As part of the Gallipoli Campaign project for Great War Spearhead, I am looking for a model to represent SS River Clyde. This was the collier converted to a troop-carrying ship that was beached near Cape Helles. Does anyone know of something that would be suitable in 1:600 through 1:2400 scales - I don't mind which scale in this range?
Thanks for your help.

Here is a photo of River Clyde from the side:

No idea, only suggestion I have is to Google image search for "naval merchant" with common scales ("1/1200"). I think WWII ranges will probably yield some results due to merchant vessels like the River Clyde being useful for convoy hunting games, etc.
-
So for "1/1200 naval merchant WWII":
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=1/1200+naval+merchant+WWII&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi33ZuzwvPVAhUEu7wKHcpLAfoQ_AUICigB&biw=1920&bih=947
It's going to give a lot of stuff you're not interested in, but will quickly show other scales and manufacturers of merchant vessels that may give a good base to convert.

Well PT Dockyards MR3 1200 Ton Merchant looks reasonable.
The other is the H&R 4000 Ton Cargo Ship -

Tumbling Dice do Mercantile Marine ships in their 1/2400 Naval Age of Battleships range but no pics I am afraid. There might be something suitable in their 1/600 range as well possibly.

The H & R (ex Skytrex) one has a similar profile, although it's a larger vessel.

A much better finish than on my own model!

Thank you. How long is the model?

Thank you. I might pick up the various examples anyway. You can't have enough troop ships standing off the coast...

Robert
Around 6 inches for the big 4000 tonner. I'll try & find mine in the shed tomorrow.

Thank you so much.

From photographs, it looks like I could shorten the 3000 tonner. This would give a reasonably accurate facsimile with a modest length from the perspective of a 6mm battlefield.

Here is a photo of the steam pinnace and tows that I have just painted up. Not directly related to SS River Clyde as such but these were used to ferry men to shore in the Gallipoli landings. The boats are 1:600 scale, sourced via White Ensign Models. They are mounted on a plywood ultra thin base that is 1.25" x 2.5", just to give a better sense of the scale.

And, thanks to all your help, here is a sneak preview of the work in progress on SS River Clyde:

Looking good!

Thank you. She is sitting quite low in the water so will mobilise all of my scratch building skills to provide more hull above the waterline...
Robert
-
Still working on the hull but here is a photograph of the battlefield further north. It shows the Anzac Cove area - SS River Clyde was further south on the southern tip of the Gallipoli Peninsula.

That's a lot of bushes!

I think I may have them the wrong way round. Should be fewer on the ridges and more in the valleys. Easy to change though.

My Great Great Grandfathers Brother James Malia won the conspicuous gallantry medal. At Gallipoli he was in the Anson battalion which were on the ss river clyde

Thank you very much for the really interesting link back to SS River Clyde!

I managed to start work on the gangways for SS River Clyde today. They are detachable. The boats are from the Peter Pig pirates range. At 1/450th scale, they work nicely for this model. You can also see how the hull of SS River Clyde has been raised. The gangways would have been impossible otherwise...

Nice work - looks very fiddly.
How many men / stores where they offloading that making this floating pier was worthwhile?
-
Fiddly indeed, but looks very nice.

2,000 assault troops as part of the initial assault. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_River_Clyde
It's annoying that the British government didn't see fit to buy her as a war memorial but let her be scrapped in 1966.
-
Thank you all. Not too fiddly, thank goodness.

I used the empty Peter Pig boats for the SS River Clyde. Here are the Peter Pig cutters with crew. The men are painted up as ANZACs plus a navy man in each boat:

Here is an example of British WW1 battleship providing naval gunfire support for the Gallipoli landings. She is a Formidable Class from the Tumbling Dice range. The markers are from Litko:

Those litko markers work very well.

Here are some photos of a Short Seaplane, which was used for aerial observation of the naval gunfire support. The model is from Heroics and Ros in 6mm scale. A second model is being painted up with the green camouflage pattern too.

very nice. Love the plane !

Here is the troopship RIM Hardinge, supported by HMS Lord Nelson. Both models from Tumbling Dice. Hardinge provided naval gunfire support in the Suez Canal defensive operation in 1915.
