Post by: Von Trinkenessen on 30 January 2018, 12:48:01 PM
I can manage black, brown and red hair but not blonde can you help me please.

As young daughter has started to get into the gaming she has asked me for some blonde haired characters for our campaign.

There are many variances of blonde, from quite sandy to fully white. You want white finish (like drybrushing) on all of them, but build the tone with browns and yellows, layer after layer and possibly using some washes/inks to get into the recesses afterwards. This might create a striped feel to the hair, though. I myself cannot do better than that. Fully white complete blonde still needs some very very gentle subtones in the recesses, grey (for cold feeling) or yellow (for warm feeling).

This would be much better with photos, but I don't have any at hand atm. Probably better painters will chime in and discuss some of their hairwork in detail.

Depends on the blond

Base colour to high light

ash-blond: ashen or grayish blond  -> medium grey hilighted in several layers of increasingly light mixes of base colour and tan, final hilite with pure white

bleached blond, bottle blond, or peroxide blond: terms used to refer to artificially colored blond hair  -> Ivory, white

blond/flaxen: when distinguished from other varieties, "blond" by itself refers to a light but not whitish blond -> khaki, ivory, white

dirty blond or dishwater blond: dark blond with flecks of golden blond and brown  -> green umber, tan, sand

golden blond: a darker to rich, golden-yellow blond honey blond: dark iridescent blond.  -> burnt sienna, raw sienna, yellow tan, ivory

platinum blond: whitish-blond; almost all platinum blonds are children, although it is found on people in Northern Europe.  -> ivory, white

bleached hair, while "towheaded" generally refers to natural hair color  -> bone white, white

sandy blond: grayish-hazel or cream-colored blond  -> khaki, sand, ivory, white

strawberry blond or Venetian blond: reddish blond -> burnt sienna, a little orange and ivory for hilites

yellow: yellow-blond  -> napels yellow, ivory, white

Dirty? Dishwater? You'll be calling us "mousy" next.  lol

Speaking as someone so afflicted, we prefer "dark blond" or "light brown", thank you very much.  ;)

Von Trinkenessen, try a basecoat of khaki (yes, khaki no kidding), then drybushing light yellow (from the top of the head down in vertical strokes) and then drybrushing white (in horizontal strokes) where the light would reach the figure, to get this look:

Yes, I know that you can see her panties through the dress, but focus on the hair, ok?!

;)

What I've used is to start with Army Painter's Bone, then P3's flesh wash, then back to Bone for a heavier drybrush, followed by a very light highlight drybrush on the top of Bone mixed with white.

I use the Foundry Canvas, Foundry Boneyard or Reaper Blonde Triads.

That's awesome!
And the technique sounds so simple.  I shall have to try it!

Awesome blonde.  Who makes her? And the painting isn't half bad either.  ;) ;)
