Title: 10mm sci-fi (or any era) UK manufacturers??
Post by: JamesValentine on 03 October 2017, 10:34:34 AM
hey all.
My mate keeps pushing me to collect some figures from a game called Dropzone.
now I like the vehicles but the infantry aren't doing much for me and I'd love some older tanks to use for resistance.
also regular vehicles and terrain would be great.

does anyone know many 10mm figures, vehicles, terrain you can get in the UK?
sci-fi primarily but wwii, cold war, modern etc will also be of interest to me.
I am obviously aware of Hawk Wargames.
and I know Brigade games does 10mm terrain pieces

anything else?

Firestorm planettfall from spartan games ?

I know SG went out of business recently but I suppose you could find a lot of stuff at some UK retailers or Ebay.

you can find some tanks at a cheap price with the plastic bones Reaper CAV range (available at miniatures heroes or Ebay too)

...and Clix Mechwarrior where there are a lot of infantry and tanks in a soft plastic that can be easily repainted

all this stuff is sci fi 10mm ;)

TT combat and 4ground have since cool 10mm scenery.

I believe reapers CAV infantry are 10mm but don't quote me on that.

Wasn't B5 Groppos 10mm? LONG out of production, but was fairly popular in the UK, I hear. I also see on eBay from time to time, and last time I tried a recce of same, wasn't going for crazy lucre.

Yep, Reper Cav is 10mm and so was the Babylon 5 stuff.

I do all my sci-fi small scale gaming with rebased mechwarrior clix.  The scale isn't perfectly consistent across the rather large range, but it's all 10mm'ish somewhere between 1/144 and 1/160.  Harder to find these days but if you ask around your local club/group/shop, it's likely you'll find someone with a bucket they'll sell you cheaply.

Some 15mm (and even HO scale) Terrain works quite nicely if you modify the doors slightly, especialy industrial type stuff.  Check out Proxie Models' very affordable building wall kits. I've converted a couple to 10mm by splitting the front doors in half  and they look quite good.

I've built some great, cheap 10mm buildings from Tape Cases glued on top of each other and greebled up.  If you're interested I can find some pics of this stuff.

about the scenery, all the N scale stuff is very useful

you can find a lot of this on Ebay, especially cheap plastic buildings from Outland models for example

for the industrial stuff, Tomytec is your friend (if you're ready to spend a little much money)

You can also use any card scenery for 28mm etc, just scale the pdf when you print it, or using a photocopier. I did this with some Fat Dragon tiles to use with 10mm dungeon crawls.

I had completely forgotten about B5 gropos. I still have B5 Wars second edition and a few models in my loft (although the last time I looked, some of the metal wasn't holding up too well  :()

The Tomy and Outland stuff is pretty cool.  Take a look on AliExpress and look up KiWarm.  Really basic kits but really cheap.  Less than $10 each shipped.

Here's the stuff I was mentioning earlier.

The Proxie Models buildings.

The gothic walls are oop, but the others are still available and there's some good ruins.

Here's some Cassette tape buildings I made on Commission a while back. I'm rather proud of how they came out.

The Necromundicon article that inspired me.

Lastly, here's an Alpha Strike battle report using the free GF9 buildings we printed up and based.

You may find some useful items in 6mm lists, too.  Irregular makes a line of alien infantry that are dead ringers for Jawas, for example.  They also have a suspiciously familiar line of "Attack Bots" that look like they would work in 10mm scale.  Instead of man-sized they would be R2 sized, but they could work.

Thanks! Doesn't help with my mania for collecting trash to see such use from stuff I HAVE thrown away.  ;)

Man, that Construx(Corrected: Robotix) stuff sure can find itself useful, no? Always thought I should chop in half and greeble walls for casting, but my friend that did some casting has pretty much put that aside.

Thanks! Owe you a package, and a bit closer to getting it to you.

Hey Doug,
No worries.  Yeah, the Robotix stuff is pretty great.  It's nice that at 10 or 6mm the female hex connection is a good size for a doorway.

Those tape buildings above used alot of nice greebles with a fair bit of modding. However simpler ones can look pretty darn good too.  Here's some I made quickly as sort of a proof-of-concept for a standard buildign technique and ended up trading to a friend of mine.

Far fewer pieces but still a nice look. Shameless plug, but if folks are interested I can make more of these for a reasonable price, they're even light enough that shipping across the pond might not be completely ridiculous.

As mentioned, Pendraken makes some, as do Minifigs (Miniature Figurines), and Timecast too.

Glad I avoided the Gropos stuff.  Some was decent looking, but the selection was a bit lacking as I recall, and the prices were exhorbitant.

A lot of the Cold War stuff can be used as is, or converted to Sci-Fi, without too much trouble.

I've been thinking about Horizon Wars and wanted to make a post much like the OP, hence the bump. The Pendraken sci-fi range looks fun so I think I'd go for that and mix in soime moderns or what have you. I like the Pendraken aliens but without shooting I'm not sure how they would work in HR. Ideally I'd like to see a hi tech force with low numbers of elite units vs low tech force with more but less effective units. The 'pathetic aesthetic' appeals to me at least as much as elites who barely fail a dice roll. Probably linked psychologically to many defeats to Space Muhreens during my formative years.

As the choice of 10mm sci-fi is thin on the ground I'd be interested in what 6mm or 15mm stuff would successfully scale up/down.

EDIT: the Vanguard 6mm range looks so good I think I could go exclusively for that. Even their 3mm range looks promising but they need to go beyond the one race/force they currently offer. Apparently they are going to see how they sell, so fingers crossed.
