Having seen the very cool Galleys from Skull and Crown, I wanted to do something similar.
Thou I liked the models, I am not a big MDF-fan...
So I started to try out something in plastic card and paper tisuues...:)

Awesome project!
Brings to my mind my dad's projects many decades ago. Simple but very good-looking.
-
Thanx, gents....;)
After returning from asia I started with my galleys again.
Today just 2 WIP pics to give you an idea how I made the ships....;)
The grid on the mat is 1cm.
(http://i.imgur.com/WLkP9yXl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/WLkP9yX')
Anda side shot....:)
(http://i.imgur.com/aWjEtbdl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/aWjEtbd')
So its pretty strait forward: a base layer with the rudders, 2 stripes for the main hull and some very thin stripes for the fightong deck. Then I add a fore castel and a captains tent in the back. The toothpick mast is super glued in the next step. Took me around 1 1/2 hours to build....:)
@Rules
I think I take the Galleys Gun and Glory rules. But need a playtest if they fit my needs.
Cheers,
Don

I absolutley love these.
I wonder if you could get yourself a little die cutting machine from the works or a craft shop and rig it up to make these ?
-
These really are lovely :)
cheers

So, today I managed to get the first galley playtest on the tabletop.
We first started with a 1 on 1... wich worked fine.
And after a short coke break we pitted 5 on 5 galleys of different nationalities.
Just get a few pics together...:)

The rules worked fine for me....but I need more playtests....:)

I'm trying REALLY hard to save money and dedicate my time to a single project.
But i REALLY like these galleys and the more you do, the more i want to have a go at making some Renaissance pirates. lol
-
Thank you gentlemen....:)
Here are a few ods and ends I painted last night...another galley for the knights of malta, a "middle" galley and some smaller vessels for the pirates
(http://i.imgur.com/wNUThmol.jpg) (https://imgur.com/wNUThmo)
Hopefully the players can tell the difference in the heat of battle.....:)
Cheers,
Don

Blimey, these are cracking
-
Thanx, smirnoff....;)
I end the week with the new flags for the venecian lanterna and some crew markers for venice.

A thought just occurred... How big are these? I've been looking at them as if they were TEENY TINY, But that if that's a 1cm grid then they must be what, 15cm LONG? ! :o
Either way I'm amazed, I just want to know what KIND of amazed i should be.
-
Love the new additions to the fleets. :-* How did the rules work out?
-
Don,
What ruleset are you playing with? I am curious to try my hand at this but I know only the Poseidons Warriors set from Osprey and that one left me cold.
-
Yes...the models are quite big....:)
(http://i.imgur.com/g3RtlXjl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/g3RtlXj')
And yes...its a 1cm grid.
@Rules
I just played two small games with "Galleys, Guns and Glory" from Thomas Foss.
I liked the rules and will give them another trythe next days...;)
Will give you an update how they worked out with bigger fleets.
Cheers,
Don
-
The pics you've already sent are very evocative, my interest for this thread goes higher and higher! Eager to see your fleets in a big battle! Cheers!
-
No matter the size they still look the biz :D
-
Okay, today I played the first big battle with the galleys...;)
26 ships on the table of Battlefield Berlin....:)
Pretty blue surface, but I am not done with my sea mat.
So here are the starting position of the fleets.
Pretty straight forward...three battles on each side.
(http://i.imgur.com/yFYIr52l.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/yFYIr52')
And a sideview...
(http://i.imgur.com/Xg8A2wml.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/Xg8A2wm')
First shots are fired...!
(http://i.imgur.com/Uv39wqIl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/Uv39wqI')
In the center the galleys go full speed.
(http://i.imgur.com/quu7SyXl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/quu7SyX')
Next to the little fortress the first fights breack out.
(http://i.imgur.com/fIG2LwOl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/fIG2LwO')
More fighting....;)
(http://i.imgur.com/LFVzbTrl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/LFVzbTr')
Strand my opponent is sneaking with his side flottilla in the back of my center....ouch....8)
(http://i.imgur.com/00swdlfl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/00swdlf')
After 2 hours a race sets in: who is coming with more ships to help his center...
(http://i.imgur.com/6w7POR1l.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/6w7POR1')
On the left flank the genouese manage to throw the corsairs back...due to acurate arqebuse fire.
(http://i.imgur.com/TWmGpO7l.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/TWmGpO7')
At that time we had to leave and called it a draw.
Not a bad game....:)
Exited for the next playtest.
Cheers,
Don

Am I much mistaken in the assumption that you use your own rules?
-
I wonder how your plans would scale for 32mm figures? There is a serious lack of galleys in that scale.
