Hello I'm Tim and I have a crazy project on the go, it's a 1/35 game board with figures and aircraft. I've had all these models for a couple of years but when a friend showed me Flames of WAR it got me going on making a giant game board with Vietnam era figures and hueys:) I've been working sporadically since the beginning of this year but still spending a lot of hours on it. After really going through FOW I decided to make my own game with dice as a shooting and defensive actions. Movement would be kind of the same with measured movement. Basically get firepower on the opfor. I'm making a ammo system so each side has to rearm or risk running out of ammo. I'm still working on the rules. The game board will be 8' x 8' x 1"Styrofoam with a custom table frame made from PVC pipe. The board will be in two 4' x 8' sections to be able reach everywhere. A second board will be holding the helicopters. A clear plastic sheet strapped across a square tent 12' x 12' x 8' made of PVC pipe. Lots of greenery is still to be made. I think I've found a way to make cheep grass and tree leaves but it's going to take lots hours to make:)
Doing a test to see how a 8' x 12' looked. Imaging the CH-47 is dropping off a howitzer:)

How I'm going to hang the helicopters. A rod going through the huey rotor mast and connects at the bottom. The rotor can rotate too. Two Neodymium magnets hold up the helicopter.

I've had a few games with make shift rules.

I'm hoping to be done by the end of the year, if not complete playable at least. This is crazy to some but I'm quite enjoying it and think it'll be awesome when complete.

Oh, man, gotta follow this. 8) 8) 8)

I like the lunacy 8)

Impressive!

Okay, first, 54mm is an awesome scale! I love it, I'm glad to see others do too!
Second, hanging the copters! Is that a metal ball on one side, and a magnet on the stick for the other? That's...genius!
-
That is beautifully mad! Fantastic project & I look forward to following its progress - the suspended Huey's are great!
-
WOW. And to think I catch flak from my friends for gaming in 1/48 scale.
You're taking it to the next level with 1/35 scale.
-
Your are off to a great start.
Look forward to following what you do next.

Just spent 30 minutes writing a post and accidently hit X.....

Crazy; in a good way. I hope you keep at it.

Started painting the rest all at once. So far about 10 hours from my last post picture to this one. Making the skin colors was fun with mixing up the tones. I'm still not %100 on the greens there's soo many greens lol. I'm still needing patches but I'm in the air whether to go with 101st or Air Cav. Making trees with detachable canopies and grass made out of wig hair. I find the wig hair is a good size for 1/35 and cheap as I have a lot of grass to make.

My desk is just a little cluttered :)

Just a little update. Finished the camo on the helmets. Little touch ups to do still.

Totally crazy project but absolutely brilliant!!! :)

Got my material today to make my grass. :D Synthetic white wig hair spray painted green then glued on the brown mesh. Each troop has a pin to poke into the Styrofoam to stand up. Using flat plastic as booby traps. The board will be painted brown and have strips of grass at two different heights. Made weapon straps from masking tape and tamiya paint. I was going to make metal holders for the straps but I saw a m16 with it's strap tide around the stock and barrel and went that way:).

64 square feet of grass, trees and bush :D

Busy summer not much time on the game, but progress continues. Did about 4 hours today working on the Hueys.
Built the pilot seat frames from scratch and modified the original pilot seats. I used 1mmx1mm magnets on the bottom of the pilot seat frame and the cyclic. Using bigger magnets I got the pilot doors to be in the open and closed position.

My First Platoon gets ever closer to being completed. The cabin ceiling, roof and transmission/cover are one piece. The engine cover is glued the helicopter body. The covers make good grab points. Making fictitious army units but using 101st Airborne as the start. I read or watched something and the NVA/VC feared the 101st just by the sight of the eagle patch so much they were allowed to leave it colored instead of going green.

You obviously come from the modelling side of the hobby - which is great of course! The idea of hanging the choppers from the ceiling is a really great one. I look forward how that proves in a game though! :-*
-
Holy shit, that's ambitious!
I've never gamed with 54mms.
-
It is moving forward in leaps and bounds. I commend you.

I've googled 1/35 (54mm) scale gaming and found some WW2 stuff, I like the detail at this scale. Did another 6hrs, put together 12 more NVA soldiers. Drilled holes in their feet and fitted sewing pins into the holes to stand with out a stand ;)
Once again Mostly fictitious army unit names and numbers.

After writing that last post I got ambitious and assembled 24 Pilots and modified them to switch legs, arms. I'm using diorama glue on the connection points. The glue dries to a tacky coating and holds parts together. For my game helicopter crews can fight. Easy switch between legs.
