Malamute, Jimbibbly and I are resurrecting our Drug Cartel project, a 28mm skirmish between rival drug cartels, government forces and DEA agents in San Malador, Columbia(ish).

More words and pictures to follow.

And of course, I'm the terrain monkey for this project  ::)

First things first is the runway and hanger. Just over four foot of runway and a nearly complete hanger. Planes on the way as well and I already have some scatter terrain that's almost ready to show  :D

what era or years are you planning on playing?
Is I supposed to be Colombia or a no name location?

I was planning on useing some of my late war US army for a no name south American Nation in the 50s, with French indo-China paras as troops from a neighboring nation. Or I some one comes out with 50s Brits, they could be involved too.

If your leaning to more 70s or 80s, i might try some of the under fire minatures west Germans.
Could also always go the route of TAG us Vietnam figs too.

It's a small country that borders Colombia, called San Bibbliador.   The capital of San Malador and the costal resort of Costa Bibblencia are notable kidnapping tourist hotspots.

It was discussed at one of the Woking BLAM's but never got any further (apart from Mark buying figures  lol).

All self cut of course  ;) MDF though but don't tell anyone  lol

You won't be able to tell once it's complete.

Just finished watching Narcos... Great series - but grim times :? Can see the appeal of the 1970's/80's setting though...
The hangar looks brilliant.

You'll be able to use some of San Antonio de Bejar for the Narcos' haciendas too  ;)

Looking forward to seeing this develop.  I recall the original mention of this.  5 years ago?  :o

Close but no cigar!  Copplestone Trooper Officer (FW35): https://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/prod.php?prod=23

The TAG range has a number of possibilities for various factions in the Up Country ('Nam), African Irregular and Modern western civilian and corporate ranges: http://www.theassaultgroup-shop.co.uk/ultra-modern
Including a bald bloke in shades on the phone: "Si Senor, the penthouse has unrivalled views of the beach"  :D

Spectre Miniatures may have some, though most would be too modern: https://www.spectreminiatures.com/

The hangar looks good.  Very tempting to build one if some of the components were available somewhere....
No idea where I would store it though.

This is likely too big for what you have in mind... (Length: 16".  Wingspan: 12".  Height (To top of tail): 5")

A few suggestions, take what you want from them.

The most climactic period of the drug wars in Colombia were the mid-eighties through to the early '90s. That's yer classic Medellin cartel, Cali Cartel period. El Patron, the bombings etc and also the most active period for the yanquis as well. Fear not, plenty of big porn moustaches. In fact, there still are to this day. I know this is 'loosely based on' ( a bit like Narcos) Colombia but Colombia in the late eighties is a good start point.

The Colombian Army at the time was wielding G-3s and mostly wore a leopard spot camo, in the nineties they moved into US woodland uniforms and started sporting Galils. That said they received a shit load of US weapons, M16s, M60s etc and the SF and elite intervention and anti-narcotics brigades tended to use M16s. Of course a scenario  'based on..' means you could use anything Western. Outside of Peru and contemporary Venezuela, you won't find any Eastern bloc weapons in use by the security forces. The national police would tend to OG uniforms and favoured an odd sort of bush hat with one side pinned up.

The TAG Vietnam range Special Forces would be a good choice. Another option might be Parkfield but on the whole, they weren't wearing tin hats in anti-narco ops. I've backdated Eureka's USMC Force Recon with some weapon swaps so they are another option. The old Wargames Factory survivor sets are great sources for the spares box.

If you want G-3s then you could use Bundeswehr as proxies but probably a better option would be the Eureka Portuguese with head swaps.

Eureka's African ranges are also a good source for narcos. Loads of civvy/ semi civvy clad types wielding AK-47s and Eureka's moderns are simply the best sculpts available, a world removed from the others. By the by, there are significant populations of Afro-descendent in South America. Colombia has a large Afro-Colombian population, especially in the coastal regions. Fortunately, the features are so subtle they paint up as non-Africans.

Your country, your rules but remember that Colombia, like the other cocaine producing nations is Andean. So the popular trope of palm trees and the tropics is a bit off.  Medellin, which is a wonderful city to visit, is known as the city of eternal spring and it averages about 24C year round.  Yes, it's tropical on the coast but whilst it may be where drugs are shipped they aren't grown there.

Mexican adobe isn't especially appropriate. From what I've seen, narco bosses favoured new built and glitzy for their fincas.  It was about showing off and displaying their power. Escobar's Hacienda Napoles famously featured a bull ring, a zoo with hippos,  a shed chock full of vintage cars and a dinosaur park with gigantic ferro-concrete dinosaurs.

If you are looking at more humble dwellings then the building material of choice across the region is the terracotta brick, which is essentially a clay breeze block, hollow in the centre. The hillside barrios in places like Medellin are a sea of them, usually tin roofed.

If you want suitable planes then Italeri recently came out with a 1/48 Cessna and Testor's do a Learjet in the same scale. Both can be picked up for around ten to fifteen quid.

I'm about 2/3 through Winslow's "Power of the Dog".   Great fiction account of the beginning of the Mexican Cartels.   Though a bit north of your intended action, the book would be a good scenario source (and there actually are some scenes set in Colombia).

Looks like a great project.

What about these guys for your game. The Crooked Dice Danger 5 set comes with....er....5 models! ::) 3 of them might be good characters.

Maybe it's because of my background over on the Colonial Adventures board, but when I see the proposed set-up of airstrip, hangar and tropical foliage, my mind goes towards an Entebbe raid or Wild Geese type of set up.

You should do that as well as drug cartels and Predators. :) Anyway, good luck with it. Looking forward to seeing the it in all its finished glory with battle reports and shit.

Edit: Oh, and you definitely need Zoe Saldana in a catsuit, and a motorized garotte that cuts Brad Pitt's head off if you're going all-in with drug cartel nonsense.  ;D

If you're looking for aircraft then this is pretty much spot on for 28mm. The eyes etc are on peel off decals & underneath is a reasonable caricature of a Flying Boxcar. Very  "Air America". I've got one stashed away for just such a nefarious operation.

If you are still looking for planes can I recommend these...

(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Airforce/DSC_0043_zps67b2ebb4.jpg)(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Airforce/DSC_0045_zps1c872b42.jpg)

still need to finish mine...

or(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Airforce/DSC_0053_zps3a2cbc9b.jpg)

The above was listed on Ebay as a Delta 777-200 .I took a bit of a punt on this one based on the fact that the description gave the dimensions as an 11 inch wingspan and 8 inch body. It looked like it would work for the period and fit with a 1/48 scale. Total price was £11 (inc postage) – not bad for a pre built model.

Heres a picture with 28mm minis

The kit is Minicraft and the only decent thing about it is the decal sheet unfortunately. It'll be alright though  :)

What's your issue with it? I have a Minicraft Cessna floatplane that's waiting to be built and it looks pretty good in the box. Simple design? Warped plastic?

There's a fair bit of flash (not a massive problem), no decent lugs for joining parts together and there is some warping which isn't insurmountable but just frustrating when I want to do a quick job but I'll have to spend a bit more time on it to get it to the state I want it (a bit anal in that regard).

What you really want is one of these:

According to the legend, Escobar put atop the entrance gate of his hacienda a replica of the plane he used to make his first drug run to the United States. It's a Piper PA 18-150 Super Cub.

Still according to the legend, after that first successful drug run he said to his cousin and crime partner: "We're gonna need a bigger plane!"  That was in 1975 - the same year of the JAWS movie with that famous line...  :D

Hanger is pretty much done (apart from the growies outside). Not entirely happy with the rusting but it'll do for a quick gaming piece.

Time for an update  :)

The hanger is finished, I've got a figure painted (with six more to go) and there's a bit of downed plane. Also, as this thread isn't too long I think I can change the the old Photo*uckit pictures over once I've put the wips in the gallery.

So, hanger first. It was painted a while ago but I've finished it off by completing the groundwork and doing some scatter terrain. It'll need more, like a workbench, oxyacetelyne welder and other such oddities that would be found in such a place (and no, the white pile of bricks isn't bricks  ;))

Currently finishing off the runway but in the meantime I completed a little hut/house. Google street view in Colombia was my friend for this and there’s plenty of inspiration for more. The roof is supposed to be aluminium, hence the lack of rust. I should’ve done some grills for the rear windows but it’s late and they’re fiddly  lol

Great shack and very versatile. I could see that being used in all sorts of settings including my modern imagi nation setting. Are these going to be a new range in the shop as I can't be the only one interested in them?

Yes, that's the intention. Call this a proof of concept if you will  :)

Had a stinking head cold all week but I managed to paint a couple of figures which take the gang up to six, a preferable number for our current games.

Still going with the eighties theme and hopefully this one can be recognised (the beard gets in the way a bit).

And then another but with a slightly wonky logo on his back.

And finally a group shot.
