Title: Roman terrain
Post by: Erik on June 03, 2017, 10:33:48 PM
I am planning on making some roman terrain pieces for my newly painted Victrix miniatures. I would like to build some rural houses as well as a villa and I need some building material to help it look particulary roman. Mostly i would like to get my hands on some pillars and sheets of roof tiles and also some window- and door frames. Grand Manners does some pretty cool extra stuff to ad but no houses.

Which company would be the best place to turn to in the people of this forums opinion?

Cheers
Erik

From what references I was able to find, both pillars and windows for those sorts of building are super simple, to the point where pre-fabbed ones are probably unlikely.

Pillars appear to be literally just plain untapered cylinders with an equally plain square final. Similar in general proportion to the big fancy temple columns, but that's it. Windows are just simple boxes, sometimes with a basic "t" munton, usually without. Get some dowel and precut basswood squares from the craft store, and you're set for the pillars. Some plain balsa or basswood wood strips for the window frames.

I'm not very knowledgeable about roman architecture though.

Did find this blog post though:

Dude made a villa out of laser cut wood. Reading between the lines, I think he designed and cut it himself rather than it being from a commercial kit though.

Warbases have recently launched these laser cut MDF Roman buildings.

I saw them at Salute and I was very tempted to buy some.

They also have roof tile sheets

Some more digging:

Fenris has some fancy columns in 6-packs for 5 pound each:

Another option that occurs to me would be to go down to the hardware store and look for fluted drapery rods you could chop into little sections. That wouldn't get you finals though.

Find a cake decorating supplier for birthday cake columns.

Thanks for the input. I was completely unaware that Warbases had made so many roman buildings. It does throw my of my plan of building them myself. Its tempting to just buy the lot instead.

I found these roof tiles on a TMP thread. It is difficult to see from the picture how they look as it is 2D, but I think I will buy some and judge for my self.

The pillars from fenris are definitely going in my basket.
