Hello all!
I couldn't see this in any thread (but apologies if I merely failed to look hard enough) so I thought I'd bring it to the forum's attention:
Post-apocalypse, petrol-powered mayhem - in 1934!
"Emerging from the heat shimmer they come in a roar of sound and fury, the nomad brigands and road pilots. Chrome, dust and rust in your rearview mirror are the first harbingers of impending doom. Then the incessant chatter of twin Vickers fills your ears and your auto begins to disintegrate around you.
It's the Dirty Thirties and you're having a bad day...
Pray Maximilian is out there somewhere!"
Rules are by Mana Press, miniatures by Eureka, so it's an all-Aussie-made affair. Seems appropriate given the inspiration... ;)
Some page previews, for those with Facebook...
https://www.facebook.com/tribalgame/posts/1848280661853226 (https://www.facebook.com/tribalgame/posts/1848280661853226)
there will be a physical rulebook soon, but for now it's available from wargamesvault:
http://www.wargamevault.com/product/220728/Maximillian-1934--Pulp-Action-Road-Rage-Rules (http://www.wargamevault.com/product/220728/Maximillian-1934--Pulp-Action-Road-Rage-Rules)
I think my idea for a 1930's Grand Prix game is about to get a little more interesting... :D

Great looking cover.
-
Wow, that cover art!
-
Looks fun, but I would have to wait until I can see the figures that will be part of the game.
-
They have a nice five page breakdown in this Septembers 'Pulp' issue of Wargames illustrated.
The vehicles are floating around on thread or two.
Like Scurv I'm more inclined to buy a hard copy than down load one.
Let's face it,
I'm not going to be one to object to rules needing pulp vehicles ,especially as I've already weapons and mounts available for my own(mind you I'd be even less inclined to object if they'd ask me to sculpt some.😁 )
Mark
-
This looks like it deserves a shufty
-
The minis are great and some of them have a far wider application than the game itself. The 'pilot/driver' figures have application to all kinds of Great War, Pulp and WW2 games and the running chaps in boiler suits have seen conversion to Soviet Factory, militia, German ground crew etc. Plus there's all the useful bits like Scarff rings and various forms of Lewis gun.
About time Nic started promoting this range, it's very, very good.

I can help with that decision-making process... :)

Hey Mark, you should give Nic an email: nicr@eurekamin.com.au He's always keen for more vehicle sculpts, and he'd probably (hopefully?) get on well with a fellow yorkshireman. ;)
-
Thanks Macro,
Those do look very interesting. When will Eureka have these on sale?
-
Okay,
I found the cars on the USA Eureka under Maximillion not Maximillian.
But, the main Eureka site does not have them listed at all. I am confused?
-
Anyone after the cars/drivers/bling for Max34, just get in contact with Nic at Eureka Miniatures: nicr@eurekamin.com.au He will provide the pre-release pdf of the range and you can order straight away
-
Macrossmartin - thise some sweet vehicles. In that second pic, the white one looks like a 3wheel cycle where did you get it?
-
All these three-wheelers are just making me think of the "any old iron" bit from Top Gear:

As Scurv said; all the minis are from Eureka. Just to clarify - the pics are not mine, although I wish I already had a collection of these painted to that standard! ;)

Perfect for (the soon upcoming, I hope) PULP ALLEY RALLY! :D

Seriously, I want a huge poster version of that now. Sadly the original artist won't sell them!

Google for a high resolution image + printing store = DONE! :D (according to international law, once in the www it's public domain to be printed for personal use!)
-
Do buy the cars chaps, I worked ever so hard on their design. They are very modular and I'm looking forwards to see what the mad geniuses of this board will come up with. Even seeing mana presses "official" vehicles held a couple of surprises as they switched around parts in ways I hadn't thought off.

I should note those are the old sculpts, Nic might have a few more of those but as far as I know all new car kits will be the new 3d printed designs.
I thought there was a photo online of the monowheel - anyone know where one of these beauties is? (I suspect that Photobucket is responsible for me not being able to find it.)
I have one, (perks of the job) if you can't find any pictures I could take some. I haven't build it yet and don't have a rider. Nor am I entirely sure how it goes together for that matter, but I can try!

That is exactly the thing Nic at Eureka has a model of! (in this case, not my sculpt)

Amazingly, the engine-powered Monowheel is an actual vehicle from early 30s:

EXACTLY!!! I'm looking forward to seeing crazy cars as well. Half of the fun in playing this period/genre, I think, is in making your own characterful vehicles. It's very much in the spirit of Mad Max as well, I reckon.

Dave, what you have to print ASAP is the PULP ALLEY RALLY book! ;)

Nic really has to have a proper release of this.
Will there be hard copies of the rules at the store this friday for the open day?
Ordered print run from Peter (graphics dude) - hopefully will have it this week. Also waiting on turning templates done by Viv at Knights of Dice.
Will sell both rulebook and template together.
If the stars align, and everything gets done in time, I'll rush em over to Nic's before Friday... (didn't realise it was Open Day already!)
Last pic from me...

For the life of me, I can't remember who did these... guys from Nunawading Wargames Assoc?

@Scurv - sounds good. I'll see when I can come in (or when swmbo allows me, I should say).

This one?
Yes :` Forgot to check Mana Press' social media stuff. Thanks bro.

Good picture of the cars "in the rough" from Mana presses Facebook

Right now there are 3 regular car bodies, (only 2 shown) with 3 modular grills and all sorts of goodies for customizing them. (such as duck-foot spitfire exhausts!) And then there is the Golden arrow land speed vehicle used as the car of the titular Maximilian.
The driver models are superbly sculpted and full of character. You could slap them down on anything and make it look like a mean racing machine by their presence alone.
-
Playing this very game, with some lovely but badly painted miniatures, at the club on Thursday and got to play it last week as part of my job!
And yes, Nic, get promoting this range, it really is excellent!
-

That is the unvarnished truth - they're the best part of all this. Who's the sculptor, I wonder? Anyone know?

I should take offence since they are the only thing I didn't make about the cars, but you are absolutely right. I shall ask Nic next time we exchange email.
-
Nearly all those vehicles are painted, designed and constructed by the wonderful Ty Chapman.
We are taking the best of the ideas, with his permission and making them suitable for production.
The figures and cars will be the next thing on the web site, this was all planned for the end of September, but as often happens, the gun was jumped!

Ooooohhhh that monowheel looks pulptastic. The cars are superb and can't wait to order a couple.

The price of success, Nic? ;) How nice to be popular! :D
Seriously though, I hope this proves serendipitous, rather than a problem for production. I know there's only so many hours in a day, and production often needs to be tightly scheduled, sometimes leaving little room for the unexpected.
But what did you expect, after coming up with such a lovely line of models? ;)

Nice work on the cars!
Thank you very much! Though I felt quite humbled by your own 3d printer pulp car offerings. :-*

Is a valid build a Junker with a MG on Swing Mount [L] and another one [R]? And then add to the driver or gunner(s?) skill for the last $100?
I have a 1st Corps Austin armoured car that needs apainting.

Yup that looks about right. Should be $900 all up for the junker & equipment - assuming you're going with typical $1000 build. Could buy some extra armour somewhere?
Yours look like this?

Yup takes up hard points, change swing mounts to pintle mounts? side-facing machine guns are gonna give you a decent field of fire, already (just not forward and rear). Gives you two hard points - armour for front and rear? Depends on your tactics... you'll have less field of fire, but you'll have a bit more protection. Reckon you'll have enemy to the front and back of you? Or to your sides?

Played Car Wars earlier in the year. First game, after being rammed, one of the players (flipped onto his side) wished he had roof and floor armour lol

What size board does one need for these pretty vehicles?
-
What size board does one need for these pretty vehicles?
We normally use a 3'x3' table, but occasionally go bigger if we're doing a special scenario.
-
What size board does one need for these pretty vehicles?
For 28mm scale cars, like the Eureka ones, Maximillian1934 needs a 6 ft by 4ft table - otherwise it gets too crowded for us to be able to scream around the table.
We do allow cars to come off the table, they miss a turn and then come back on in the same area - I've played too many games like Wings of War where I get a bit too overexcited and fly off the table before I get to do anything... ;)
We have played with matchbox cars, btw - turning template/rules work just as well. Not as much fun in terms of look/modelling etc, but it does mean you can scale down the size of the table.
With Death Race, for example, things can get overcrowded on the table...
-
@Scurv - Yeah, we actually wrote a scenario like this for Wargames Ill a few years ago, related to our Back of Beyond gaming. Terrain etc moved along while the cars and the train remained relatively stationary. It became a matter of avoiding the terrain! This, was in turn, based on Alan Harrison's ideas for a russian ww2 Aerosani (propellor-driven snowmobile) game - which he ran at a Little Wars Melb when it was still at Club Tivoli.

At Salute 2016 Wargames Illustrated had a Mad Max game with similar mechanics. Everyone loved it!
I think we just didn't have time to think the mechanics through properly - and we were afraid that the 'thing' about our game (the turning template) would be made redundant in a game where you're pretty much going straight ahead. I think there's ways around that, though... i.e reducing turns when going at high speeds etc. We'll probably return to it when we do the campaign/supplement to Maximillian, I reckon it's too good an idea not to pursue further.
-
I have a few of the early car bodies, bought from Nic at CANCON a year ago,two of which are put together; having seen this thread I'll have to get on to them, and buy the rules :)

Sounds good! If you're at Cancon next year, keep an eye out for us - we're coming up to it. I think t'others are playing a 30YW campaign - and I'll be playing in the Tribal (our other Mana Press game) tournament (if it gets enough players!).
The Tribal tournament is being run on the first day (Friday), so I'll be free on the following couple of days - would be happy to have a game or two of Maximillian with punters.

Judging by the participants costumes, it seems there was more than a tip of the hat to Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Who can resist a participation game that features drag queens? I'll bet you were up all night sewing those outfits. :)

I never realized the overlap between the classic max movies and Priscilla, not sure I can look at either the same way again! lol
-
werekake - you guys planning on doing merchandise? I'd wear a black tee with the cover art or 'The Fury Road' movie poster on it.

We could probably do t-shirts of the Cover... Probly won't do Fury Road. ;)

... dunno? I didn't have anything to do with the game. The guys seem to be wearing the getup from characters in Mad Max 2 - The Road Warrior. Borne out by the scenario - the chase for the truck. It did look spectacular, though... WI had some great games that day.

Wargames Illustrated September has hit the stores here in South Oz, so I picked up a copy from Military Hobbies' new store in Unley (right across the road from a model railways specialist... Adelaide has a 'hobby hub'!) to check out the Pulp Gaming feature.
Nice write-up about Max '34, with sexy photos of miniatures... I think I'm going to go with an Australian theme for my cars and setting, although running liquor across the frozen Great Lakes into Prohibition USA in gunned-up, V12 powered 'Ginmobiles' is awfully tempting... ::)
-
Eventually all the ideas will cross-polinate and we'll end up with a 'Not the Cars That Ate Paris' variant. Adelaide would be the ideal venue for such a game, it's an unpleasant rural town whose raison d'etre is impossible to fathom. :)
For those of you unaware of the fillum....

Something to do with some Australians not wanting this particular colony built with slave convict labour, I believe... :D
Anyway, we shall see what comes to pass, gaming-wise. :) I'm also tempted to convert some '30's Grand Prix cars, particularly the 'Silver Arrows' of Mercedes and Auto-Union... There's something very appealing about the image of Tazio Nuvolari and Hermann Lang duelling around the old Neubergring, guns and engines blazing!
-
Hah. I hadn't seen this - I updated the other thread.
-
Got my rulebook and turn key yesterday.
Much to my utter delight I already have some cars done and painted and everything! At last, a f'ing new project that is like not going to derail my current project as all the work is already done!
Got mine, too, but alas, I have ordered a bunch of diecasts from various sources to trick out with the Eureka figs and accessories. (I had to have a Bentley 4.5 litre). So, major derailing ahead.
I'm also tempted to use the same figs, with some head-swaps, to crew my 1950's P.A. cars that I originally made for Machinas. While Machinas is a nice concept, I don't think it has the flexibility I want for the game I was contemplating. (It's more of a racing game than combat.) So, Maximilian 1954... coming soon...? ;)
