Title: Painting stuff for Zero Dark
Post by: precinctomega on July 03, 2017, 01:46:27 PM
With the alpha test phase of Zero Dark rapidly approaching its conclusion, I'm keen to make the beta-test version a bit more attractive, which means I need minis to populate its pages and give people a real sense of the enormous potential range of options the game offers.

I've already splurged on Annie's Ghosts of Gaia II, so no doubt they'll feature heavily.  But now I'm scouring my collection, selling off unnecessary accretions and trading for better options and getting them painted up appropriately and in a mix of styles, colours and techniques.

First off, I finally assembled and painted two Maelstrom's Edge minis I got free from Salute 2016 (IIRC):

Then I picked up some old AT-43 (most of the original starter set, less the terrain) in a trade and I thought the Fire Toad would be a perfect fit for a Defence Mech:

Lots more to follow.

Running with my WIP MERF (Martian Evacuation & Rescue Force) force as an Electronic Warfare Operator (EWOp), is "Widow" from Hasslefree Miniatures.  I'm notoriously stingy with miniature purchasing, preferring trades, second hand and eBay bargains to buying new stuff, but Hasslefree is one company I wish I had more money to throw at.

I am awestruck by your brushwork. Those Maelstrom's Edge minis are mindblowing, and really love the gal from HF as well.

I never seem to have much luck with the chipped paint look on futuristic armor, so I am rather envious.  :o ;D o_o

The Defence Mech doesn't turn up in every game, but it does seem to show up in most games, so it's fun to have a selection to choose from.  I've had this mech from EMP Games hanging around for a while, waiting for paint, so this project seemed like an ideal opportunity to get it finished.  That's actually a 40mm base, when the rules call for a 60mm, so he could also double as a synthetic Heavy Elite or hero, too, although he's a bit on the tall side.

I know it can be hard to judge the size of something you've not seen before, and this is a very new release from EMP Games - I was lucky enough to get a preview copy - so you're unlikely to have seen this before.  So here's a scale reference shot:

Making some progress on the UNA from AT-43, which I'm re-basing and repainting to be generic sci-fi types:

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2017/7/21/891868_sm-AT-43%2C%20Precinct%20Omega%2C%20Precinctomega%2C%20Rackham%2C%20Scifi%2C%20Troopers%2C%20Una%2C%20Zero%20Dark.jpg) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/891868-AT-43%2C%20Precinct%20Omega%2C%20Precinctomega%2C%20Rackham%2C%20Scifi%2C%20Troopers%2C%20Una%2C%20Zero%20Dark.html)

They are pretty good sculpts, although I have some issues with the design.  Still, I can't complain about how easy the painting is on them.
