Looking for some of you more knowledgeable chaps to advise me here. After a couple of false starts over the years I am going to get into Samurai wargaming, going with the Perry range as I always like their stuff. First question is, What rules to use for battles, not wanting skirmish rules as I know there are a lot out there.
Second question is a real newbie one! Where do the musicians, conch player, drummers go in relation to the massed ranks of foot soldiers?
Are they part of the group or are they apart from them, with the commanders?
I have no doubt I will have plenty more but I know you guys will lead me through my new endevaour. :)

For a relatively lower model count game, there is a pretty good, official list for Of God's And Mortals if you want to go that route with more fantastic elements.
There is also the Kings of War Historicals if you want to have more variety in your opposition, mainly because it's more of an open play thing from where I've seen it run...
I've mainly stuck to skirmish games though, however, there are a lot of people that I know who take a skirmish rule set and multibase for it and up base size for everything, which tends to work rather well with Ronin from the few bits I've played that way.

Many thanks for the reply, maybe the upscaling skirmish game would work well enough for me, that is what I shall look at first. :)

I would put the conch blowers and drummers with the command base for a 'clan' or group of units. In illustrations I've seen they're always close to the commander's camp.

You could try Dragon/Lion Rampant. This would suit the technology and troop types in a Shogun Total War kind of way.

I was wondering about doing that, so that's the way I will base them, thanks for the information. :)

I will have a look at that may be the way to go, cheers for that.

Regarding the 'musicians' it would really depend on how a big a game you're wanting to play. If it's only small skirmish then you'll only ever have one 'set' in play so place or base them with the command. A sabot base would be a good option if you want to use them separately or remove them.

Thanks for that James, hadn't thought of using a sabot base but that might be the way to go. All far down the road at the moment, this project is still in it's infancy!! :)

From small things grow larger things :D
You'll be doing Sekigahara before you know it ;)

It may also be the case that a rules set would have a use for a dedicated musician base. Peter Pig's 'Battles in the Age of War' set has 'signal' bases which are represented by musicians. So maybe the safest option is to have them on a separate base.

Good point, many thanks for that. I think that this is the safest bet and way to go. :)
