Title: Micromunda / Urban War Clau Tactics Nano.(Templates)
Post by: Stroezie on 23 September 2017, 05:47:28 PM
Ok folks,
the Age of Tyrants kickstarter is about to start shipping the miniatures so I decided to start making some new terrain so I could use said miniatures to play some 6mm Urban War Clau Tactics / Necromunda style games.

This thread will document the construction of my new Necromunda style industrial board, the painting of the miniatures once they arrive  and hopefully the games that will be played with them.

First though I'd like to give a shout out to Darryl Hunt of the exelent blog Daxio's Uneventfull Day. I totally stole copied his idea for Necromunda buildings and then used my trusty shrink ray on them😋.

Now, what did I build so far?
Lets take a look.

So , four buildings, four walkways and a platform, not to shabby.

I plan on doing two more buildings, one medium and one large, two more walkways without cover and three extra long walkways plus supports.

Here's a few pictures to give you an idea of the kind of setups I'm going to use them for, I threw in some random figures from my collection to give you a sense of the scale.

Another benefit of this construction method is that the smaller buildings fit inside the larger ones for easy storage.

Apart from the buildings and walkways I've also begun assembling some bits and bobs to build a few more industrial/machinery looking
pieces.
More on those next time.

well ok then just a teaser picture

That's it for now, as usual critiques, comments or questions are more than welcome.

Cheers,
Stroezie.

Nice buildings.keep it up
Those Klau would be good for 15mm also.
I wonder, Are they sold separately?  Have to check. As i didn't pitch in the KS,
Too many minis in the backlog to paint... unfortunately  ;)

As a 15mm gamer, every time I see your threads I want to go smaller... But I won't!

Micromunda Wasn't Built In A Day...

...but the first stage is done anyway😎

I thought I'd share some more pictures with you so you can see/guess at, the materials before I blackbomb the lot.

First up the initial set of buildings and walkways

I also decided to spice up the buildings with some electrical wiring and some airfans.

These pilons are for when one walkway just isn't long enough.
I may end up putting some more greeblies on them as they are a bit plain looking atm. then again maybe not...   we'll see.

Next some of the more industrial looking bits.

A large storage tank/tower

which can split into two smaller ones

and as I was taking the pictures it suddenly occured to me that if you put the ring back on it could also function as a landing pad for "Get to da choppa" scenarios.

a small storage tank, probably for some kind of strange bio-agent or something

A water recycling plant

and last but not least a few more generic pieces

Now, if the weather holds, I should be able to prime these during the weekend and if all goes well get some paint on them by the end of next week.

I will also begin texturing one of the place mats/boards with magnetic paint to look like a concrete floor and start looking into ways to weather the other place mat into a less shiny/ slightly rusty version of itself. (any and all tips how to go about doing this are more than welcome)

Cheers,
Stroezie.

Lovely work as usual ,my friend, :D :D :D
Did you do those fans with Green stuff?

For the paint job you might want to use a technique I use ( i'm working on something similar but for 15mm , each peice is based on a 15 x 15 cm mdf base, so it can be used to build a 2ft x 2ft board, will show pics asap).
Spray black base,, then overspray lightly with grey sandable primer, then get a white can & slightly press the nozzle, this will cause the paint to sputter & spray erratic (?) dots of paint. Repeat this with black & finally with a red brown sandable primer.
This will yield a very nice effect.... try it out for yourself.

yes, they are actually really easy to make.(so easy I don't even bother to make a mold for them)
Just squeese in a little ball of putty cut it like a pie and push one end of the slices down. Finish of with either a tiny ball of putty or a plastic rivet like I did here.

The painting method is for the concrete I presume?
I'll give it a try and see if I can make it work for me.

Thanks for the reply,
As you say very easy to do.
Yes it will work for crete.... though the more reddish brown you add the more rust you'll have, so you'll end up with rusted steel.

Once years back i had bought a ready mixed texture can with white black & grey paint in it.
Never found it again but it was great for crete.
Perhaps you can find one.

Well I managed to finish painting the buildings and walkways,
a little lick of paint makes all the difference don't you think?  8)

And of course I couldn't resist playing around with a quick setup to get an idea how things will look once to whole thing's finished.

I'm afraid the lighting has washed out the colors on the buildings somewhat, they actually look a lot more splotchy and rundown in real life, maybe once I tone down the glare from the board it'll show up better in the pictures.

I'd also like to add some posters/graffiti ,does anybody knows of a good source?

That's it for now, time to get to painting the industrial machinery and I've been thinking about maybe doing some modular canals to add some more depth to the board so stay tuned.  ;)

Cheers,
Stroezie.

Great work my friend,
A coat of paint does make a great deal of difference.
The light blue is something not often seen. I like it !!!!

Don't know whether you did it or not ( can't make it out) but touching up with a small foam piece with white, cobalt blue & black will make it even better.

Graffiti at that scale? Your best bet would be to print thumbnails on a laser printer. OR like i did for epic banners , draw large and reduce on a colour photocopier NOT reduce on a pc as it will reduce resolution.Antenocities have some nice Infinity themed  ones.

Hope this helps
keep it up

Well I finished painting the industrial/machinery pieces and the concrete floor.

It's finally starting to look like something 😁

Well that's it then...     the board is finished...   right?

Weeeelllllll....

see here's the thing...

while looking for inspiration I came across the exellent Yaktribe forums (some really awesome builds on there, check them out  Link) and it turnes out in a hive you can go up, but you can also go down so...

Sump canals here I come !!!

The first nine tiles giving me the same size of board as the concrete floor (ie. 37x37 cm)

What a great build - and so small as well!!

The sewers look cool.

As to posters and stuff - try google images to see what you can find - almost any image you like will work, as you will be printing it very small.

Do you have some small piece of scatter terrain, to add in to break up the flat areas of the base board? Almost anything would work, drums, boxes, rubbish, pipes, fences. Just small things that 1 or 2 figures can get behind to  get a bit of cover.

Work on the lowest part of my hive continues, I'm hoping to finish the building part somewhere around the end of next week and then it'll be on to the painting...

I've also started sculpting some fauna and flora to bring a little more life to my canals

Big rats and spiders, but nothing any experienced sump dweller can't handle

And some shrooms, one can never have enough shrooms  ;)

I'm thinking of maybe doing some carnivorous plants and some kind of lurking sump-monster to, no idea what that's going to look like yet, suggestions are always welcome.

Cheers,
Stroezie.

This is SO cool!

I love small scale minis (and terrain) and this is tiny but still detailed. Amazing work with the green stuff!

What size are those squares you've built? 15x15cm?
Title: Re: Micromunda / Urban War Clau Tactics Nano.(More Sump.)
Post by: Stroezie on 12 October 2017, 12:16:34 PM
Thanks guys!

@von Lucky

Working on the mantrap as we speak :D
For the water creature I think I'll keep the Watcher in the water for if/when I do a larger basin but I've found a smaller jellyfish type creature in the Necromunda bestiary that I think I may have a go at next.

@Ockman

the tiles are 12.3x12.3cm exactly but that is because they have to fit in with another build otherwise I would probably have gone with 15x15cm like you said.

I finished building my Nanomunda sump board!

I may have gone a bit overboard detailing the canals  8)

Here are a few more pictures so you can see the build before I blackbomb it.

And now it's time to start thinking about how I'm going to paint all of this.

I'd like to try and go for this look for the decking

Mine won't look nearly as good but hey "aim for perfection, settle for good enough"  :P

If you know of any good tutorials for this kind of thing, please feel free to share, cause at the moment I really don't have a clue how to even start.

I think I'll experiment on a few scrap pieces first and see what's realistic for my skill level.
Hopefully I'll have something more to share with you soon.

Cheers,
Stroezie.

You could try using sandpaper for the surface texture, then slop some glossy washes over everything else with shades of brown, black, and sepia?
Title: Re: Micromunda / Urban War Clau Tactics Nano.(finished building board)

You could also try washes, then dripping water droplets on, which might give that effect. This project's very cool.

Looking good my friend,
You good do as Jagg suggested or you good use a technique called wet on wet ,like what I did on my Mesonai vehicles...
Do not be disheartened, though not an easy technique it can be mastered with patience.
Just ask if you want to know how to do it.

http://castrarunis.blogspot.com.mt/search?q=mesonai (http://castrarunis.blogspot.com.mt/search?q=mesonai)

Btw that's a superb piece of terrain, looks like pastels or MIG weathering stuff may have been used on it.
Truly a work of art. Do you know where you found it ?

@zrunelord

I like the looks of that. Maybe not for the floor but it would be cool on some buildings I'll have to look into this wet on wet technique of yours.
Btw those Meso nai look awesome, really digging the vibrant color scheme.

As to the example terrain piece I shared, it's by a guy called Shibboleth sadly all his pictures were on Photobucket so now can't be seen.

However if you google Shibboleth Sumptown Chronicles and switch to Google images, you'll see a lot of his stuff.

I had some spare time between trains at work so I started working on my first gang.
The minis are Dark Realm Miniatures Jungle Fighters.
There are only 5 poses so at the moment I'm just adding berets and do-rags to differentiate them somewhat, later I'll probably do some weapon swaps once I get an idea of what weapon loadouts I'm going to need.

Here's a pic of the regular gangers

So shotguns, sword and knife, sword and gun and grenade launcher.
I gave one of the guys with the grenade launchers a sword but I think I may end up redoing that as it did not come out quite as I had envisionned it.

I also did two heavy weapons, a heavy bolter and a heavy stubber, I included the original figure so you could see what they started off as.

After sorting through my leadpile I'm thinking of starting three gangs the Orlocks as seen above, Ratskins and house Goliath.
As I have never played Necromunda before any tips on a good balanced starting force for any of these gangs are more then welcome. It might also help guide me as to what figures to try and model so do feel free to chime in.

Cheers,
Stroezie.

A new meaning to the word small !!!! ;)

Thanks for the tip Stroezie, will look him up.....

Wet on wet is traditionally used for watercolour paintings where the paper is flooded with colour then more colour is added whilst it is wet. So the mix is done is controlled random patterns. On models you do not have an absorbent base so the colours act differently. Try it , it is both fun & satisfying to do.

You can always pm or mail me , off course , if you need help.

Thanks for the offer zrunelord, if I need any help you'll be the first to know  ;)

For the wet on wet, do you use a drying retardant in your first layer of paint or just use 2 brushes at the same time and keep switching between colors as you go? (kind of like wet blending)
Title: Re: Micromunda / Urban War Clau Tactics Nano.(House Orlock)
Post by: zrunelord on 16 October 2017, 10:43:02 AM
Welcome my friend,
No retardant , just 2 or 3 brushes OR simply one brush & clean between the different colours.
You'll learn to be quick but you will have time , it doesn't dry instantly.
I use this technique on minis also , in order to blend colours.

Post by: Stroezie on 18 October 2017, 04:57:11 PM
I finished my first gang, Orlocks.
Here they are in all their teeny tiny glory

And an other shot of them trying to score some sump cattle so they can start their own Hive Guys franchise and start earning some income :p

But trouble is a brewing in the underhive as rumors abound House Goliath is also looking to open up shop in the neighberhood.

I'm really having a blast doing these tiny conversions but after I finish these I think it's high time I got back to painting the sump canals.

Cheers,
Stroezie.

They came out nice Stroezie,
Hard to imagine they're so small .... got me thinking what I would use to make 15mm Gangs.

Keep it up

It's madness, madness I tell you! Converting such small models... utterly mad!

...and AMAZING!

And the sump canal board is done!
Over all I'm quite happy with how it turned out.
It was a bit of a compromise between weathering it and keeping the thing even enough for the magnetic paper to have enough flat surface to grip onto.
In the end I decided to sponge paint some rust effects on the tiles and use some washes to dirty it up some more. I'll be adding some more dirt, debris and general litter as scatter terrain later.

Here's the whole board put together

Which seperates into nine modular tiles

Here's a few closer pics of the sump canals so you can see the little details

I also managed to finish the second gang,

House Goliath (Wasteland Gangers/Warriors from Microworld miniatures)

The shanties in the background are from Angel Barracks and I have a few vague ideas of making some platforms for them to turn them into a kind of vertical favela, we'll see...

First though I want to do some scatter terrain as Necromunda, and imo skirmish games in general, needs lots of cover for minis to hide behind.
I already have a collection of the usual oil drums, crates and jersy barriers but I'd like to add some things more in character with the setting.
For now I'm planning to do some loot tokens, rubble barricades, exploding mushrooms and heat vents. (feel free to add any cool idea's you may have to this list.)

Ok, time to go stat out those gangs now so I can try to get a game on and who knows maybe we'll even see the ever elusive batrep show up in the future.  :-[

Cheers,
Stroezie.

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys, I'll keep building stuff without it but its always nice to feel apreciated ;)

@Ockman

The ladders are made from plastic needlework canvas (aka. granny grating).

Stroezie.

I have been told Necromunda needs lots of stuff for gangers to hide behind.
Ok then lets build some scatter terrain   8)

I started with a classic to get me going,
everybody has done the stack of pipes, quick and easy linear terrain what's not to like?
Next were a set of crates and canisters on pallets from Angel Barracks which I magnetised and put on some magnetic paper disks so they can be used as both scatter terain and loot counters.
The last items in this picture are a form of fungus that explodes when fired upon ideal for placing next to the previous loot counters.  >:D

Then I decided to recycle some of the offcuts littering my workstation into some rubble baricades.

For some reason only the Emperor knows tyres and cogs are stacked together in the underhive, but I thought it looked cool so...
The other items in this pic are my take on the ubiquitous Necromunda air vents.
Lots of fun/superglued fingers making these.

And lastly some slime pits to make running across those walkways a more interesting choice.
Oh and I almost forgot, I made two hills/risers, one of which you can see below to. The sides are also magnitic and the ladders are removable. I will be making some other stuff like stairs, ramps, terminals and junction boxes to attach to them to.

As you can see the board is filling up nicely

I have read through the Necromunda rules and have started reading Inquisimunda to.
I think once I've played a few games of Necromunda and gotten the hang of the rules I'll probably be expanding to Inquisimundan simply because there are so many cool minis out there and knowing myself it won't be long before I start looking at ways to bring them into my games.

So next on my to do list:
First make some measuring sticks, because at the reduced scale I'm going to be playing one unit of movement is 7mm so 28mm base move, thats a little finnicky to use a normal tape measure don't you think.
Then templates, again at the reduced scale, don't know if I'm just going to print them out on card or try something a bit more fancy, we'll see.
And of course, stat out my two gangs so we can start to rumble!!!

Cheers,
Stroezie.

Excellent work there. 28mm movement is tiny, might even be worth making them look like a "T" to be able to hold them (with the top is 28mm and the handle longer).

I made some templates , a range stick and some counters, If all goes well I'll be able to get my first game in somewhere next week   8)

I decided to mount the templates on sticks so my fat fingers would be out of the way when looking to see which figures are under the template, at 6mm it gets a bit fiddely some times :P. (Thanks for the tip von Lucky)
As an added bonus they can also be used as close range range sticks.

Cheers,
Stroezie.

Kudos for finishing the project Strozie ...
You are completely mental ( in a good sort of way, off course )  :D :D :D

I'd put you up for the Guinness book of Records , for the smallest board & minis ever !!!!

Oh and i like the idea of the templates on a stick. You even painted them in stripes. Brilliant 😎😎😎

Just would like to add that this idea would be great for all scales, especially to avoid fiddling around with templates in between buildings.

Hello again Strozie,
Check out my last post.
I think you can implement the pipe / corridor idea easily enough

Btw have the Urban war clau come out? Thanks.
