Title: Godless (Netflix)
Post by: Elbows on 23 November 2017, 11:40:41 PM
Stumbled onto a new 8-episode series.  So far, pretty damn good.  Only a couple episodes in.  Worth a watch - and it has Jeff Daniels.

Well, it's not really all of Jeff. He is missing arm arm. Was a little slow (warning first episode is a double length one - I think this is the difference between Luisito and Elbows thinking it's 7 and 8 episodes), while good it's not really anything new (not necessary a bad thing). I like that it had a strong female lead.

Only watched the first episode last week. Haven’t had time to catch up on the rest, although I think I’m pretty clear on what’s going to happen in the story and how it’s going to play out, because it’s a pretty traditional western tale from what I can see.

But the attention to detail and stunning cinematography is anything but predictable. It’s excellent.  I am looking forward to seeing the rest. I am going to savour every beautiful visual moment. I am going to pace myself for once, and not inhale the whole thing in one giant snort!

I do wonder why so many of the main characters are played by Brits though, when there are so many Americans in America?  :)

Don't be so sure...  ;)

That's exactly the idea!  :)

Maybe Brits are better actors?! :D

I binge watched the first 3 or 4 episodes. Just struggling to find time to finish it off.
Looks good, decent plot, action scens and acting.
Only concern is its advertised as limited ...

Yep, it's only 7 episodes... No way to make a second season, because everybody dies in the last episode!  ;D

Just finished it. It is absolutely superb! Ain't a series, though. It's a darn eight long hours movie.

The ending is wonderful. Felt perhaps it slowed down just a little bit in the middle. But overall, a great addition to the world of classic movie and TV westerns.

Agree with those sentiments too - along with some stunning scenery. While the whole cast was good, Scoot McNairy (Sheriff Bill McNue) was a stand out.

And what about Jeff Daniels? Wow! His Frank Griffin is terrifying, but at the same time with the just amount of vulnerability to empathize with the character... and all of that without justifying his actions at all!

I have really enjoyed it thus far. Not done yet.

I was a bit concerned that they killed off my favorite character early... Shades of GoT. Almost wanted to stop watching but I am hooked.

I enjoyed it too. It had a good few "NOOOOOO!!" moments from me as something I didn't want to happen, happened.

My favourite character has to be Mary Agnes (the sheriff's sister) and her 'no shit' attitude. Took me a while to realise she was 'Doctor' Denise from The Walking Dead.

I think the reason I enjoyed it so much, was that it had a somewhat concise narrative (even easy to see at a distance), confined to 8 episdoes (relatively short by modern standards), but most importantly...it didn't try too hard.  Excellent characters, unique environments/ideas, and it was simply well done.

Exactly my thoughts.
