I have an important announcement for you today. As you’ve probably noticed, I haven’t been very active on the forum in the last months (and even before that), which was for many reasons, none of them bad, just the usual RL stuff, family, work, other things/interests. I won’t be going any deeper into this, but really don’t need to worry – I’m fine, it’s just some personal stuff.

Nonetheless, due to all those things I had to limit the time I spend on the hobby, and above all I had to find a solution for running of LAF as I am not able any more to take care of this community as much as it deserves. For that reason, I really want to say “thank you” to our moderator team, to every one of them, for being around all the time, every day, offering their time, reading posts, helping, inspiring. I really appreciate your efforts, guys, thanks again!

Still, there are some other things which must be done, like forum software updates, hardware issues etc. Someone must take care of all these things, and frankly, it’s time to let some fresh air in. Thus, I started to look for someone who could replace me as legal owner and chief administrator of LAF. It wasn’t easy and I won’t be boring you with details but, among others, I approached Nick from North Star and asked him if he would be interested in taking care of LAF. Nick was surprised at first, but following some thinking, he said yes.

I understand that this news is probably as much a surprise for you as it was for Nick :) But yes, the decision had been made, I decided that I cannot run LAF any longer and I really would like to say another thank you, this time to Nick! Running this community isn’t that easy, after all. I hope all of you out there are aware of that. Just like work, it never stops. Therefore, I’m glad we could find someone willing to take this burden voluntarily :) And please don’t get it wrong, it’s not a commercial transaction. I didn’t sell LAF, I never would. I am giving it to Nick as this place is a labour of love. It has become too big for me to handle, but it’s still a lovely place to be.

I will let Nick to say some words on that too and to tell you what his plans are for the forum. We’re already working on the technical side of the things so please be prepared for some downtime on LAF in the coming days, maybe weeks. The server database needs to be migrated from my server to Nick’s. A thorough and major software update needs to be done, membership authorisations re-created etc. It’s a lot of work and it will take some time. But I will try to warn you in time.

Now let me finish this announcement. And let me say thanks to all of you. For all the good times we had together, for all your input, creativity and inspiration. It’s been an honour.

I have to admit to some concern with it being taken over by a "commercial" entity (even one popular with many of the members here) but will wait to hear from Northstar themselves about how they plan to handle "debate" about the merits of their products when it appears.

In all honesty, my plans for LAF don't go any further than 'business as usual' right now. I’ve been here myself since 2011, and I want to see it continue.

I’ve got my friends at Wargames Illustrated looking at the technical side of the transfer, I don’t know anything about it and they do, so if you see their name in the background, that’s why.

It’s my hope that all the moderators will stay on, and run their boards like they always have. I’ve no intention of using each board for product placement or shutting down debate about our stuff. Commercially my only thought right now is to re-introduce the banner ads that used to appear, this time you’ll see mine as well as Miniaturicums/ Lead Adventure Miniatures. I may start a new board for North Star news, so you can participate or not in it, but that’s something I’ll do once we are up and running.

My biggest concern is the ‘up and running’ part. We don’t know what will happen when we move server, and we will have to update the software, so please bear with us if problems arise.

A last note just to say Veteran member of LAF and BLAM Dewbacuk will also be joining me in running LAF. He’s staff at North Star, so we see each other each working day (and gaming time outside), and he knows you lot much better than I do, so it seems a good call.

I've enjoyed almost a decade of inspiration, amusement and community on your wonderful forum. It remains a shining example of what a proper BBS can be.

Thank you for your time and effort and for bringing together so many like-minded people. I'm very happy that you have found someone (hello Nick!) to take the helm and continue our adventure.

I've not been a poster for very long but have lurked here for oh, so many years, even when not doing any hobby stuff myself, because of the friendly atmosphere.

In fact, I ought to say the tone of the place is not so much one of courtesy as maturity. Arguments, when they have arisen, seem to be calmed down rather than crushed. Discussion is passionate but there is always the sense that things get too heated, most of the members and team behind the scenes realise that the toys being thrown out of the pram are, when all is said and done, toys.

I wish the Prof all the best, and hope that this site may still be going as strong further down the line when, should circumstances allow, he may pop up again!

Looks like that is settled. Lead Adventure Miniatures does have its own board under the general pages so Northstar could easily do the same.

LAF has been my go to site for wargaming and miniatures since then. I appreciate the tone and conviviality of this forum. Having been to other sites, I know that gentlemanly tone is due to how this forum is moderated and guided. I have confidence that Nick will continue this tradition. Prof I understand how real life interferes with our hobby. I hope that stepping down will give you more painting time so that we can enjoy your little 28mm gems! All the best!

Nick - on a practical level (and you may well already have plans to do this) if the site is going to be down over long(ish) periods maybe you could put an update/estimate of when it'll be up again on your site, just so LAFers have somewhere to check what's happening?

Although obviously it is sad that Alex is handing it on (and best of luck, Alex), I think that Nick will do a super job carrying it on, and with the back up of a larger team if necessary.

They were indeed, and glad to hear it :)

I’ve been fairly quiet over the last couple of years largely due to not having easy access to a real computer. However we’re hoping the updates will sort that and make the forum more tablet/mobile friendly. I have a feeling they weren’t really a thing when the forum was set up :o

LAF has also been the catalyst behind several purchases of one sort or another.

Loved every minute, though.

And I just realized the 20th of this month was my 10 year anniversary on LAF. Wowsers!

And what a journey it is. I was just barely making it to a couple of game days and collecting & painting miniatures pretty much by myself at home. After joining this forum I have gotten into painting a lot more. Joined the LPL one year. Have had the opportunity to learn & trade ideas with folks from all over the world. Discovered many new sources for gaming materials. Made some new friends, and even got a chance to meet and game with some of them. And kept in touch with some old friends that have moved to other parts. This has become an important part of my life. Thank you so much for all you have given to me, and to many others on here over the years. Wish you the best & will still look forward to whatever you join us for & post in the future. ;)

Btw I take you will still be an active member, just not moderating anymore? I would hate to have to miss your regular entries in the LPL!

I was a long time moderator on the Bolter and Chainsword forum (before I discovered a whole miniatures universe outside of 40K), so I can appreciate the time and effort that goes into running a forum of this magnitude.

And I can completely attribute the opening of my eyes to the greater miniatures hobby to LAF. :)

Also, I have all confidence that Nick and his team will keep up the same level of excellence that LAF is widely known for.

Oh; and hopefully we'll still be seeing your awesome paintjobs being posted here; they're always a pleasure to gawk at and a sure source of inspiration.

I found the LAF by chance due to a post by Captain Blood on the Steve Dean forum and I have much enjoyed checking in to be inspired by everyones creations.

It really is a very positive, friendly and polite place to dwell and I am sure this will continue.

Its great the Nick is taking the helm, and I am sure that things will be pretty much the same.

As for the future, I'm confident the forum will keep its identity as long as the current moderators remain on board and keep up their sterling work. Nick, just retain the strict 'no politics' rule and proactive, balanced moderation, maintain the LAF's zero tolerance policy toward trolls, blowhards and troublemakers and all will be well, I think.

The new nest for LAF is nearly ready. It's looking much like this one, which is good news. The Prof. has been fully involved, making sure everything is in place.

We're not sure if we can bring the original banner over. If we can't, we'll store it somewhere safe where you can view it nostalgically and get our Kev Dallimore to work on something new.

There will be at least a days down time in the swop over, we'll give you plenty of warning as to when that day is, but it'll be soon.

I would like to spend more time over here as well, especially with regard to posting, but juggling RL time and hobby time also puts a limit on what I can do and I often end up merely browsing news and pretty pictures with occasionaly joining the LPL , so I understand you passing this on.

Couple of points:

1. I really only go to the Frostgrave sub-forum, so missed the announcement, and subsequent forum move - is it possible to make a "global" post so that others like me don't miss threads like this in the future (I know some forum types can).

2. Related to #1, I had the site bookmarked, specifically the Frostgrave sub-forum, which obviously stopped working, but there was nothing on the old address to tell me the site had moved or pointing to the new address, I assumed the site was down for maintenance, and only managed to get here by accident when I deleted the "/index.php?board=92.0" off my bookmark - is there any way to add that info to any old link?

While I am at it, thanks to the extremely talented membership of this forum who have made it the gem of teh internets it is.
