Title: early Vietnam war
Post by: summsi on 16 July 2017, 10:33:51 AM
Hi,

which figures are suitable for the very early vietnam war, from about 1960 to 1965?

Maybe with u.s. advisers and arvn or south vietnamese militia.

TAG do a couple of packs of US Army with M-14s. Alas, they don't really have the look of USMC for the early battles like Operation Starlite. Someone should really do some marines in standard stateside fatigues and flak jackets.

ARVN are a struggle to find. Battle Honours did some I believe. Your best bet would be to use Commando Miniatures Indonesians with Garands and M-1 carbines. You would really need to do head swaps for tin hats but otherwise they would be ideal. You should find suitable figures for advisors in that lot.

thank's Carlos!!

Are there also some plastics that could be used? They are easier to convert.

I know very little about US equipment, but these are some Bolt Action figures (US Army).

No idea where you would get M14s.

The M16s are from Wargames Factory (now Warlord Project Z).

You might be able to do something similar with the USMC figures.

Don't The Assault Group do separate M14s? Don't Brigade Games do some 50s/60s US in their Atomic Cafe range? I remember someone mentioned them in a similar discussion.

Killer B Games do U.S. soldiers with M14s and 1956 webbing in the Invasion X Sci-Fi range. Three packs of four including a command pack. They are available in the U.S. from Recreational conflict.

The KillerB figures are 27mm sole to eye, which depending on your other figures might make them short.

size should not be a problem, when using them as vietnamese.

Could plastic ww2 marines be converted into montagnards or something similar?

Well you'd need to file the Killer B figures' M-14s back to Garands as the Vietnamese didn't use them.

Convert USMC to montagnards? Conceivably, bit it would be a lot of work.

Company B just released some Filipino guerillas. One or two of those look like they might work. One advantage is that Broadbent's sculpts are typically smaller than most others. The other option would again be the Commando miniatures Indonesians.

Vietnam really is a kind of half forgotten period for gaming. If someone had the smarts to do a half decent range of troops in tin hat, US stateside style fatigues and WW2 era weapons, they'd be useable for half the world in the 1960s.

or use them as south vietnamese marines? right weapons, but don't know if the uniforms are ok?
