Title: Anyone else just got there Star Saga Kickstarter?
Post by: Chris Abbey on December 07, 2017, 05:40:40 PM
Postman delivered my Star Saga wave one kickstarter pledge from Mantic yesterday.
Must say, I'm pretty impressed with the game and it's components.
I immediately set to work putting together a storage solution to organize and store the miniatures, cards, tokens, dice and terrain neatly inside a 9 litre Really Useful Box (RUB).

I've put together a bit of a video to show what I've done on Youtube.

I got mine. At least the 1st wave. I have a security guard with missing arms and some stuff to unbend via hot water. All my tokens and cards seem okay. It's kind of lumpy and the box must be missing a sleeve or else this thing is going to be invisible at retail, all grey and dark green with no bit logo on it.

I got my first wave as well.  Not nearly as impressed as Chris.  The Aberation is missing from my box and even using the hot water technique I can't get a lot of the furniture to sit straight.  They took those beautiful furniture renders and produced them in bendy wobbly PVC.  The doors are nice and solid in hard plastic though.  The figures themselves are good for PVC (on par with the Walking Dead figures), but the deep red of the enemies makes all the detail disappear.  I haven't had a chance to dig into the rules yet.

I did and was massively underwhelmed. I wasn't missing anything but I didn't think the minis were that much better that Dungeon Saga despite what was claimed, still had a load of soft detail and bendy figures, plus the books inside were ruins with rips in.

We played through the first 4 missions and was a bit meh. Not terrible but instantly forgettable and I really doubt my friends were that interested in picking it up again.

I'll use the soldier minis as random mooks in other games, but I didn't think it lived up to the hype (a feeling I've had a few times with Mantic), but hey ho, risk you take with Kickstarters I guess.

That's very disappointing :-[

I was concerned about bendy miniatures and such like so avoided the kickstarter (and even managed to resist temptation on the pre-sale offer last month). Looks like I made the right choice, but still annoying, as the figures and scenery looked nice.

I've been burned by Mantic's restic troopers in the past, and have had too many boxes with things missing. It's a part of their business they just don't seem able to sort out, and it makes me wary of dealing with them.

What's the quality of the cardboard corridors like? It was pretty good on Dungeon Saga, so hopefully at least that aspect hasn't got worse.

I'll maybe see when the box gets discounted on Wayland, but by the looks if it, there's no great rush.

The card stock is pretty much identical to Dungeon Saga. For me I don't like the artwork. I struggle to see what squares or what due to the fact they're pretty much white corridors. But that's more of a personal thing. Some people seem to love the art.

I avoided this one due to Dungeon Saga disappointment, glad I did now.

I love my Walkig Dead stuff but got a bit burnt by Mantic when I asked for the replacement ‘Adventurers Companion’ after the deadline for replacement expired. I acknowledged that and offered to pay for it but was basically given a one liner response of ‘Nope, you’re too late’.

The thing that killed the KS for me was the general design of the space station. Not a fan of the tiles, like with Dungeon Saga. I just don't get the design without any walls, it doesn't work for me. Too chaotic and busy in design. I'd rather have the Warhammer Quest/Space Hulk look with big black edges. A much nicer and less busy design.
Going by the posts above I'm glad I pulled back my pledge to $1 before the end of the KS.

One of my security mooks has no arms so I only have 8 of them instead of nine. The jellyfish thing is a mess, will need to destress it in hot water. Most of the furniture turned out badly though screen consoles and doors are okay. Desks and consoles are pretty bent up

Soldiers look OKAY
Security look good
Rangers look great
Modified 3rd gen plague with pants are okay.
Scientist (woman with rod, man with kife are okay
Jellyfish telepath alien cyborg is a ball of overly-bendy nonsense.
Alien vampire medic ladymerc is meh
Security boss guy looks fine *maybe a general?)
Enforcer recon boss guy is decent
Nameless merc thing with shoulder gun is meh
Wrath merc has bendy sword but is okay. Short cape looks like an odd fashion choice.
Flame thrower merc guy is okay
Dawrf guy merc is pretty good
Rat guy merc IS deeply awesome.
Four legged thing is...weird and need hot water and glue.
Plo Kloon predator guy in armor is okay
Lady merc with normal gun is okay.
Robot is sad bendy crap that only looks good from 3/4 angles. Hot water and love...

I think the tiles look like nonsense. White with red paint stripes doesn't feel very space ship/station to me.They feel like place holder designs.

Special kickstarter box is dark, no contrast and no logo so not going to look great on a shelf. Retail box is much nicer.

Mine came maybe a week after I saw it in retail so that was a bummer.

haven't read the books yet.

counters are typical fare.

This is a C- for Mantic i thought Dungeon Saga turned out better even with the problems it had with proof reading. Terrain was better and more useful. I never got the Walking dead box, butt he best PVC thing they've put out is still Mars attacks.

I'm still looking forward to the future wave/waves though.

I may be getting my Mythic preorder too pretty soon.

Vampire Hunters and Deep madness are in spring sometime. Relic Knights is whenever Soda pop turns loose of it.

I avoided this KS because Dungeon Saga was one of the most uninspiring products I ever received from a Kickstarter.  Sounds like this is a solidly Mantic product - the kings of "almost".  I was really tempted toward the end, but I guess I may have chosen correctly.  lol  I had hoped this would turn out a lot better.
