Title: 50 cent challenge - strange steel towers - 22/10 FINISHED!
Post by: Gunbird on 14 October 2017, 01:45:57 PM
I picked up a lot box at the Goodwill store this week, containing finger skateboard scenery, Matchbox copy cars, Matchbox scenic stuff, some Playmobil mand a set of girder ish towers. 36 items in all for 7 euros, so that falls nicely into the 50m cents challenge catagory.

There are no markings on them, but I suspect they are for supporting a Matchbox playset bit of track? I really don't know. It had some sort of pin system on the underside and on the top. I cut those off and filed it smooth.

I thought it needed more so grabbed my spool of 1.5mm soldering wire and added a thick electrical cable from the base to the top, and tacked it in place.

Added another greebly on top, did a little clean up and everything is setting and drying now. Will give a good alcohol rub down in the evening before basecoating it, as for the first time in a long time, I feel like painting again :)

Looks promising! I'm guessing the Pak38 didn't come in the charity shop job lot!

Haha, no, it did not, it is for my Germans and the 50mm PaK bunker I'm working on. In all of the charity shops I've been this year (which are many) I only found a half built 1/72 OV-10 for 1 euro that I took just for the parts, a 1/24 Peterbuilt truck that they asked 40 euros for (and I did not buy) and a 1/24 wood kit of a boat that was taped shut by someone and they would not open unless I paid first, so I could not check the contents....so I passed. Train stuff however I do find on occasion.

Those towers do look good with the simple tarting up.

A few years ago I found the Airfix D-Day 60th anniversary set in a charity shop for £6. It contained 4 boxes of soldiers and a raft of kits only two of which had been started and trashed. Now I've found I'm into 20mm late WW2 wargaming completely by accident....

Nice find OBR :)

Halfway now, waiting for all the thinner to evaporate (while I'm not in the room)

Not my best, but considering I have not painted a light in ages, and this alone took me 3 tries, it will have to do. It's the same on both towers. I'm leaving it alone for a few days to let the varnish rest and set.

Is there a 50cent challenge happening? If so I think I can jump on in.

Looking like something good to start with those.

Nothing official, I started it, feel free to join in. There are no prizes, just peronal glory and the satisfaction you have turned junk into something useful.

And now it is done :)

Brilliant paint work on those!  :-*

How did you do the rust effect?

And consider the gauntlet thrown down. I have a piece I got for free. I'll have a look and see what I can do to it this week!

How did you do the rust effect?

A brown paint, a orange paint, a brown wash and a enamel wash, and a bit of sponge. It's really simple and quick (if you speed up drying times with a hairdryer or a fan like I do)

And consider the gauntlet thrown down. I have a piece I got for free. I'll have a look and see what I can do to it this week!

Looking forward to it!
