Title: Pulp Rally - any good racing rules?
Post by: warrenpeace on May 17, 2017, 02:53:54 AM
Are there any good automobile racing rules for the 1910's, 20's & 30's? I haven't played an auto racing game since the old Avalon Hill cardboard game Speed Circuit. Don't know what's out there now. And I wonder if the Phipps clan will produce their own racing rules.

I've acquired a ridiculous number of diecast auto models for those decades, and some of them are racing cars. I'm going to have to look for O scale drivers and passengers so that my cars don't look too empty.

Yes, we already do racing scenarios with the basic vehicle rule from the Pulp Guns, Gadgets, and Vehicles book. Just lay out a track and go!  :D

AND Pulp Rally is the name for our racing supplement. We are already playtesting some more racing stuff, but it will probably be next year before we get it released.

WSS Magazine did a set of chase rules No.57 Dec 2011. I have it, but can't access it at the moment. Notionally set in the Prohibition Era, but the rules could translate to any vehicle chase, and possibly racing.

That's nice artwork for the cover of Pulp Rally, in keeping with the simple single scene covers of prior booklets.

I'd suggest looking at some racing history from 1906 (first Targa Florio) through 1954 (last Carrera Panamericana) for some atmosphere of historical racing during those 5 decades:

Targa Florio: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Targa_Florio

24 Hours of Le Mans: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24_Hours_of_Le_Mans

Mille Miglia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mille_Miglia

Carrera Panamericana: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrera_Panamericana

I haven't started reading about the various Grand Prix or rally events of the era yet, but here's a couple of links re famous women racing drivers in the 1920's & 30's:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eli%C5%A1ka_Junkov%C3%A1

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell%C3%A9_Nice

And a week ago I came across a whole class of vehicle that I didn't know anything about, the cyclecar. Here's an article on the Morgan Motor Company, initially famous for its cyclecars:

Love that cover art! Who do I have to bribe for a poster-sized version to decorate my gaming cave?

Looking forward to Pulp Rally, anytime I allow vehicles into PA games the insanity and hijinks levels go right though the roof and inevitably someone WILL try to run someone else over.

My brother - who posts here very, very occasionally as Burgundavia - has a set of homebrew pulp racing rules that borrow bits of PA and other inspiration for light, fast, silly card-driven pulp wacky races. I'll prod him to get those polished enough to stick up on the web, but he's in the middle of becoming a member of the propertied classes (ie, just bought a townhouse with his fiance) so he's busy pretending to adulthood right now.

I'm really looking forward to reading the Pulp Rally rules. A while ago, I was tempted to set up a pulp road racing campaign. I gave up on the idea as I quickly ran out of ideas for scenarios and was worried the games would be too samey. I'm really curious what scenario ideas you came up with.

Burn 'Em Up Barnes was a big inspiration for the last Pulp Alley racing campaign we played. Here are some of the vehicle cards we used.......

Watch these bits of vintage racing film, which include quite a bit of two seat racing, driver & navigator:

The Beast of Turin is a gloriously absurd machine. I could watch those videos of it on repeat forever.

Day-to-day I dislike cars, generally, but I have a soft spot for motorsports, the stranger the better. Dakkar Rally, the Beast of Turin, Isle of Man motorcycle racing, anything like that... glorious absurdity!

Great topic, those chariots are a hoot!

Dave, that cover looks great but the fastest pulp racers have three wheels.

I would like to have long range rally types, like Paris-Timbouctou or similar with racers encountering various adventres en route!

Paris-dakar or cam-am distances would be wide open for lots of scenarios (crew is really a spy team doing covert work between stages) but the vehicles are rarely near each other.
