Found a lot of 40mm Perry Border Reivers in my mountain of lead....:)
I checked through the stuff and I think I have enough for a small skirmish multiplayer: 4 players each 8-10 minis....;)
Glued a few of the minis together and added some greenstuff.
(http://i.imgur.com/pjMDxp9l.jpg) (https://imgur.com/pjMDxp9)
The minis are really cool...okay I am kind of a Perry-Fan ....;)
(http://i.imgur.com/C6gZJOXl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/C6gZJOX)
After the initial thoughts I realised, that I needed some 40mm Scenery.... :o
28mm houses are too small.
(http://i.imgur.com/TXCD8sRl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/TXCD8sR)
So I builded a sabbot base...:D
(http://i.imgur.com/1MxL478l.jpg) (https://imgur.com/1MxL478)
...splashed some paint on it.
(http://i.imgur.com/X1a2XOOl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/X1a2XOO)
Oh...and then I realized that I needed some stock to grab for the reivers.
So I started to build something myself from Fimo.
(http://i.imgur.com/4c89PHbl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/4c89PHb)
Added a little greenstuff...
(http://i.imgur.com/T7NWNwql.jpg) (https://imgur.com/T7NWNwq)
Okay, looks a little like primitive art...:D
The project will be more of a slow burner, so do not expect too frequent updates....;)
Cheers,
Don
-
Looking forward to seeing this project move forward!

Very nicely done. The cows are a triumph. :)
-
Thanx, Malamute....;)
Okay, I started a Bastle House for my reivers to conquer or to hide in. In the great tradition of Jimbibbly....:)
Made a few little WIP pics. Everything handmade with a cutter....;)
(http://i.imgur.com/evzBGvel.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/evzBGve')
Squeezed the stone in my hands to get them more round.
(http://i.imgur.com/2QHyJm0l.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/2QHyJm0')
And than builded like Bob the Builder...;)
(http://i.imgur.com/VCVIGDIl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/VCVIGDI')
(http://i.imgur.com/sjVf2dhl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/sjVf2dh')
To get to the firstfloor I need a ladder.
(http://i.imgur.com/v1nrohjl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/v1nrohj')
In the morning I started putting some paint on the roof...
(http://i.imgur.com/qt0hFrtl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/qt0hFrt')
Here you can see the interior.
(http://i.imgur.com/3csJ1Ool.jpg) (https://imgur.com/3csJ1Oo)
Hope to get some paint on it in the evening.
Cheers,
Don
-
Yes! You are a real stonebuilder! Eager to see this Bastle House completed!
Cheers!
-
All wonderful as ever, and delivered at the speed of light as usual - do you never rest, man?! lol
-
Lovely stuff!
-
Brilliant work! :o
-
It all looks great. :)
-
Thanx gents....for all the nice comments.
Todays update is just a few strokes for the house.
(http://i.imgur.com/laYJBmDl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/laYJBmD)
Pretty cool is, that you can just take one partof the building and you have a decent farn house....:)
Cheers,
Don
-
Excellent! Putting the stones one by one makes it look very realistic!
Inspiring! Congratulations!
-
Brilliant :-*
-
Marvellous. The bastle house is tremendous and I love the cattle. I wasn't aware that cattle of this type were kept in the borders then.
-
Quite the effort here!
-
I wasn't aware that cattle of this type were kept in the borders then.
Since the 6th or 7th Centuries, possibly imported by the Vikings. Cute little chaps (and chapesses) aren't they?
-
Okay...pretty old Thread here...but I am going to the Do or Dice Convention in Rendsburg, Germany in the end of April. And want to get my Boder Reivers on the table....:)
So I have exactly 2 month to get everything ready.
My goal is get 3-4 troops with 6-8 man each, cattle and scenery and stuff to plunder and rob.
So here are some new additions to my Reivers. Slightly conversions with some greenstuff.
(http://i.imgur.com/RbtF7Wcl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/RbtF7Wc)
And one painted mini...:D
(http://i.imgur.com/TVBA67Gl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/TVBA67G)
The range is very imited, so I searched my lead pile for some 28mm-stuff wich I could bring to the table.
I found some Foundry Sea Dogs....right size in the upper body but to short in the legs and arms.
More like Hobbits....;)
(http://i.imgur.com/WYAfbfRl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/WYAfbfR)
So I took my cutter and chopped away.
(http://i.imgur.com/7uwwSy3l.jpg) (https://imgur.com/7uwwSy3)
And even started to get some greenstuff in the gaps.
(http://i.imgur.com/KxytD2zl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/KxytD2z)
I wonder if somebody will notice the difference on the gaming table in a bad way....:)
Cheers,
Don
-
To nights work....:)
Started building a black house.
First cutting styrofoam bricks.
(http://i.imgur.com/HRk9TCYl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/HRk9TCY)
And then building stone by stone....;)
(http://i.imgur.com/fOh2u4Gl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/fOh2u4G)
Started the roof....kind of....:D
(http://i.imgur.com/aWPFx5ll.jpg) (https://imgur.com/aWPFx5l)
Cheers,
Don
-
Nicely done! Will that roof be turf or thatch?
-
Great looking project, will have to try your building method.
What rules are you using?
-
Thanx gents....;)
...turf or thatch?
Probably turf with some gras on top of it.
What rules are you using?
Something homebrew for the convention based on Triumph & Tragedy by Driscoles.
Builded a small well today. Just a little plastic card and some left over styrodor bricks.
(http://i.imgur.com/7qhzvTYl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/7qhzvTY)
And some brick laying...
(http://i.imgur.com/Dkyzz63l.jpg) (https://imgur.com/Dkyzz63)
And managed to paint one more trooper.
(http://i.imgur.com/vF3muNYl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/vF3muNY)
Stay tuned....;)
Cheers,
Don
-
Splendid, It will be very interesting to see the re-scaled 28mm figures once painted up alongside the real40mm ones.
-
This is a great thread. I must say I'm a bit taken-aback by your analysis of the Foundry Sea Dogs. I had always thought that they were one of Foundry's nicest ranges.
-
Nice, subdued tones, neat painting and an excellent face expression! Well done!
-
Fantastic
-
Gosh! The house and the livestock are formidable!
-
Thank you for your encouraging comments....:)
Todays work saw mostly greenstuff conversions on my Sea Dogs from Froundry. Sorry still too early for paint. Needs more layers of the green stuff...
(http://i.imgur.com/FQ8zl3pl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/FQ8zl3p)
I found an old Foundry blister in the lead pile. 8 times the same archer....;(
Okay cutting of a few arms and legs and tried to see if I can do somthing different then "archer".
Lots of headswaps with left over heads from teh Perry minis.
(http://i.imgur.com/iCWSZqRl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/iCWSZqR)
The 5th mini from the left is the original. No.2 is a 40mm Perry.
I know the great sword on the 3rd guy is little over the top....:D
And you can see my aproach: first inserting plastic pipes for construction...like bones and then some greenstuff on top of it.
And my borderer per day...:)
(http://i.imgur.com/WV6PVPhl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/WV6PVPh)
Could have painted the trousers better. But have to go to bed...feel little sick...;(
Cheers,
Don....:)
-
Brilliant stuff!
-
Okay...here are some more reivers....:)
Converted two Perry-models in new poses and other weapons....big swords.
(http://i.imgur.com/ixG9FrFl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/ixG9FrF)
And with some paint.
(http://i.imgur.com/nJeHyqal.jpg) (https://imgur.com/nJeHyqa)
Third from the right is a Foundry figure.
Cheers,
Don
-
Todays work ....more scenery stuff.
Paintd more on my bastle house.
(http://i.imgur.com/3R6Kra8l.jpg) (https://imgur.com/3R6Kra8)
And to get mroe options for scenarios I builded a fighting plattform for the roof...:)
(http://i.imgur.com/bX2jn8il.jpg) (https://imgur.com/bX2jn8i)
Cheers,
Don
-
Looking good!
-
Wonderful stuff. :)
-
Thanx gents...:)
Searched today in my local hobbystore for some minis wich would siute my 40mm Perry reivers.
Found some very cool Fenryll stuff....:)
(http://i.imgur.com/76sXDAGl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/76sXDAG)
And a few grave stones. Put a little styrofoam under and they do the trick me thinks.
(http://i.imgur.com/iPhzCoIl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/iPhzCoI)
And some minis I started painting today...still pretty WIP.
(http://i.imgur.com/Js1d4vUl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/Js1d4vU)
And one more conversion pic: one mini...3 weapons...:)
(http://i.imgur.com/9vYbK3Zl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/9vYbK3Z)
Cheers,
Don

So...toay sees a little mixed work on more small houses, two new conversions and some panting progress.
First two more black houses.
(http://i.imgur.com/0QsL3Zil.jpg) (https://imgur.com/0QsL3Zi)
Then I started to get 2 Leaadadventure Breugelburg pigs up to scale...:)
(http://i.imgur.com/KGpChfvl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/KGpChfv)
And lastly a comparision shot of more minis: Foundry Seadogs, Fenryll, Leadadventure, Perry-40mm....;)
(http://i.imgur.com/zverY9ol.jpg) (https://imgur.com/zverY9o)
Cheers,
Don
-
Aw, missed this earlier. Cracking stuff all round 8)
-
Thanx, Jim.
Here are the huts painted....;)
(http://i.imgur.com/9SAw3Oyl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/9SAw3Oy)
Cheers,

Too quick lol
-
Really tremendous - both the figures and the buildings. It must have been fascinating then, with Hadrian's Wall in a much better state of preservation (before General Wade had the B6318 built) and the Debateable Lands a haven for rogues. As I've previously mentioned, my late mother was from a reiver family, so I'm biased.
-
Wonderful work. And very challenging to find figures and accessories in 40mm.
-
What an interesting project. I’ve often looked at those Perry 40mm Reivers and wondered if I should 8) :-*
-
Me too lol
-
Nice work all around. I like the conversions but I really like the buildings, build and painting. :-* :-*
LB
-
Top work love them.
-
And very challenging to find figures and accessories in 40mm.
Sadly you are absolutely right...
But I took the challenge and started to build more stuff this week. Mainly sheep and angus...:)
Used FIMO Soft as a core.
(http://i.imgur.com/JY8GMFYl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/JY8GMFY)
Took some toothpicks and cut them for the legs....;)
(http://i.imgur.com/0apR2y8l.jpg) (https://imgur.com/0apR2y8)
And a few of the new cattle...
(http://i.imgur.com/2CLByvbl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/2CLByvb)
Even tried my hand at 2 Galloglass.
(http://i.imgur.com/mKLTVHql.jpg) (https://imgur.com/mKLTVHq)
Took a lot of time but I am not really convinced with these.....:(
(http://i.imgur.com/T8YL0esl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/T8YL0es)
And managed to convert a few more men for 40mm gaming.
(http://i.imgur.com/AwsCNZql.jpg) (https://imgur.com/AwsCNZq)
Stay tuned...:D
Cheers,
Don
-
More lovely work :-*
I’m guessing you’ve read George MacDonald Frasers’ Border Reivers?
-
Very interesting conversions, all your work is so original!
Following this thread with great interest!
Cheers!
-
This project is awesome and has got me thinking. Particularly love the conversions on heroic 28mm figures.
-
Just found this thread and you've done a fantastic job on the conversions and painting! Keep up the great work!
-
Very effective original sculpts and conversions. You have talent, Sir.
-
Those Gallowglass are exceptional, I might suggest slightly longer mail shits but other than tha I am thoroughly impressed.
-
Both longer and shorter mail shirts were in use by 16th century gallowglass.
-
Thanx for all the comments.
Today just a short update: a ruined hamlet...;)

Looking perfect! Love it :-*
-
Okay...with a little pause...here are the additions to the Border Reivers.
First some new conversions. Used a few bits from the Frost Grave barbarian sprue.
Dog and goose are from a 1:35 set.
(http://i.imgur.com/vylhjCNl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/vylhjCN)
Finished some cattle.
(http://i.imgur.com/vzstPJYl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/vzstPJY)
...a few sheep.
Unfortunatly these are tooo big...;(.
(http://i.imgur.com/t5Ya5Jbl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/t5Ya5Jb)
And a few mision markers to rob and steal.
(http://i.imgur.com/akqgFrCl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/akqgFrC)
And a group shot, from the troops so far...;)
(http://i.imgur.com/OqBrz5Ol.jpg) (https://imgur.com/OqBrz5O)
Sunday is the first playtest...:D
Trying to shoot some pics.
Cheers,
Don
-
Thank you for sharing. This has been most enjoyable watching you put this all together.
Almost got me to start doing it too!
-
Cracking project and a great update 8)
-
Lovely stuff, especially the ruin. Useful for so many periods/scenarios.
-
Just amazing how many different characters you have created in 40mm. You have sufficient for some good raiding and cattle theft !
-
So, the first playtest for the Border Reivers happend last week on sunday.
And probably bigger then on the Do or Dice convention in the end of April....:)
We played with some heavily houseruled Disposable Heroes rules... with the card activation inspired by Donnybrooke.
Each player got a gang with 6-7 minis. The minis had to be grouped around a central flag marker. Each Border Reivers in the Gang could do his own thing: grab a sheep, fire a crossbow and so...
And for every succesful action you got victory points.
So I had to gamemaster there are not too many pics, sorry....;)
Here is were the game started..
(http://i.imgur.com/yDp1kIBl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/yDp1kIB)
And with a little bit more light.
(http://i.imgur.com/Hl8NMqpl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/Hl8NMqp)
First turns. The 3 scotts starat moving to the central Bastle House wich was manned by one of the english players.
(http://i.imgur.com/S7nlydWl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/S7nlydW)
Its quite on the grave yard...
(http://i.imgur.com/wZ6jwTql.jpg) (https://imgur.com/wZ6jwTq)
At some point the scot players found the two ladders I had placed on the battlefield.
(http://i.imgur.com/2L9Brbhl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/2L9Brbh)
In the Bastelhouse fierce hand to hand fights break out.
(http://i.imgur.com/jCOsqVhl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/jCOsqVh)
So. Thats it for now with the Border Reivers. Perhaps I will add a few things in the upcoming days....;)
When you are around in Northern Germany in the end of April you have the cahnce to game this at the "Do or Dice" Convention in Rendsburg...:)
Cheers,
Don
-
Loving watching this take shape, I ahve my own 28mm Reiver collection but ths makes me wish I had hung onto the 40mm I bought then sold as there were not enough varients. Well done.
-
Very nice table setup! So beautiful landscape and buildings! :-*
Must have been a very exciting game! Cheers!
-
Okay...here are some more reivers....:)
Converted two Perry-models in new poses and other weapons....big swords.
(http://i.imgur.com/ixG9FrFl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/ixG9FrF)
And with some paint.
(http://i.imgur.com/nJeHyqal.jpg) (https://imgur.com/nJeHyqa)
Third from the right is a Foundry figure.
Cheers,
Don
Wait...Foundry's Sea Dogs range mixes in with the Perry Border Reivers?
-
Wonderful table, had a look in Rendsburg. So much details, self-sculpted animals. A pleasure to watch. Rendsburg is always a pleasure, because Don is presenting his treasures. The rest is also great.
-
A fabulous collection. Looks so good in 40mm. Fabulous modelling.
-
Wait...Foundry's Sea Dogs range mixes in with the Perry Border Reivers?
In bulk / stature, yes. In height, not quite. If you read the thread from the beginning, you will see that Don has inserted extra length into the legs with cunning conversions, to raise the 28mm figures up to the same height as the 40mm Perry figures.
That said, I’m always surprised when I see 40mm figures in the hand, that they’re really not THAT much bigger than 28mm figures. Particularly when many 28mm figures, including some of the larger ‘character’ figures Mike Owen sculpted for Foundry’s Sea Dogs range, are actually a lot more like 32mm - 35mm in reality ::) :)
-
Missed this the first time round and I thought it deserved a fresh outing
Stunning work all round :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
