Title: I am a hoarder with short attention span
Post by: Antonio J Carrasco on 23 October 2017, 06:23:51 AM
Ok, I have a problem. A big one: if a period/miniatures range takes my fancy I can't stop myself and will convince me that I need to start a new project. I will buy rulesets, books -for background- and miniatures. Maybe I will paint a couple of figures; even a whole unit, perhaps. Then, a new project will pop up and I will forgot about the previous one! Months (or years!) later, while checking my boxes, I will find the figures I bought and will try to remember what was about. Did I intend 18-figures battalions? Or was it just I didn't calculate correctly how many figures I needed (which is more common in my case that you can imagine!)? With any luck I will put them back in their box and forgot -again!- about them. Sometimes, though, the finding rekindled my interest in the project, and more figures/rulesets/books will be bought before the new shiny toys distract me -again!!!-.

So far the only projects that I have, more or less, on track are Macedonians and opponets for To the Strongest; Seven Years War Austrians -only need a couple of additional Horse regiments, and they will be finished, hooray!-; Napoleonics -those will take until my death, I think-; and the Indian Mutiny (Iron Duke range has undone me)

Besides those I have a hoard of unpainted lead/plastic that, if I would interred with it once I pass away, the archeological profession will be mistyfied by the 'treasure'. Who knows? Maybe I will be considered some kind of 'king' or 'warlord'!  lol

Welcome to the club pull up a chair, sit and order whatever is tickling you currently.

We understand your problem, many of us share it, don't  expect to find a cure.

Could be worse!

Just like AA the first steps is to acknowledge the problem... or so I hear. However, the reality is unlike AA here you'll get lots of people with the same issue I suspect but few ideas for a cure. :)

I had to clean out my closet this weekend, for the room to be decorated. Lets just say the Mrs saw multiple projects in there, some from over 20 years ago bought and not started... She likely may start questioning my continued purchases now. :(

Oh and just for good measure:

Something a lot of folks struggle with.

At some point, simply have that inner discussion with yourself: "Will I, in all actuality, ever genuinely paint and use this item/these items?"

Then start selling that stuff.  There's nothing more wasteful or sad that wargaming minis which sit in a box for 20 years and get sold off in an estate sale when you kick the bucket. On occasion you'll have a moment of regret, so put some thought into it.

Don't sell off your super limited stuff, or anything you have an emotional attachment to, but sell the stuff you wanted for 3 days a couple years ago and have since not bothered with.

Sounds very normal to me.

And remember once nuclear armageddon starts all that lead will shield you from most of the radiation. So really if you think about it. It is irresponsible not to hoard all that lead.

Four things I did:

1 Sell stuff you will never paint/play with.
2. Use the money to finish off what you will use.
3. Don't buy any new armies.
4. Avoid shows, they are the road to shiny hell.

When we moved flat recently, over a third of the boxes being packed into the minibus and cars contained my hobby stuff...

I have the opposite problem. I can't make my mind up on a project / ruleset / scale and end up agonising and buying nothing. My collection is actually pretty small

You came to the right place. LAF will make you start projects for settings you've never even heard of before!  :D

I was hiding stash of stuff in my closet. Like a 15 year old going to be done GW beast men army. With the room needing to be painted it's been exposed. Pink Floyd lyrics the trial was going through my mind when the boxes came out and it's not good...

'I sentence you to be exposed before
Your peers
Tear down the wall'

Still she does get the it would cost loads to replace this now but buying more is questionable. :)

I keep telling myself that I’m just waiting for my kids to get old enough to use the room full of stuff I have accumulated. Then we can play together.

Yeah, like I'm not emotionally attached to 99.999% of my figures.

If you do an inventory of what you have unpainted. Work out how long it will take you to paint them. Double that,as that’s how long it will actually take. Add the time to your age. If the answer takes you to over 80 then maybe it is time to pare things down a bit?  lol

Doesn't that spoil the 'one one with the most toys when they die wins' concept a bit though?

I am not a hoarder. I've never assembled a horde in all my life.

My pal Genghis, on the other hand...

My boy just turned 17.  I have recently rebased all my ancients for DBA 3.0 and we began playing that.  He beat me.  He got hooked and he's now got himself a Thessalian army and is painting that while I'm making inroads into my lead-mountain to put more armies onto those 2ft x 2ft tables......so it does happen!

As for "I am a hoarder with short attention span" just remember the mantra: "1 is too many; 10,000 is not enough!"  I'm at 11,200+ and counting.

I have quite a hoard, and am trying to rationalise. I have no problem with Mrs Orcs as we have enough space.  I have my own den, a large garage loft and our house loft is only half full.

The money spent is mine and has no impact on the household budget. So no issues there.

The problem is you look at stuff and say "Its only one shoebox and I might have a use for it"  Do that 95 times and you have a lot of stuff.  So this year I have been trying only to buy stuff to finish off projects I am actually  working on .  I have done reasonably well at this having completed several 10mm Armies this year. trouble is Christmas and Birthday are coming up

I have not purchased anything today!!! But the day is not over.

I look at this like my retirement investments. The prices keep going up, so they will be worth more in the future. Look at some of the GW prices.

So I am saving for retirement.

Work for me! :D

My last purchase was the mad maximilian rules but I had been waiting on those to be released for some time. (very tasty they are too)

Even the AA threads around here are traps!

I used to try that - I've still never completed a project to my satisfaction mind!

It just popped into my small brain this morning, just a little hobby related thought, but.

Where can I get attention span, what scales do they come in, and who makes them?

Or are they OOP?

I made an agreement with the Mrs. I will never buy more figures if they can't fit in her shoe-boxes. I'm settled for my next five reincarnations.

Thats an interesting measure. Is a shoe box of figures worth more than the shoes?
