Latest experiment, simple conversions to repurpose GW's current range of spirit host models for other games.
These figs normally come nine in a box, which is intended to build three 40mm "host" stands, each with three specific figures glued together in a swirling mess of ectoplasmic horror.
When assembled "stock" they're kind of convoluted, and they're only intended to fit in the same three patterns each time, so despite all the figures there's very little actual variety without conversion.

This struck me as a terrible waste of what are actually some pretty good sculpts, so I resorted to the obvious - covering over the various join points, digging up some spare gravestones and similar basing detail to provide attachment points for the ones that would normally be in mid-air stuck to another spirit, and building them up as nine separate spirits rather than three trios.

These then got stuck on 25mm round bases, some with a bit of added metal weight for stability, and painted up in glowy-green Scooby Doo ghost colors.

All in all I like them quite a bit, much more so that the standard builds, and I think they're much more useful as solo spooky things for the average roleplayer or skirmish gamer.

The overall style also reminds me strongly of Malifaux, and there's probably some Rezzy nightmare that they'd work to proxy for.

They are really good, I like them a lot and can see a load of uses for them. Now I want some.
-
Nicely done; and the choice of green has been executed effectively.
-
An excellent idea - and it worked beautifully! I may have to pick up some of those guys.

Thanks. They're really quite a bargain at $26 (assuming you paid retail instead of shopping around) when split into 9 models instead of 3 swarms, and anyone with a modest bits box should find it easy to dig up some base litter to anchor the flyer poses with. Games Workshop takes a lot of (well-deserved) heat for crazy high prices, but they do (accidentally?) produce the odd bargain here and there.
Have fun looking at the instruction manual for stock assembly, BTW. It's one of the worst I've seen in terms of figuring out where things are supposed to actually attach. Good for a chuckle at the very least. :)

Really great - I saw these repurposed as blood spirits once and that was a similarly effective use. Well worth checking.
-
Those are great, I really like the one coming out of the skeleton.
-
I really like the GW Vampire Counts range. Very imaginative, dynamic and useful for all kinds of things.

Yes, some excellent sculpts there. I'm particularly fond of the Mortis Engine/Coven Throne kit and the Zombie Dragon/Terrorgeist models. The Tomb Kings had some nifty stuff as well, although sadly they're all out of production since Age of Sigmar wrecked Warhammer Fantasy.
-
Those look great. I like the models, but haven't had a use for them. But now that I know they can be used individually like this, I may have to steal your idea.
And I agree, it's a nice range. I really like the black knights and the wight lord, too.
-
That works. Nicely done.
-
Excellent...now I'm tempted to get some to add to the plastic pile....
-
Very nicely done, and the green suits them splendidly. 8) 8) 8)
I have just been through another nightmare instruction booklet of Necron origin, and can only wonder what they got up to with this one...

Let me put it this way - the booklet was probably intended to be color coded to show what part goes where, but it's printed in B&W all the way through. Truly a joy to behold. Makes the online Malifaux instruction guides look terrific by comparison.

Your solution to the problem is ingenious.

Oh, I bought them intending to split them up. Had a look at them assembled as hosts at the FLGS and decided they could be broken up without too much effort. The terrible, terrible assembly guide just made me really happy that I'd already made that choice. :)
-
Simply awesome idea!!!!!
I'm going to steal the hell out of it.... With full credit going to you of course! ;)

Your imaginative use of the Spirit Host Guys is SPLENDID...BEAUTIFULLY painted creations. VERY WELL DONE!
You did, however, create a need for some of those Living Impaired Folk for my own Graveyard. This is the first G.W. order I've made in quite awhile. They & I are grateful for your inspiration.
-
Glad you liked them. They have some obvious other roles as well, like adding them to dioramas and terrain. If this batch doesn't sell for me (they're sure not going anywhere on ebay so far) I may retask some of them towards doing a necromantic ritual mini-diorama or somesuch.
FWIW you'll find one other piece on the sprues, that being a partial skeleton with a wisp of ectoplasm coming out of it. When doing a stock assembly the "tail" of one of the spirits glues to it, but I'm sure I'll find something else to use it for eventually.
I suspect some of the parts from the Mortis Engine/Coven Throne may also have similar uses, although they're pretty expensive even from the specialized bits sellers online.

New addition to the project, now we've got a Necromancer and a customized Summoning Circle added to the mix.
The lass is a "Cleric of Urgotha" from Reaper's Pathfinder range.
Never heard of Urgotha, but despite the fancy farm tool the gal's wielding I doubt this is some kind of agricultural deity.
The circle itself is a Reaper Bones piece, with the last unused bit out of the GW spirit host box added and customized with extra ectoplasm and couple more wisps added as well.

The wisps actually came from those Firestorm Tarakian ships I posted recently. They sold on ebay and the buyer didn't want the custom weapons special effects left on them, so I trimmed them back off and re-used them here. Efficiency, don't you know?
And here's the current full crew:

Very cool. Who makes that necromancer figures?
-Michael
-
He specifically says Reaper Pathfinder line.
Nice work on the summoning circle and spirits for sure, Mr Hobby!

I did. Even more specifically, I said it was a Cleric of Urgotha, which shouldn't be very hard to search for - unless I've missed the sudden rise of a real-world cult of Urgothan televangelists, maybe?
Nice work on the summoning circle and spirits for sure, Mr Hobby!
Now surely if you're trying to be formal about it, I would be Mr. Services, wouldn't I? :)
-
I don't know why, but looking at those AND the added necromancer and a summoning circle made me feel really... satisfied :d
Like "these fit so damn well together and look so perfect when arranged"
