Afternoon fellow gamers,

Just before Xmas we had a go at the AWI classic Monmouth Courthouse using 28mm figs and British Grenadier Rules.

A cracking time was had by all and I even had the odd moment to take some pretty pictures and why not !

I have included some orbats and set up info for those who fancy a go at the game too.

Enjoy, Regards Ken

Great looking game Ken. Excellent paint jobs on the figures. Recently refought Eutaw Springs with Sean before Christmas using BP which led me to try BG for the next game.

Thanks everyone.

Hi Pete, BG are very different to BP and for me give a much better "feel" for the period. I find BP  too generic even with period modifiers.

Is that Sean Eaton ?

Sean Wilcox. Don’t know about BP being too generic. Just found the last few games with a bit lacklustre. Oddly have a recent Napoleonic game with them and they worked quite well for that.

Nice game.
I find BG very slow and all those charts . Personally BP AWI amendments seem to work as l don't care about winning but play in the spirit/style of the time frame .The joy is the look and BP gives you a lot of scope .

Nice looking game. 8)

British Grenadier simulates the period better then anything I've played to date, but it comes at a cost in time and has a somewhat steep learning curve thus imho is pretty much for AWI enthusiasts for the most part.

Black powder plays much more fluid and with some modifications does a very good job at emulating the period. It's pretty easy to both teach and learn plus collecting for it is easier because of flexibility in creating unit sizes.

I find most times I prefer playing Black Powder using the most excellent Rebellion supplement, but sometimes I really just want the simulation experience and reach for British Grenadier and their equally superb scenario supplements when I have time and in the mood.

I think that's a decent summary of what many think 're BG vs BP. I have said a few times before we are very lucky in having a permanent set up so there is no rush when It comes to gaming, if a games lasts a few sessions so what, if we only get one move done because Ian wants to outline his latest Car Insurance ideas (trust me he had to be there ?) It doesn't matter.

It's me being "old school" but I just don't "get" Black Powder, the same way I don't "get" Hail Caesar, every period seems to play exactly the same with some period amendments chucked in as an after thought. Don't get me wrong having similar rule sets for different periods can be a bonus with less concepts / game  to learn as the GdeB, BG, Die Kreigskunst family show.

Horses for courses ! Don't get me started on Bolt Action.
