Title: Pike & Shotte Garigliano 1503: On to version 2, it's better
Post by: olicana on 21 June 2017, 07:46:05 AM
I've just posted my lay out and scenario notes for the Battle of the Garigliano River 1503 using Pike and Shotte by Warlord Games.

http://olicanalad.blogspot.co.uk/2017/06/battle-of-garigliano-river-29-december.html (http://olicanalad.blogspot.co.uk/2017/06/battle-of-garigliano-river-29-december.html)

The post has a few shots of the troops close up, but here's one of the complete set up.

I have, for those interested, also posted my basic unit characterisation table. This is somewhat different to the one in Pike and Shotte and might provide some food for thought and discussion.

Anyway, I hope it might be of use to someone.

I've posted a report on the battle as fought last night. We'll do it again next week.

Those familiar with Pike and Shotte rules might have useful ideas for my dilemna with the broken battalia rule:

Thanks for looking

Nice set up

Where are the buildings from?

Thanks

Buildings are either War Bases 'modular building blanks' or scratch built in MDF using Warbases windows and doors and bits of balsa wood, etc. Roofs are HO scale model railway plastic sheets by Wills.

Nothing special but, finished with stippled artists tubed acrylic 'plasterwork' and painted, they work OK.

I did a post on it once

Looks like a fun battle and certainly a handsome table with gorgeous armies to fight it out.

I liked the added Science Fiction element (the Martian tripod supporting the Spanish advance)!

It would be a battle winner, but the bloody thing always rolls 1s.

Wow! Looks fantastic  :o :o :o

As I need to take some decisions on how to do the basing of my renaissance troops I would be grateful if you can share how you did yours? Particularly what sizes of bases you used?

I worked on basic assumptions, and although I know that to assume is to make an ass out of u and me, I don't believe them to be totally wrong. I'm not an expert, but my understanding isn't without foundation.

Firstly, close order troops, namely pike. Denser than other formations, 6 to a stand, 45 front x 45 mm depth.

Other close order infantry. 4 to a stand, 45 x 45 mm.

Close order horse, namely heavy types like Gendarmes. 2 to a stand, 45 x 60 mm.

Other foot, usually shot: I based my shot / crossbows (except Spanish, see below) 4 to a stand on 90 x 45 with them usually forming up two stands deep to represent them with a density of 'normal' close order infantry - one stand deep, or staggered about, and  they become open order. Although shot were capable of forming denser formations their firepower was much reduced in doing so - formal fire procedure being a somewhat future development.  In most wargames, depth is a secondary issue so I fudge the depth of troops represented in 'battle line'.

Light horse: It is my fundamental belief that basing light horse on wider bases than close horse goes against everything I've read on cavalry tactics in this period, earlier, or later. Light horse, in every account I've read, describes them as swarms, or clouds. This is a formation with depth, not width, capable of closing up to strike. Consequently, my light horse is 2 per stand 45 x 90mm.

Spanish shot is the exception. This is because I have Spanish shot (not after biccocca) as part of colunelas (later they are just shot). They are based as other close order infantry.

I hope that is helpful.

The swarm light cavalry basing looks great, I was an early adopter after I'd seen it on your collection.

If you get pikes levelled putting them on a long base works well to stop unwanted breakages and you can add casualties or doppelsoldner in the pike space

Thanks Olicana and Stuart!

Are there any limitations on basing depending on which ruleset you use?

I tend to change rules around my basing if needs be.

The weather, until yesterday, has been truly awful for about a week. It rained pretty much non-stop for three days. That kind of fitted with the scenario we've been doing: The Battle of the Garigliano River in 1503 where similar weather went on for almost two months. It's quite a neat scenario that could be used for just about any period, so I thought I'd share it here. It was written for Warlord Games' Pike and Shotte rules.

It comes with the usual photos, deployment notes, etc. This is the second version of the scenario. Last weeks run through showed a great deal of potential, so much so that I got the bug for it and started to do more research. After doing a good deal more reading than I had intended doing, and some serious head scratching, I came up with this version.

It might be of use to someone.
