Revisited a very old project and put some effort in.
1/56 DUKW
It splits in the middle to convert to waterline
-
Good start, the split option is a good idea.
-
This does look rather excellent! Do you intend to add pegs or some other device to lock them together?
-
Brilliant 8) 8)
-
Now with wheels
-
That's a lovely scratch build. Sterling work.

Wolt

Will be going to Die Waffenkammer for casting at some point...
-
Nice work Rich!
-
I so much admire the skills of the scratch builder.
-
That is fantastic - very clever to waterline it in such a concealed way!
-
Cast it with drop outs to take magnets to make the waterline conversion very simple?
-
Thanks all.
It's got pegs now to align the two halves.
It's also got a winch now. It would have been a lot easier if I'd included it in the original hull build...
-
Cool. I had a whole fleet of these back in the day, both the bendy plastic Airfix ones and the proper kit ones.
-
Detail slowly being added
-
Cockpit
-
Beautifully done - the waterline idea should be adopted for all amphibious vehicles and ship models! 8) 8) 8)

Thanks.
Discovered my problem with the drawing too...
The drawing is for the Soviet copy of the DUKW! It's almost the same in most respects but the load bay is different.
Fortunately the rest is an exact copy!
-
I'm loving this. This is the craft (well, and ...amphibious craft :P ). Nothing looks as crap as a render, nothing looks as cool as a competently done scratch-build.
So what about that load bay now? Do you have to change a lot about the model?
-
A skillful build. Bravo.
-
Thanks!
@Battle Brush Sigur - No changes, fortunately I'd noticed the load bay was different and amended it already to a normal DUKW but it puzzled me. I figured I'd got a DUKW variant or something, the Soviet one has a fold down rear ramp.
Luckily it's as good as identical in all other respects.
Now need to find a drawing of the MG hoop so I can add that in as an option.
-
Nearly done. Few rivets and details the MG ring and tilt.
-
Rear deck
-
Superb :o 8) :-*
-
Cheers! Not quite sure how to make the canvas tilt so it can be cast... but I'll work it out somehow!
-
Excellent work, I had thought about scratchbuilding one a long time ago, glad I didn't get round to it.
-
My enabler Jeff of Die Waffenkammer will be casting them in due course ;)
-
Looks good.
-
Progress...
-
Not much to do
MG ring and front tilt then steering wheel.
-
Excellent.
So how did you do the canvas, or is that your secret sauce?
-
Thank-you for posting this thread.
I have really enjoyed watching this take shape.
It is very interesting and informative.

Thanks chaps.
The canvas is muslin cloth (previously used to filter honey as it happens) draped over a plasticard structure to give the frames. Then slapped with loads of PVA glue. The glue soaks into the muslin and stiffens it nicely. I'll probably cut some of the strucutre away inside and backfill it with something (possibly miliput or DAS clay) to make it lass bulky and more robust for casting.
The steering wheel will be a pain, they always are... I think I'll laser cut a frame then make the rim with wire.
-
I saw one of these in The City sometime, I will see if I can find a photograph.
-
Awesome master!!! :o :o :o What's the next in your queue?
-
Wow, Rich!....just wow! :o
-
Thanks!
I've a few things I need to be doing. A Sidecar for an italian motorbike first.
I also have several nearly finished projects that I never quite get around to...
I need to take another look at the Oxford carrier but that needs tracks and they can be tedious...
I get distracted quite easily though. So maybe a Seep?

Mostly because it's sat on my desk! lol
-
Just the MG ring to go
-
That is a very weird effect on the bike.
The DUKW looks great.
-
No idea what's going on but it looks fine now! Bear in mind the bike is only 15mm high and 30mm long!
-

lol lol
-
Luverly work on the DUKW!
-
Amazing. May I ask how you do that Italian bike for example? Is it all basically just plasticard bits and milliput(?) cut and sculpted to fit?
-
Hey, if yer gettin all amphibious and fancy a challenge how about one of these?
The Corgi toy is a bit too small for my needs and it's not quite an SR.N5
-
The bikes are made of lasercut and engraved 1mm MDF, about 4-5 layers then miliput. I'll find some pics later.
Iued to have a 1/16 scale R/C hovercraft like that....
-
MG ring mount
Needs detail and a trim.
-
Pic of a failed bike so you can see the laters
Note the ruler in cm!
-
Wow!
-
DUKW has had its undercoat and it jsut needs a few minor blemishes sorting then it's ready for shipping to Canada for casting.
Just finished a Motoguzzi Alce with sidecar as a commission too.
Next wil be a Trialce tricycle and maybe something fomr my backlog...

Is the Sdkfz 6/3 Diana in your backlog?
-
It's been mentioned before... but not at the mo.
Oxford carrier (just needs tracks) SU-76 in 1/48 (needs interior finishing) and an M4 High Speed Tractor (needs starting) currently

Schachtellaufwerk looks like hard work...
Petition Jeff Trnka of Die Waffenkammer see if he's got anything stashed away?
If someone make the SDkFz6 it would be a lot easier!
