A Victorian/Edwardian setting for War of the Worlds has finally been announced by the BBC as going into production.

Glad that it will have a period setting :)

I'll keep my fingers crossed they don't wreck it

Should be interesting - be nice if they followed the story and based it in WOKING rather than Dorking (as in the quote) though... :-)

The Dorking reference could be an error based on the 'The Battle of Dorking' (written in the 1870's, about a German invasion of Britain), which is said to have inspired HG Wells when writing 'The War of the Worlds'.
I can understand if the story is adapted to keep to a single narrator (unlike the book, where it shifts between the two brothers narrating the story) and to introduce some more characters and events to pad it out (it's a very short book), specifically more rounded female ones, so long as they don't spoil the overall narrative. In the book the two women encountered are rather clichéd by modern standards as damsels in distress and, although possibly accurate to the period, probably wouldn't be greeted with much enthusiasm today.

There should be no excuses for not nailing the sets and costumes. Hopefully it will be watchable for more than its visuals.

Directed by the guy that did 'Jonothan Strange and Mr Norrel'-which makes me hopeful for something decent (I liked that series a lot). Fingers crossed for a Jeff Wayne soundtrack ;)

It looks like it'll be rather spiffy. I do hope they don't muck it up.

It'll be nice to see a proper attempt at the story & I don't think that adding a little more insight into its characters & their development would hurt it - as Cubs said, it's quite a short book, so some expansion will be necessary.
-
It will be interesting to see how and if the series addresses the politics of the novel’s era, and how they relate to the politics of England and Europe today.
Spare me, please.
Otherwise... sounds good.

Amongst the hype of the new Doctor Who trailer (moderators you have my sympathy) there was a coming soon multi-teaser which included The War of The Worlds.
IMDB entry is sparse, but their moderators have remove most of the Jeff Wayne drivel that has someone thought was funny.
