Heres a taster of my next project. A scenario based on one of my favourite Westerns Ulzana's Raid. The film was loosely based on a true incident when Ulzana an Apache chief left the reservation and went on a killing and looting spree across Arizona and New Mexico with the US cavalry in hot pursuit.
We've been playing a lot of FistFul of Lead recently thanks to Ramirez No Name and having just taken delivery of the Apache I thought it would be good to start the wheels in motion with a quick game. In this scenario Ulzana has eight warriors and is attempting to kill the homesteaders before the cavalry arrive.
There are four armed homesteaders, several women sheltering in the homestead and six US cavalry. The game began with the Apache moving in on the settlers. We diced for the arrival of the cavalry each turn.
Here are a few teasers. I'll post more later with a report on how the raid went.

Wow! Looks great Nick, looking forward to the rest of the posts :)

Ooooh , this will be interesting. Lovely muted painting on the Apache, I,ve just bought a band of them from E bay , and am looking for tips on painting them . There seems to be a lot of cover on the table , hope the settlers have built a storm cellar under the house ........
-
That set-up looks superb. :-*
-
Wow, what a great set up !
FFoL is brilliant fun and its good to read that others are enjoying. Hats of to Baron Von J for producing such an accessible and easy to learn game.

That's a lot of buttes!!!! Look forward to reading the battle report.

Great set up mate! :-* All those hills are going to offer a good challenge to game play!

Hank and Dutch had been standing in the corral admiring Dutch's new wagon when the shooting started, they ran quickly to the cover of the wall. Dutch pulled back the hammers on his 12guage and waited For the attack...

Nana makes his way into the rocks and draws a bead on one of the White Eyes.
John Fisher has just enough time to pose for "Which Stetson" magazine before the shooting started.
Mangas not wishing to miss out on the fun takes a pot shot at John Fisher'S fancy hat. (He missed, like most of the Apaches on this day the dice rolling was abysmal.) Shortly after this he was shot dead by John Fisher, who was clearly not happy that Mangas was trying to shoot his hat.

More in a while. :)

Absolutely terrific! The minis and terrain are amazing. FFoL is a great fun game. Good job all around. Thanks for sharing!
regards, Bill

Loco decided he had had enough of creeping around in the rocks and decided a full frontal assault was in order. He traded shots with Dutch and surprisingly it was Dutch who ended up dead alongside Hank, who was shot dead early in the fight. (Sadly for the Apache after this it all went horribly wrong)
Ulzana and Goyathlay had done a splendid job of creeping around to outflank John fancy hat Fisher and his friend Ed Stoudabaker. Unfortunately once they started trading shots with them they came off worst. Both became pinned, Ulzana then failed his pin roll and fled the table closely followed by Goyathalay shortly thereafter.
Then things took even more of a turn for the worse as the cavalry arrived under the command of Lt Gatewood right behind the Apaches..

I like big buttes and I cannot lie...tremendous!

Poor Nana, he had found himself a great position to snipe on the homestead only to find himself attacked from behind by three cavalrymen. He didn't last long.
Having despatched Nana the cavalry split up and advance on the remaining Apache.
Taza and Loco turn to face the advancing White Eyes. They don't last long.
Nitis the last surging Apache decides to go toe to toe with Ed Stoudabaker, having run out of ammunition all he had left was his hatred and his trusty knife. Surely he could avenge the loss of his brothers. Unfortunately not he was soon to be dust on the wind.....

An excellent game, some great die rolls by the White Eyes and some hopeless rolling by the Apache. All in all great fun and food for thought for the next scenario. :)
-
Fantastic AAR and some great figures too. Apaches by Foundry?
-
:-* Excellent! Apparently the 'pache forgot their first rule, don't be seen ;)
-
Lovely set up guys. Are the bark walls backfilled with blue foam or expanding foam, or some such material? I have a load of bark pieces to do the same thing but haven't started them due to not having anywhere to store them. I did wonder about making them hollow to store little ones inside big ones but that means the base is essentially a rim rather than a full baseboard. Any tips?
-
Lovely stuff :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Is that Douglas's off of the magic roundabout joined the calvery?
-
A most excellent game report, the terrain is very impressive, I didn't know you had such big buttes. :o :o
Really enjoyed the read, the Apache seemed to had had a bad day, hope they are back soon to get their revenge.
-

Galloping Major and Artizan. Sadly the original Foundry Apache are too small, more like 25mm than today's large 30mm plus figures.

Back filled and stuffed with blue foam. Storage is the loft ;) lol
Just make them and be done with it. ;) lol

They learned their lesson good and proper. They'll be jumping that reservation again soon. ;)

That looks fantastic Nick. Great table.

Most excellent. What size board did you play on?

+1 recommendation of the FfoL rules, and thanks to you for introducing them to us ;)
The game was very enjoyable. I managed to use Malamute's innate ability to one less than the number required to my advantage, and even though the cavalry didn't arrive until turn 4 the homesteaders managed to hold on to their scalps (for the most part).
-
Excellent report guys and lovely toys as usual. Played the horse and musket version of these rules a little while back but I couldn't get on with them, I think now there were to many figures per player and it became a bit unwieldy.
This report has made me think about giving them another go :)
Thanks to Steve talking about rims and everyone else talking about buttes, Paul will be along in a bit to talk about rimming buttes no doubt lol
-
lol
I reckon six figures each is about right for a decent game.
-
Most excellent. What size board did you play on?
4 x 4.
-
I like big buttes and I cannot lie...tremendous!
lol
They are nice ;)
-
Good looking game and nice write-up.
Interesting rules as well, might give them a go for my Independent Texians.
-
Paul will be along in a bit to talk about rimming buttes no doubt lol
This was actually a well practiced tactic used by the Apaches - they would crawl to the rim of their local butte and fire down on the cavalry.
"There go those goddam Indians, rimming their buttes again" was a phrase often heard from an ambushed cavalry patrol
-
Is that why you played the White Eyes, Mark? So as not to be confronted with the prospect of rimming Nick’s Butte?
-
lovely stuff

Only you (or possibly Mason) would think of that. lol

I fear you are forever stuck in the prarie.

AWESOME scenery, minis and everything! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Ulzana's motley crew just got's to the 'Gormless Clan'of the Mescalero!
:o
-
Super battle report.
Love the terrain and the figures.
I have to agree the Foundry guys are smaller than newer figures.
But they do make a great range of figures.
So you could use them and have most of the guys you need.

Thanks for posting and all the kind words about FfoL.
The game sizes well from 1 on 1 games to 8 player free for alls. Having a good scenario, is as always, the best.
Now, if I could just find a distributor in the UK....

I would suggest contacting Lance at Galloping Major Miniatures. He stocks wargames rules that mirror his ranges and he is slowly developing an Old West range... And he's a LAFer and is a splendid chap to deal with. :)

Wonderful eye candy, Mama.
Only just clocked this.

And good see Dr De'Ath keeping up the tradition of rigging everyone else dice rolling with the use of magic, voodoo and other shifty stuff.

He's becoming alarmingly good at that. He manmaged it again the other night, although Bibbles trumped us both with some canny gun play lol

Yep, Big Guns Bibbly served up a can of whoopass on both of us last time, despite most of his posse turning up with out ammunition ;)

Fabulous scenery. Absolutely stunning! And the AAR read very well. Loved every picture.

Incidentally, all this Old West activity lately in these parts saw us digging out the Upsheet Creek scenery last night and playing the original scenario from BLAM 14 twice. Good fun and it worked just as well with three players, which surprised me.
We should be playing in the Creek again next week, maybe a FfoL game this time.
Ya see what you lot and that bloody RMZ have gone and done!

Wonderful game table and figures. The AAR report is fantastic too, and very useful. Thanks a lot!

This marvellous thread has prompted me to purchase Fistful of Lead with a view to playing some games with my very slowly developing 54mm Western Cavalry Movie project. Rules look fun - simple and cinematic and ideal for multi-player games. Just my thing! I also bought the Horse and Musket version and scenario booklet too. Looking forward to trying them out... Just need to paint a few Sioux and I'll have enough ready for a small game. Thanks for the inspiration! :D
-
Excellent they should suit 54mm games well :)
-
Yes, works great for 54mm. My buddy Ccuk Amok has run several French and Indian War skirmishes for me at cons.

My dear Baron, could you tell me how to burn down buildings in F0fL please!?
How many flame markers/moves does it take for the Redskins to get a proper, and unstoppable, conflagration going, I'm guessing up to a certain number the defenders can stamp the fires out? Hope you can help as in the very future my recently finished Indians are going raiding!
??? :) ???

PM with fire rules sent to Mr. Faversham. They are covered in the Viva Revolution! supplement.

My Dear Baron, you iz di' man... you might not be after mi' next FofL though...
you couldn't make it up!!!
:-*

That sounds ominous. Hope it was a good game.

it was the best game we've had... and that's saying something!!!
:-*

Not wanting to hijack the thread I won't post the AAR on yesterday's game on here.
:)

We've decided to do 'Ulzana's Raid' as next week's game, but try and set it in terrain similar to 'Hostiles'. Struggling a bit till I re-discovered a box of fifty year old Pine trees. Some had become very brittle and fell apart as I handled 'em, but I think I've salvaged enough to make a decent bit of woodland. Looked a tad crap, but after a vigorous dry brush, they'll do!
:)
