table of content if and when the thread eventually grows. In my next post, I'll show the first batch of minis. I might also move the house I'm currently building from the Workbench section to this thread.

These are the first minis. I'm not sure I'll use them all, but I haven't been painting in ages and needed to refresh my paintbrush skills. In particular, I've always struggled with skin and hair. Thus, I chose minis that would allow me to get a bit of practice.

I also wanted to test clear bases. I'm a bit on the fence with them. I see pluses and minuses. They give a clean look and I like the fact that I could have every single mini in my collection on the same bases. The downside is that they look a bit artificial and some minis can be a pain to base. I'd be interested in feedback on them as I'm still not 100% I'll continue with them.

Anyway, the first batches of minis below:

Modern girls in swimsuits. Not sure, I'll use them for gaming but I needed some practice.

Your painting looks great. Who makes all of these minis? I don't recognise them but I particularly like the Granny with a shotgun. Also, the girl with the speargun would be very useful in my James Bond game. Looking forward to seeing more of your campaign.

Thanks!

The girls are all from Golem miniatures; link: https://golem-miniatures.com/en/. They are resin and fairly tall (32mm to the eye). The quality of the sculpting and casting is remarkable but they are very delicate. I replaced the resin speargun with a metal wire. I also replaced the barrel of the Uzi, with a silencer made of a wire and a thin tube of styrene.

The granny in the last picture is from Reaper https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/Chronoscope/sku-down/50235. In addition of being cool, she comes with an extra six free cats. She's 27-28mm to the eyes. I've replaced her walking stick with a shotgun from the Warlord plastic female survivors, http://www.warlordgames.com/project-z-female-survivors/, which is a fantastic resource for modern weapons.

The fish priest is also from Reaper https://www.amazon.com/Priest-Heaven-Legends-Miniature-Reaper/dp/B01LVXXJKS. He's huge (34-35 mm to the eyes!) I just thinned his sword and replace the shaft of the lance with a metal wire.

The last one is Alfred Pennyworth (Batman's butler). He's a limited edition mini from Knights miniatures, which came with the Batman game rulebook. Knight's miniatures are all over the place in terms of scale. He's one of the smaller minis, about 33mm to the eyes.

This is looking great! THANKS so much for posting. And I hope we get to see more.  :D

Have you decided on stats/abilities for the characters?

I'm afraid I have a lot left to do before dealing with stats/abilities ... :?

Anyway, some slow progress. I've painted a few minis, and have also rebased them all on thinner clear bases.

Duke Donald, nice minis a GREAT ideas! MULP ("Modern Pulp") campaigns are really FUN!

Those bikini girls are perfect for the underwater infiltration of the villain's lair, and giving the Old Cat Lady a shotgun makes her an ever more dangerous foe!   :D

EDIT: Clear bases are the way to go IMHO!  ;)

I wasn't fully sold on the thicker clear bases I tried first, but I like the thinner bases and feel I won't go back to standard basing.

Though, there are some downsides with clear bases. Some minis are an absolute pain in the neck to base. They are also unforgiving. With the clear bases, there's nothing that detracts from any weakness in the paint job.

Another two minis removed from the paint queue. I'll resume working on scenery for a while.

The anatomically-challenged concept of some manufacturers may work ok for a certain kind of female minis (with that Image Comics "let's get super sexy" look), but the extra long legs on that male figure is just awful! But you managed a very nice paintwork on all minis, CONGRATULATIONS!  ;)

I don't think the man is from golem miniatures, at least he's not listed on their site - where's he from? I actually need a lanky playboy-type body like that.

It's a Knights Models mini <https://knightmodels-store.com/epages/afaa2a23-c31d-4ae6-b1cd-12757513fd3b.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/afaa2a23-c31d-4ae6-b1cd-12757513fd3b/Products/35DC156>. I have mixed feelings about the whole range. They're silly expensive and the sculpting and in particular the casting is very hit and miss. The scales are also all over the place.

This one's relatively short for a Knights Models mini but still quite tall (~34mm to the eyes). The casting on this one was also very good, but the sculpting is not as good as expected for such an expensive mini. He's lanky but his proportions are quite reasonable. The legs are just slightly shorter than half the whole height, and the head is 1/7 of the body, which might look extreme for a mini, but actually wouldn't qualify for "ideal model proportion" in real life.

I've just edited my last post in order to be fair with the companies involved!  ;)

I think the Chappie in this picture looks like Lord Peter Flint! The Warlord from Warlord comics! Lovely paintwork on all! :-*

Ogdru-Jahad, by Carnevale. They sold the range and it's back for sale, but I forget who carries it now.

BTW: TT Combat has a great line of MULP scenery as well!  ;)

I bought some Carnevale minis a while ago and didn't realise they were still available through TT Combat after the company went bust. That's good news as some of the minis are cool and TT combat offer them for a decent price (actually cheaper than I bought them). Though, unless they redid the moulds and these are new casts, I'm a bit worried the quality might be suboptimal. The last Carnevale minis I bought were poorly cast and require a lot of work to look half-decent.

The overpriced-ness of Carnevale was in part why I failed to buy them earlier. If they're cheaper now, I might well pick up some fish-folk, finally.
