Anyone know any good books for information on these periods?
-
Are you looking for non-fiction or fiction? Not exactly what you are after but around the period is 1177BC by Eric H. Cline. I am reading it at the moment and it is very enthralling so far.
-
I would suggest starting Peter Connolly's "The Ancient Greece Of Odysseus" and also check out the Osprey titles, including the Myths and Legends range.
-
Michael Wood's "In Search of the Trojan War" is good. An old book now, but a newer edition came out e few years ago. Apparently it has some notes about more recent finds and research.
-
Check out 'Age of Bronze' graphic novel series, the collected comics from Eric Shanower. A really well researched and entertaining retelling of the Trojan War.stories. Great visuals, very inspiring.

Non-fiction or fiction, fantasy or otherwise, all works great. I'm using it as inspiration for a fantasy setting.
Thanks to everyone who's recommended stuff, I'm checking it out now.

Second vote for Peter Connolly - you'll get his stuff very cheap on amazon.
As an artist and reconstructive archaeologist he knew his stuff when it came to his book. Well worth purchasing or even just googling.

Bronze Age Military Equipment by Dan Howard

David Gemmell's Troy series were a good read (well the last book was a bit shakey, but he died before finishing it so can probably be forgiven). They are heroic fiction, so take a few liberties with history, but are interesting interpretations on the heroes and causes of the Trojan War. I like his representation of Odysseus particularly.

The Osprey Elite series title 'The Mycenaeans', by my friend Dr Nic Grguric, based on his archaeology degree honours thesis, is a very thorough and reliable treatment of the subject written from a wargamer's perspective.

Osprey have brought out a more up to date book on the era.

Ah yes! Kalliades and Banokles.

"Warrior in Bronze" by George Shipway is the only book I have ever read 4 times. It is set in the Trojan War era. I can recommend it as a great read as well as giving a feel for the period.

Looked very interesting but then I saw the price £105 at Amazon!

It might be worth the postage to order from Amazon US. The kindle edition is even more reasonable:

For an easy read on the post-Mycenaean period I'd recommend "Henchmen of Ares" by Josho Brouwers. As a (fundamentally) reworked doctoral thesis it's based on actual research, yet aiming at a general audience. So neither notes nor in-depth academic discussion.
Given the author's involvement with Ancient Warfare Magazine there are a couple of issues dealing with pre-classical Greece. Just have a look at their back catalogue here (https://www.karwansaraypublishers.com/ancient-warfare/aw-shop/single-issues.html).

Agreed they are wonderful books. Stella Gemmell who finished his last book has gone on to be quite the author herself.
