Title: Re-discovering 1/72
Post by: Norm on July 12, 2017, 12:09:16 PM
Just a brief ramble about the joys of the sprue by someone from the Airfix Generation. The post includes a link to an earlier post that looks at the mechanics of the Iron Cross rules.

Bonjour Norm,

Did the same thing myself and having great fun!

Using the rather old Rapid Fire rules too which I used when gaming with my son a long time ago.

Excellent scope for modelling.

Cheers,

Paul

WWII 1/72 is indeed a great scale. I only gave it up because it coincided timewise with my marriage collapsing and I sold everything off.
It did become a black hole moneywise, because I never seemed to have enough vehicles, but that was probably my own fault. (there was so much out there I wanted)
I actually find 28mm cheaper because I only need the odd vehicle.

Interesting reasoning  :D If you only need the odd vehicle 20mm would be much cheaper :) I find 20mm cheaper because I need odd vehicles that would cost a flipping fortune in 28mm, or are simply not made. Also, with an average cost of 5-6 euros for a unmdade second hand 1/72 kit it is perfect for my limited income.

Hi Johan yes I guess I need to explain that. Vehicle for vehicle you are right, the smaller you go in scale the cheaper it will be. The problem for me was that in 1/72 I felt I wanted to play company or battalion level games so I always needed loads of each vehicle. Over 4 years of making and painting model tanks, trucks  and infantry and I never properly finished a single army. It just became about collecting. Sometimes even I got sick at how much I was spending.
So the problem was really about me getting into a rut with 1/72, not the scale itself.

With 28mm that compulsion/temptation is just not there. A dozen figures, a truck and a tank and I am satisfied. I might even finish a project some day soon!

Gotcha. You play 28mm like I play 20mm. I like small forces with a few vehicles, I'm not into games with dozens of vehicles.
