Title: Tancrede's Battle of the Bulge project

Some guys in my gaming club are now launching some Bolt Action games (late war, with US, german and russian armies) every tuesday, and after some reflexion, I've decided to join and add another project on my long "things to paint" list... :D

I've decided to paint a fallschirmjäger army, for winter '44/'45 (Ardennes, east front and maybe in Italy).

So here are the first minis, a blister of HQ from Warlord Games (radio, medic and 2 officers).
The camo is not as realistic as I wanted to do, but I've decided to go for a simplified one, just to identify the minis as FJ without goint mad painting more than 40 minis ! :D

Those minis are really cool to paint, and it's a nice change of all the colorful minis (Irish for SAGA, elves for KoW, minis for Infinity) on my desk ! :D

For now, I'm waiting for the next minis : a fallschirmjäger PaK40 and a SdKfz 251 from Warlord Games.
And as I have sold an old SAGA warband, I now have funds to buy more FJ to complete the army.

So expect some news soon !

For today, some volkgrenadiers from Warlord Games painted as ex-Luftwaffe troops.

The idea fo me is to represent the 18.volksgrenadier division at the beginning of the Ardennes offensive. The uniform should be darker, but I think it do the job well enough.
This division was made of the remnants of the 18 luftwaffe feld division (nearly destroyed in Normandy) an rebuilt as a volksgrenadier division by adding many soldiers from the Kriegsmarine and the Luftwaffe.

The blue is similar to how I paint my luftwaffe troops and not the morning greys color actually fielded. I think it captures the correct feel which is the most important thing when people look at the figs on a table..

Very nice mini, but a little heavy (resin body + metal parts). I've added some details on it, to bring some life to the model.

Totally agree! You normally find WWII quite mild colour-wise, but these are great! 8)

Another fan of the colours used here!

Choosing a Volksgrenadier division based on a Luftwaffe Field Division was inspired! Not only does it give the collection a narrative and character all their own...but they will stand out amid the sea of Waffen SS and Heer winter-clothed troops!

For my "Luftwaffe Grey", I used 2 colors :
- the lighter one (on the FJ) is made using GW "fenris grey" (+ AP black for shade and PA ivory for highlights)
- the darker one (on Shultz/Klink) is made using a mix of GW 'kantor blue" + PA black (with black ink + highlights by adding PA ivory to the base mix).

I hope it helps, even if the light grey is not dark enough for real luftwaffe grey.
