Title: Audrey's Superhero Miniatures
Post by: audrey on July 26, 2017, 04:28:51 PM
I'm getting ready to run my first game of Super Mission Force this weekend. It will be X-men vs Brotherhood of (Evil) Mutants. Last night I took a quick shot (slightly out of focus :?) of the finished X-Men team. All of them are heroclix repaints. Cyclops was modified removing an eye blast effect and sculpting a bit of his visor. Nightcrawler was built from an old bamfing figure where I merged a top half and bottom half and filled in the missing bits. None of these were stripped before hand. I painted right over the original paint job. I need to spray them with a matte coat because they are shinny in spots from the ink washes. Eventually I plan on replacing the old version of Rogue as I do not care for the sculpt. But I painted the figure many years ago before the Heroclix line started getting better with their sculpts. I will share more as I finish them.

Very nice painting, and kit-bashing.

I agree with you about the Rogue figure, but I'm sure that she'll work just fine for now.

Good to see you still painting and gaming Audrey.

The heroes look fantastic.

I wouldn't have beleived you didn't strip them before hand, you either got real lucky or your great paintjobs are hiding a lot of filled in details.  :o

Guessing this is the Nightcrawler you started with? Might give that a try myself, it's the only Nightcrawler I have and I don't care for the effect.

Excellent repaints! I'm rebasing and painting a bunch of DC Clix right now also for use with SMF. I'd love to hear how the game goes.

Very nicely painted. That second pic with night crawler looks odd to say the least.

That is the one! I used the only upper torso and the pair of legs on the right side. With a bit of kneadatite in between to fill the gaps. There are some good heroclix versions of Nightcrawler out there now. When I did the conversion it was just that one and the swashbuckling version.

I'll post about the SMF game soon. In the mean time here is a quick shot I took of the Brotherhood when I finished them up. Same as the X-men, these are painted on top of the original paint job. Where I clean the mold lines it goes to the bare plastic from the file/xacto. So I brush on some gesso over the bare areas. I sculpted the tongue for Toad because I wanted it to show instead of the big grin on the original figure. I am kind of neutral on the integrated flying effects of the newer heroclix. I would prefer to have a thin rod instead (see Banshee above) but if I removed the one on magneto I would have had to resculpt a lot of his legs and didn't feel like doing that. I did some experiments on just adding a wash to the translucent flight effects but it looked odd to me and so I prefer painting them. If anyone has had luck removing the flight effects let me know.

Then a little versus shot I sent to the players before the game.

Again a good proof that these heroclix are a great start for super heroes modelling!

I am not going to give a blow by blow account of the Super Mission Force game. Overall everyone had a fun time and the game was pretty quick. The X-men had 5 Heroes and the Brotherhood had 4 models but 5 Hero levels as Magneto counted as 2. I used the stats given in the thread here on LAF (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=100873.0). We ran the Seek and Find scenario found in SMF. The X-men managed to grab 2 artifacts but the 4 out of 5 of their team were KOed. So Nightcrawler left with the 2 artifacts. The Brotherhood did better fighting wise. Only Toad was KOed and they took the field. We found the Alien Artifact TN3 to be pretty brutal. We failed way more times than succeeded. Maybe we were just rolling really badly for the artifacts but twice we had people fail to get any goals and so took 3 psyche wounds. Plus various other failures resulting in 1-2 psyche wounds. In the end it was getting risky to try and grab an artifact so both teams started to ignore the artifacts and pummel each other instead.

Over all the group had a good time but felt SMF wasn't the game for our group. We all have played Super System since first edition so some players would mention during the game,"but in SS you can do x & y". This may have tainted our view of SMF as a game by itself. I wanted to try the SMF rules because we haven't played SS since 3rd edition (though I have 4th) and I was expecting 4-6 players for the game. In general we like the grit in SS and so will go back to playing that. But it got me to finish painting the X-Men and Brotherhood. Also I plan on running a similar scenario with the same teams using SS4 just so we have a better comparison. As for SMF, I did like the quick character creation and I feel it covers what Scott was wanting, a fast fun supers game. I'd certainly play SMF again but if I have the extra time to put into a game it will be Super System.

Below are some photos from our game of Super Mission Force. Like usual I got wrapped up in the game and didn't take that many. The corpse markers where used to represent people that had been implanted with Alien Tech and were killed. Yeah a bit dark for super heroes but the counters were painted. Now onto the photos

The brotherhood start searching for the alien artifacts

The X-men do the same

Wolverine looking like he just killed a lady but was really searching for artifacts.

Magneto crests the hill and has Cyclops in his sight.

Wolverine is ganged up on by Avalanche and Toad but it doesn't work. Wolverine KOs Toad.

Very glad you tried SMF! It is a different sort of game from SS. For me the loss of detail is more than made up by the speed of chargen and overall faster play. If you employ the Archetype Maneuvers you do get some "grit" back.

But I am so happy you and your group love SS so much! It remains evergreen since it is really tied to no specific universe or figure line. Superfigs are great but you don't need them to play 😄

Awesome looking figs! Glad to see you got some use out of the stats I posted :-)

Which Cyclops fig is that? I have been looking for a decent 90s sculpt and this one turned out great.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone.

Cyclops #016 From Wolverine and the X-Men. Though I removed the beam effect and sculpted a new visor to replace it.

What stats did you use for Avalanche, btw? I'm trying to do a build for Rictor, who has a similar power set, but I'm struggling with how to represent his seismic abilities.

To answer my own question, the Shockwave maneuver that Bricks get access to on p142 of the rules could be a good starting point, combined perhaps with Stun or Power Blasts. Any other thoughts?

Ah cool, thanks. Must have missed that one. I'm pretty familiar with the thread, I believe the X-Men stats you used were the ones I posted  ;D
